Things to experience in Wellington

1. Explore Jorgensen’s Distillery with a guided tour

Welcome to Jorgensen’s Distillery – a truly unique and exceptional place. Here, I craft gin, vodka, brandy, and absinthe using timeless techniques and the finest herbs from my garden. I’d love to share the secrets behind the 13 carefully selected ingredients that make up the exquisite Jorgensen’s Gin. As we explore, I’ll regale you with fascinating stories, like the tale of the vodka bottles sent all the way from Russia. And I’ll also explain why certain plants must be kept away from our beloved family dog.

After our enlightening distillery tour and botany lesson, let’s unwind on the spacious stoep of my stunning 1812 home. I’ll treat you to a taste of pre-Russian Revolution vodka, and you can savor an authentic sip of absinthe from a vintage 1895 absinthe glass. And remember, ‘a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.’

While tours are free, I kindly request that you schedule an appointment in advance. If you provide ample notice, I might even surprise you with some delectable food pairings, including my unique absinthe ice cream.

Ready to be amazed by the world of alpacas? Look no further than Quenti Alpaca Farm! Here, you’ll discover the incredible journey behind those luxurious alpaca garments that might seem a little pricey. Prepare to be captivated as I take you on a tour of this extraordinary farm.

At Quenti Alpaca Farm, a visit is an eye-opening experience. You’ll witness the immense effort and skill required to create that cozy scarf or those snug socks you adore. Get ready to be in awe of the machinery that operates with lightning speed, a true marvel of human ingenuity. But beware, for one wrong move could cost you a finger!

3. Immerse Yourself in Art at the Breytenbach Centre

It’s pretty cool that you can find displays of artworks by South African (and international) artists in what used to be the home of South African poet, Breyten Breytenbach. When you walk through this place, you’ll notice that each room has something different to offer. There’s a spacious gallery, a room filled with beautiful ceramics, a cozy second-hand bookstore, and even a coffee shop. Don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll through the small, green garden. You’ll find mosaics, a fountain, poems, and angels sprinkled throughout. If you venture to the back, you’ll discover a charming dinner-theatre that often hosts shows by local musicians, cabaret artists, and actors. And guess what? The Wellington Tourism Office is also located here. So if you need any information, they’ve got you covered.

4. Mountain biking trails at Welvanpas Family Vineyards

I’m not much of a mountain biker, so I haven’t had the chance to try these trails myself. But I’ve been told that these mountain biking trails are some of the best in the world. The trails start at Welvanpas Family Vineyards, where you can get your permit (and enjoy a cup of coffee) at the ‘Die Ou Meul’ coffee shop. There are four different routes to choose from, ranging from 15km to 29km. And if you’re up for it, you can even go wine-tasting afterward, including on Sundays. While you’re there, be sure to check out the gardens on the other side of the road. I’m not exactly sure if we were supposed to be in there, but they’re really magical and definitely worth a peek if you’re a fan of secret gardens!

5. Wine-tasting that feels personal at Bosman Family Vineyards

Hey there! Are you ready for an amazing experience at Lelienfontein? Well, here’s what you need to know:

Every Saturday, from 10:00 to 15:00, you have the chance to visit Lelienfontein and enjoy some fantastic tastings. But if you want that extra special treatment, let me tell you, it’s worth it! Just call or email ahead and make a booking for any day of the week (except Sundays) to guarantee a personal touch.

Now, let me share with you what’s included in this incredible experience. As you arrive, get ready to be welcomed with a warm, refreshing towel and some delicious cucumber sandwiches. Talk about starting things off right!

First, you’ll have the opportunity to take a tour of Lelienfontein’s historic cellar. Imagine stepping back in time as you see the original tools and barrels that were used eight generations ago. And guess what? Everything you see here is authentic, straight from the farm. No antiques from a store, only genuine artifacts with a story to tell.

One of the highlights of the tour is learning about the Bosman family’s vine grafting tradition. They’ve been at it since way back in 1888! In fact, their vine nursery is the largest in all of Africa. That’s quite an impressive feat, don’t you think?

And it doesn’t stop there. You’ll also discover the incredible social upliftment program that the Bosman family has set in motion. It’s truly inspiring to hear how they’re making a positive impact in their community.

Now, let’s talk about the best part – the wine tasting itself! For only R50 per person, you’ll have the opportunity to sample five different wines. That’s right, five! It’s a great way to explore the flavors and aromas that Lelienfontein has to offer.

