I gotta tell you about this amazing place I discovered recently called Steenbok Farm Cottages. It’s located in the Western Cape, right between Tulbagh and Wolsely, on the Witzenberg Game Farm.
Let me set the scene for you – imagine these majestic mountains, the Witzenberg Range, surrounding the game farm. They’re like these fancy curtains, and the way they catch the light, changing color, it’s just breathtaking.
So I went there for a summer break, and let me tell you, I was blown away. Our little cottage, ‘Aalwyn’, was an absolute dream. It was so bright and airy, and everywhere I looked, I was just surrounded by nature. It really helped me relax and soak up the peaceful vibes. I felt at ease the moment I stepped inside.
Imagine yourself sinking into the soft cushions of a large leather couch, completely immersed in a captivating book or flipping through the pages of a fascinating magazine like Getaway. It’s a cozy scene that invites you to relax and escape from the world around you. With a glass of red wine in hand, you find the perfect spot on the front stoop, right next to the braai area. From here, you have an enchanting view of the majestic mountains, their peaks reaching up to the sky.
But that’s not all. Step to the other side of the cottage, and you’ll discover a splendid wooden deck that stretches along the entire length of the house. It’s a haven where you can unwind and revel in nature’s beauty. On one particular evening, we settled here on the deck, watching as gentle springbok grazed in the clearing below, their tails flicking with grace and elegance.
Imagine sitting on the deck of the cottage, watching springbuck peacefully graze. It’s a beautiful sight that transports me to a place of tranquility and wonder.
The cottages here are designed with comfort in mind. Each cottage has two bathrooms and three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are air-conditioned and feature double beds, while the third bedroom has two single beds and a fan to keep you cool during the summer heat. The stone exteriors give the cottages a charming, rustic look, while the spacious interiors boast sleek screed floors and modern finishes.
Both my husband and our children were thrilled to discover that the cottages offer WiFi and DSTV, ensuring we can stay connected and entertained. And if we’re in the mood for a swim, there are two communal swimming pools just a short 5- to 10-minute walk away.
As I stood on the front stoep, admiring the view of the majestic Witzenberg Mountains, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of the landscape.
During my morning run along the dusty road, I had an unexpected encounter with some of the wildlife that calls this place home. To my surprise, I came face to face with a zebra and a red hartebeest. The hartebeest seemed startled by my presence and quickly darted into the nearby bushes, while the zebra appeared unfazed and continued grazing.
On my second lap, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for the red hartebeest. My approach disrupted his breakfast once again, and his skittish nature led him to seek cover once more. Meanwhile, the zebra seemed to have decided that moving away was too much of a hassle and resumed grazing without a care in the world.
When I first thought about visiting Tulbagh in December, I was worried that it might be too hot. But to my surprise, Cape Town had been having unusually cold weather, so when we arrived in Tulbagh, the temperature was a comfortable 28 degrees Celsius – just right for a summer getaway. And the best part is that Steenbok Cottages, with its air-conditioning and cozy fireplaces, is perfect for a winter retreat too.
The bedrooms in this place are really comfortable and they offer such amazing views. The decor is modern, which adds a nice touch. You’ll definitely feel right at home here. Image credit: Elise Kirsten
After we spent some time relaxing by the pool, enjoying some wine at the cottage, reading, having a BBQ, and playing board games, we thought it would be a good idea to check out the surrounding area. Even though it was hard to leave this cozy spot, we couldn’t resist the temptation. Luckily, it only took us 10 minutes to drive to Tulbagh, a charming town.
Once we arrived, we took a leisurely stroll down Church Street, which is known for its beautiful Cape Dutch heritage buildings. There’s so much history to explore here. One particular building caught our attention. It’s called Honey Oak, and it was built back in 1852. The name comes from the honey bees that used to make their nests in one of the oak trees near the house. Such an interesting story!
As I stood on the porch of ‘Alwyn’ cottage at Steenbok Farm Cottages, I couldn’t help but take in the stunning view. The beauty of Tulbagh enveloped me, and I felt a sense of wonder. South Africa is home to many historic towns, and Tulbagh holds a special place among them. It is the fourth oldest town in the country, surpassed only by Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and Swellendam. With its charming Cape-Dutch architecture and rich history, it has an allure all its own.
Walking through Tulbagh’s streets, I came across Paddagang Eethuis & Fijne Wijne, one of the original KWV wine houses. This place held personal significance for me as it reminded me of enjoying lunches there with my grandmother on her birthday back in the 1980s. The memories flooded back, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to this place. The street itself was adorned with guest accommodations and restaurants nestled under the shade of majestic oak trees. It was a picture-perfect scene straight out of a storybook.
If you ever find yourself in Tulbagh, make sure to stop by the tourist information center. It’s located at one end of the town, and the friendly staff there will be more than happy to guide you and provide you with all the information you need to make the most of your visit. Tulbagh’s charm, history, and natural beauty make it a truly captivating destination.
Whenever I visit town, I always make it a point to stop by Saronsberg. Their Shiraz is my absolute favorite, and winemaker Dewaldt Heyns has been doing incredible work here since 2003. The farm itself is truly remarkable, with both indoor and outdoor spaces that leave a lasting impression.
Upstairs, you’ll find a contemporary South African art gallery that showcases some amazing pieces. On the lower level, there are large windows that open up to a patio covered in lush vines. Beyond that, there’s a shaded lawn and a beautiful dam with an iconic statue.
After spending a delightful afternoon at Saronsberg, we headed back to the tranquil Steenbok Cottages to savor a bit more peace and quiet before returning to the hustle and bustle of the city the next day.
When you step out of the cottage, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the majestic Witzenberg Mountain Range. It’s a sight that never fails to amaze me.
