I’m in Stanford, a town situated between Hermanus and Gansbaai on the R43 road. It’s a beautiful place, surrounded by the majestic Klein Rivier Mountains and located along the Klein Rivier. This river is incredibly unique, being one of the shortest in the world from source to sea. The river flows into the Hermanus Estuary, also known as ‘the lagoon,’ which doesn’t breach naturally very often. But when it does, it’s a sight to behold. In Stanford, we’re lucky to have this waterway, as it offers a wide range of water sports for everyone to enjoy. Just nearby, we have the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, managed by Cape Nature. And don’t forget about the charming little village called De Kelders, which is a favorite spot for whale watching.

Exploring the town

The roadworks on the R46 have finally made their way into town, which means the normally busy area around Ou Meul Bakery is now a bit more difficult to navigate. On top of that, the municipality is currently paving some of the main roads in the village. While this is mostly a positive development, as it will provide more parking and an alternative route for the poultry trucks, it does present some challenges.

But don’t worry, you can still enjoy Stanford by parking your car and exploring on foot. The town is small enough to easily walk around, and Queen Victoria Road is where most of the action happens. This street is filled with a variety of shops, including antique, art, and gift stores, as well as plenty of restaurants. Halfway down Queen Victoria Road, you’ll find a new establishment called Made in Stanford. When I take the road along the N2 and go through Caledon, there’s something special about the journey. The little roadside stalls alone are enough to make the trip worthwhile. Have you heard of The Orchard near Elgin? They’re currently offering a delicious bobotie tray that you can grab and take away. Then there’s Peregrine Farmstall with its amazing Burning Books, a bookstore housed in a unique 1955 Bedford Green Goddess Fire Truck. If you’re in the mood for some wine, head over to Houwhoek Farmstall where you can buy their wine at great prices right from the cellar. And let’s not forget about Dassiesfontein!