If all of this sounds like your kind of adventure, then why wait? Reach out to Lelienfontein and secure your spot. Feel free to give them a call at 021 873 3170 or visit their website at www.bosmanwines.com. They can’t wait to welcome you!

6. Shop for leather goods at Redemption Leather

Hey there! If you’re on the hunt for some affordable handmade leather goods, then look no further than Redemption Leather. This place is a treasure trove of shoes, hats, bags, wallets, belts, whips, and even fly swatters. And let me tell you, the moment you step inside, that distinctive smell of leather is going to captivate your senses. It’s definitely worth experiencing! The brains behind Redemption is none other than Arnold Slabber, who learned everything about leather-making from his wise old grandfather. Now, he’s passing down the family trade to his own son, keeping the tradition alive.

Where to eat in Wellington

1. Start your day with a bang at Festa

When you order the french toast (R60) at this unique restaurant on Kleinevalleij Estate, you won’t have to worry about eating for the rest of the day! The portions here are gigantic and my plate was overflowing with brioche covered in whipped cream, topped with bacon curls and banana slices. Honestly, I couldn’t even finish it. The restaurant itself has a spacious and eclectic vibe, with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and pianos suspended in the air. There’s a cozy fireplace for chilly days, and kids will have a blast on the jungle gym and wide green lawns. And let’s not forget the breathtaking view! They even have special deals on Thursday and Friday evenings, like a pizza with a glass of wine for only R80. This place is also a dream wedding venue!
Contact: You can reach them at Tel 021 864 2778, or visit their website at www.kleinevalleij.co.za/festa

2. Have a blast at Twist Some More

Twist Some More is another cool restaurant located in a barn that welcomes families (they have a jungle gym and a sandpit for the kids). And here’s something interesting: if the resident Eagle Owl happens to leave a little gift on you or your dinner, your dessert is on the house! I didn’t witness any owl poop during my visit (though I definitely heard it), but I absolutely loved their crispy pork belly served with stir-fried vegetables, Chinese noodles, and a delicious chili-ginger sauce (R125). For dessert, I indulged in their heavenly hazelnut crème brûlée (R45). The owner and chef, Johan van Schalkwyk, says it’s one of his signature dishes, and I completely understand why. All of Johan’s dishes are made using locally sourced ingredients. His other must-try creation is the Wild Boar Burger (R85), which you can also have as a Banting version with a cauliflower & cheese bun. The outdoor seating area is perfect for warm summer nights, while the cozy fireplace and couches are ideal for chilly winter evenings. Twist Some More is a relaxed and friendly place to enjoy a satisfying meal, play board games, and have a drink at the bar — by the way, their wine list offers a choice of 55 local wines!

Afternoon Tea at Langkloof Roses Tea Room

Venture a little further from town, down a well-kept dirt road, and you’ll discover Langkloof Roses. Here, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of blooming roses as you sip tea and indulge in a slice of cake or a light meal in their charming tea room. Sink into one of their cozy couches and let the world slip away as you feast your eyes on horses grazing in the fields below. Alternatively, you can choose to sit on the balcony, overlooking their expansive rose plantation.

Feel free to peruse the magazines provided or let the kids loose in the play area, complete with a jungle gym and a toybox brimming with fun things. When it comes to refreshments, the menu offers an array of delectable options. Treat yourself to freshly baked scones (R35), mouthwatering muffins (R35), or satisfying sandwiches (starting from R25). For something heartier, there’s the enticing free-range chicken salad (R60) or the tantalizing Namibian lamb pie (R70). Oh, and here’s a little secret – ask for their rose and geranium cordial (R10). It’s not listed on the menu, but a kind-hearted Wellington local suggested it to me, and I wasn’t disappointed.

If you’re planning a visit on a Saturday, it’s a good idea to give them a call first. You see, Langkloof Roses is a highly sought-after venue for weddings and private functions, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on the experience.

