Whether you’re seeking elegance, breathtaking views, or a unique twist on the traditional, there’s something for everyone on this list. Treat yourself to a truly unforgettable high tea experience and make memories that will last a lifetime!
When I first laid eyes on the exquisite spread of food that was served on the table during high tea, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The pâtissier’s meticulous attention to detail and the chef’s culinary expertise were evident in every beautifully crafted dish. The experience was like being treated like royalty on my birthday – a feeling that is hard to put into words.
High tea, also known as afternoon tea in the olden days, has a long-standing tradition that dates back to the Victorian era. It was Anna, Duchess of Bedford, who popularized this elegant ritual. Today, high tea is primarily offered by luxury hotels, with a few equally enchanting exceptions. It provides a leisurely and sophisticated way to pass the time between lunch and dinner, where you can indulge in a delicate selection of top-quality teas and delectable treats.
If you’re in Cape Town and love indulging in delightful traditions, you’re in luck. This city is a culinary hotspot, offering a variety of high tea experiences that will tickle your taste buds. With so many options to choose from, I’ve selected a few of my favorite spots that stand out for their unique settings, ambience, top-notch service, and mouthwatering spreads.
Let’s explore some high tea options in Cape Town:
1. Mount Nelson
Step into the timeless elegance of this iconic hotel, known for its grandeur and impeccable service. At Mount Nelson, their afternoon tea is legendary and has become an institution in Cape Town. You can also enjoy your tea on the verandah overlooking the enchanting gardens.
As you settle in, tea sommelier Craig Cupido will guide you through their extensive collection of more than 40 fine teas and infusions. You can’t go wrong with their Mount Nelson blend, which features pink rose petals, or the intriguing Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls tea.
Get ready for a feast of sweet delights prepared by their pastry chef, Vicky Gurovich. The silver tiered cake-stands will tempt you with an array of mouthwatering treats, including chocolate and salted caramel roulade and lime and strawberry cheesecake. Before the sweets, you’ll savor finger sandwiches and chef George Jardine’s savory bites. Of course, no high tea is complete without warm scones, served with fresh cream, jam, and cheese. And if that’s not enough, there’s a whole cake table where you can choose your favorite slice. All while being serenaded by the sounds of a pianist playing classic tunes on a baby grand.

The interiors are adorned with beautiful murals, vintage furniture, and dazzling chandeliers.
During tea time, you’ll be treated to a delectable assortment of treats with a modern twist. On the silver stand, you’ll find mouthwatering éclairs sprinkled with raspberry dust, lemon poppy and elderflower lamingtons, cheesecake topped with peanut butter fudge crumble, and heavenly chocolate brownies with toasted marshmallow fluff. A unique aspect of the tea experience at Casa Labia is the tea selection ceremony. A trolley filled with Enmasse blends will be brought to your table, where you’ll have the pleasure of choosing your preferred tea. We opted for the divine Pinotage Rooibos, which had shriveled grapes mixed in with the tea leaves. Next, we tried the delicate and citrusy Sticky Naartjie tea, and finally, we indulged in a pot of the standout Chocolate Chai, infused with rich chai spices and boasting a velvety chocolate flavor.
