As I walk through this vast space, I can’t help but be captivated by the delicate beauty of the hellebores. They seem to be hiding among the vibrant foliage, creating a sense of mystery and wonder. The path leads me down towards the dam, but I have to be cautious as I cross the stream and waterfalls. The rocks are slippery, especially in the early morning.

If you want to explore this enchanting place, you can take a self-guided walk any day between 10am and 4pm. Just remember that Sundays are excluded. However, if you prefer a more guided experience, there are special guided walks available on 9 October. You can join owner Anne-Marie Ferreira and head gardener Wendy Atwell as they share their knowledge and passion for this amazing garden. And if you’re interested in the art of moss gardening, there’s a special introduction by Gert van Tonder at 12.30pm on the same day.

In the process of being created, the moss garden captivates me. Seeing the rocks and moss, all gathered locally, come together is truly magnificent. It has taken two years to construct this garden, centered around two immense boulders that likely arrived here thousands of years ago due to glaciers.

As I explore the garden, I discover hidden sculptures that possess a sculptural quality. I advise you to keep a close eye out for them. A remarkable sculpture of Dionysus, crafted by artist Angus Taylor using rocks from Barberton in Mpumalanga, watches over the lawn by the lake.

Make sure to take some time at the lily pond. In the past, it served as a rest stop for farmers en route to selling their goods to ships in Table Bay. This pond is located along one of the original paths to Stellenbosch.

When you visit the farm gate, you’ll need to pay R20 per person to enter. If you want to take part in a guided tour, it’s essential to book in advance and the cost is R30 per person.

Immerse yourself in the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust’s latest public art exhibition, called Poetic. This exhibition showcases the work of both established and emerging land artists, including Strijdom van der Merwe, Hannelie Coetzee, Gordon Froud, the sibling duo Anni Snyman & PC Janse van Rensburg, Andrew Hofmeyr, as well as newcomers Cow Mash, Paballo Majela, and Sandile Rabede.