4. The Perfect Place: A Delightful Combination of Light Meals and Antiques

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised when you step inside The Perfect Place on Church Street. Don’t be fooled by its unassuming exterior – this house is massive! It is filled with countless rooms, each one offering something unique. Some rooms are adorned with precious antiques, others are dedicated to serving delicious homemade treats, and then there are those that are part of the charming restaurant.
As soon as you walk in, you will find a cozy corner where you and your loved one can enjoy some quality time together. Want to have breakfast surrounded by nature? No problem! You can enjoy a delightful meal under the shade of towering trees. Or maybe you’d prefer to soak in the atmosphere from the stoep while sipping on a cup of coffee. Either way, you’re in for a treat!
Inside, you’ll hear the cheerful chatter of finches coming from an antique birdcage. Meanwhile, people engage in lively conversations over steaming cups of coffee. The breakfast menu offers a variety of options starting from just R24. If you’re feeling peckish during the day, you can choose from an array of light meals and gourmet sandwiches starting at R42.
Personally, I highly recommend the French toast with bacon and maple syrup for R48. It’s a delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors that will have your taste buds dancing! Another great option is the scrambled egg on toast with cheddar cheese, avocado, and bean sprouts, priced at a pocket-friendly R34.

5. The Gecko Lounge: Where Locals Indulge in Delicious Sushi

I want to tell you about this cool spot I discovered when I visited a small town. It’s called Gecko Lounge, and let me tell you, it’s the place to be on a Sunday evening! When I got there around 6:00, the place was already packed. I found out that Sunday is sushi special day, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and they have half-price sushi. No wonder everyone was there enjoying some tasty sushi! And let me tell you, the sushi at Gecko Lounge is really good, even though it doesn’t look like a fancy sushi place. It’s actually more like a burger and beer joint, and they have different specials on different days, in case you’re in the mood for something else. They even have a menu for the kids and a cool jungle gym for them to play while the adults relax and have a drink at the well-stocked bar inside.

If you’re in the mood for a few drinks and a satisfying meal that won’t break the bank, then make sure to visit this local pub on Church Street. With both indoor and outdoor seating options, you’ll feel right at home. The friendly and helpful waitstaff will ensure that you have a great experience. On the menu, you’ll find classic pub grub options like toasted sandwiches starting at just R20, burgers starting at R32, fish & chips for R55, and schnitzel with chips for R49. If you’re looking for something lighter, they also offer delicious salads starting at R36. Plus, they have big screens for sports enthusiasts who want to catch a game of cricket or rugby.

1. Bed and breakfast at Oude-Wellington Estate

When I arrived at this historic wine farm at the foot of the Bainskloof Pass, I was immediately struck by the scent of thatch that filled the air. It seemed to seep into every corner, immersing me in the rich history of the place. I couldn’t help but wonder about all the people who had walked on the creaking wooden floors before me. As it turns out, the room I stayed in used to be a hen house back in 1795. I can only imagine the sounds of chickens scratching about.

Over the years, all the buildings on this farm have been lovingly restored by Rolf Schumacher, who is one of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. He loves to chat, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself engaged in a conversation or two during your stay.

There are two types of accommodation available at this lovely farm. You can opt for the bed and breakfast option, which costs R550 per person per night. Alternatively, you can choose the self-catering option in either the Hen House or Vineyard Cottage, which costs R480 per person per night. The Vineyard Cottage even has its own small braai area, perfect for a cozy evening meal. All rooms come with linen and towels, including ones for the swimming pool. It’s important to note that while Oude Wellington is a family-friendly place, the pool is not fenced, so extra caution is needed with little ones around.

If you’re up for some exploration, there are walks to the dam and a delightful picnic spot nestled in the woods. For breakfast, head to the Manor House, a stunning building dating back to 1835. They serve breakfast on the stoep during summer and by the enormous fireplace in winter. If you’re in the mood for lunch or dinner, the on-site restaurant offers delicious meals every day. I’ve heard great things about their fillet steak – apparently, it’s out of this world! And let’s not forget about the brandy and wine tastings, a must for any wine lover.

If you’re someone who appreciates staying in places with a rich history, enjoys the company of furry friends like dogs and cats (Rosie the sheepdog is always ready for a walk), and likes to unwind with a glass of wine and a friendly chat, then Oude Wellington is the perfect spot for you. Trust me, the website simply doesn’t do it justice!

2. Pet-friendly Bastiaanskloof: An Unforgettable Escape with Your Furry Friend

I just had to share my amazing experience at Bastiaanskloof in Wellington. A group of us stayed there and we had the most wonderful time. We booked two of their cottages, Wild Olive and Restio, which were conveniently located next to each other.

