I remember those endless and unremarkable days of lockdown in June, where all I wanted was to be somewhere else, in a vast open space, where I could walk as far as I pleased. I dreamed of mountains, valleys, and breathtaking views. The idea of being disconnected from my phone and not having to wear a mask was incredibly appealing. That’s when someone recommended the Baviaanskloof Leopard Trail to me, and without a second thought, I booked a spot with Go Baviaans for their first available date, which happened to be in October. The excitement of starting this walking adventure was overwhelming. I eagerly anticipated setting off, without any specific destination or purpose in mind, just one step after another.

When my group of 8 people arrived at Base Camp on Cedar Falls farm, we were filled with excitement for the upcoming hike. We were staying at Red Cliffs Farmhouse, a spacious building owned by the Booth family. It was the perfect place to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead. Willem Maganie, the manager of the Leopard Trail reception and a lifelong resident of the farm, welcomed us and gave us some essential information.

Willem explained that each of us would receive a large plastic box to store our food, bedding, and clothes for the 4-day hike. These boxes would be transported from camp to camp, lightening our load so we could hike with ease, carrying only our day packs.

DAY 1: Covering 9km – the shortest distance of the trip

As I set off on the first morning, my spirits were high, even though it had just rained heavily after a long drought. We didn’t waste any time and started our journey as soon as the storm turned into a gentle drizzle. Climbing up Kickstart Hill took a lot of effort, and we found ourselves panting when we reached a plateau covered in renosterbos plants, with dolerite koppies on either side. The sun peeked out from behind the clouds for a brief moment, and we settled into a comfortable pace.

We were fortunate to have a cooling wind and a smooth trail, which made our progress easy. Along the way, we decided to take a detour to Gabriel’s Pool, a popular swimming spot during the hot, rainy season. Unfortunately, after the drought, the water was nothing more than a muddy puddle. Despite that, we still enjoyed some coffee and rusks while admiring a wall of rock that hung overhead. As we looked closely, we noticed a remarkable San rock painting made up of what seemed like hundreds of tiny finger dots. This area is filled with caves, many of which were once homes to the San people, up until as recently as 150 years ago.

But onward we pressed, ascending rapidly with a sudden, steep climb to the top of the saddle. From there, a breathtaking vista awaited us, showcasing the beautiful Kouga and Baviaans foothills adorned with flecks of rock. Thankfully, the path we followed was meticulously maintained and well-marked with the familiar yellow leopard paw symbol. Whenever we encountered a fork or crosspaths, we were relieved to find arrows drawn in the sandy ground, allowing us to consult our maps only when determining our next snack spot. Ultimately, we chose the Reflection Pools, where we reveled in the cool shade provided by the rock walls and listened to the enchanting melodies of the birds.

Hey there! I had an incredible adventure near Base Camp, and I wanted to share my experience with you. The site is just 500m away, so we decided to stay at Redhills Farmhouse for the night. Let me tell you, after all the hiking, a hot shower was an absolute delight!

Day 3: The Longest Hike – 22km

I strongly recommend starting early to catch the sunrise on the third day because it’s the longest and toughest one. As we made our way, we were lucky enough to spot a beautiful paradise flycatcher gracefully flitting among the reeds near Base Camp. And as if that wasn’t amazing enough, we also saw a rock kestrel soaring high above us, riding the warm air currents. We had some really vocal baboons nearby too, making quite a commotion from their perch on a nearby peak.

The valley we walked through was dotted with vibrant pink vygies, adding a splash of color to our journey. We faced three saddles along the way, with Honeybush Hill being the first. It was a slow, gradual ascent, and we took a little break to enjoy a coffee.

Next up was Inconvenient Truth, the second saddle. This one was a bit steeper but shorter, and surprisingly, I found it more preferable compared to the slow burn of the third incline, Ain’t so Bad. Trust me, that one lived up to its name! As we trudged our way up, someone jokingly said, “So… so… bad,” perfectly capturing our collective exhaustion. We finally reached the top, and boy, the view from an elevation of almost 1,200m was breathtaking!

As the sun rose, the day quickly grew warmer. By 10 am, I was ready for a break. Luckily, Draaipunt provided a shady spot where I could rest and enjoy a cool lunch. But the real highlight of the day was Kasey Kloof. Even though it had been an unusually dry season, the kloof still had a thick covering of leaves and a couple of pools where I could take a refreshing swim.

The greater Kouga-Baviaanskloof Complex is home to a diverse range of bird species, with a total of 262 species recorded. In this peaceful haven, I was fortunate enough to spot some of these beautiful birds, including the cape sugarbird, cape bulbul, ground woodpecker, lanner falcon, and the ever-present Bokmakierie.

As I explored the area, I came across some interesting signs of wildlife activity. I discovered the remains of numerous crab meals, evidence that a cape clawless otter had been feasting in this paradise. I also stumbled upon some dry leopard scat and even encountered fresh piles of kudu dung. It was clear that I wasn’t the only one enjoying this small slice of heaven.

I couldn’t believe how clean the trails were during my 4-day hike. We didn’t encounter any other hikers for most of our trek, and there was no sign of human waste anywhere.

How fit do I need to be? The Leopard Trail is challenging but doable for hikers with a good level of fitness.

Tip: Plan an extra day! Make sure you set aside an extra day for the Cedar Falls hike. It’s a 4-6 hour round trip from Cedar Falls Base Camp that you don’t want to miss. Remember to book in advance, as only 12 people per day are allowed on the trail.