Our visit was more than just a wine-tasting trip; it was a much-needed escape from our daily routines. And Bastiaanskloof was the perfect place for that. We spent hours chatting on the stoep, cooking delicious meals together, and taking relaxing afternoon naps. But that’s not all!

One of the best parts was exploring the beautiful surroundings. We went on leisurely walks, splashed around in the refreshing waterfall, and even let our well-behaved dogs join in on the fun. Yes, you heard that right – Bastiaanskloof is pet-friendly! They allowed us to bring our furry companions along, and they had an absolute blast sniffing out new scents and discovering new places.

Worried about the safety of your pets? Don’t be! Bastiaanskloof is a secure place, so you can relax knowing that your furry friends won’t wander off onto the road.

The drive to Bastiaanskloof may be a little longer, but trust me, it’s worth it. The journey along Bainskloof Pass is simply breathtaking, and once you arrive, you’ll feel like you’re in a whole different world.

The cottages at Bastiaanskloof are available starting from R1 095 per night, and they comfortably sleep four people.

To book your unforgettable escape and find out more, you can contact Bastiaanskloof at Tel 076 198 0234 or visit their website at www.bastiaanskloof.co.za.

A Blissful Sunday of Wine-Tasting in Wellington

Oh, the joy of exploring the world of wines on a lazy Sunday in Wellington! It’s a treasure trove of vineyards and wineries, but do keep in mind that most places are closed on this day. Fear not, for I have uncovered three delightful destinations where you can indulge in the art of wine-tasting.

1. Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate: The Sweet Symphony of Chocolate Pinotage

Let me tell you about Diemersfontein, a place that is quite famous for their Chocolate & Coffee Pinotage. They even have barrels of it at their annual Pinotage on Tap Festival, which is a must-visit. This wine and country estate might be more commercial, but it boasts beautiful gardens and offers a wine-tasting experience with a view. You can take a leisurely stroll on the lush green lawns, passing by charming lily ponds and maybe even give a friendly hello to the life-sized stone hippo. If you’re feeling hungry, you can enjoy some country cuisine at their Seasons Restaurant or indulge in a generous cheese platter in the tasting room. The wine-tasting hours are from 10:00 to 17:00 and it only costs R20 per person to try six different wines. Don’t forget to taste their famous Pinotage – I assure you, you’ll probably end up leaving with a couple of bottles!

Hey there! Looking for a great spot to spend your Sunday with the family, where you can enjoy wine-tasting and a delicious lunch? Look no further than this popular venue! I recently had the pleasure of visiting this place, and let me tell you, it was amazing. I opted for the Vineyard Platter, which came with an assortment of cheeses, cold meats, olives, pickles, and homemade bread – so delicious! And the best part? You can do wine-tasting right at your table while enjoying your meal. The combinations were out of this world!

But that’s not all they have to offer. The menu is filled with mouthwatering options like burgers, quiches, beef fillet ciabatas, and smoked salmon salads. They even have a kiddies menu and an awesome jungle jim and sandpit for the little ones to have a blast. After your meal, you can relax on blankets and cozy up with some continental pillows on their beautiful lawn. And if you’re an early riser, they even serve breakfast!

To top it all off, they have a wine-tasting experience that I absolutely loved. For just R20 per person, you can try four of their handcrafted wines. It’s a great way to explore their exquisite wine selection. So, why wait? Head on over to this fantastic spot and indulge in a day of delicious food and delightful wines.

3. Labyrinths and legends at Doolhof Wine Estate

Looking for a place surrounded by beauty and mystery? Look no further than Doolhof Wine Estate. As you drive in, you’ll be greeted by horse paddocks and a friendly Jack Russel. The name “Doolhof” means “labyrinth” in Afrikaans, and it’s clear why once you see the interwoven hills and vales. They even have a real labyrinth on the estate, inspired by the famous one at Chartres Cathedral. Walking through it is a great way to unwind after a wine-tasting session.

Speaking of wine-tasting, Doolhof Wine Estate has some amazing options. They offer wine specials, and you can even grab a bottle from their bargain bin for just R20. If you’re feeling peckish, you can indulge in their cheese platters or picnic baskets for two. Just make sure to book in advance if you have a party of four or more. And the best part? Their wines have mythical names like The Minotaur, Theseus, Lady in Red, and the Dark Lady Pinotage. You’ll feel like you’re sipping on a legend!
