In 1909, a man named Charles Cottar arrived in Kenya and quickly discovered his love for hunting big game. He was known for his bravery and fearlessness, never backing down from a challenge. Throughout his life, he faced incredible dangers, including being gored by a buffalo, knocked down by an elephant, and mauled by a leopard. Unfortunately, the leopard attack left him permanently injured. Tragically, at the age of 66, he met his end when a rhino fatally gored him. In a book detailing his life, called “Cottar: The exception was the rule,” there is a quote that describes him as having a scar that twisted one eye out of alignment, yet still being a rugged and purposeful figure with an unmatched energy and unwavering courage.

Interestingly, Charles Cottar’s great-granddaughter, Jeanette, has inherited his extraordinary energy and attention to detail. Jeanette currently owns a property located at 185 Beach Road in Gordon’s Bay. Just like her great-grandfather, she possesses a unique eye for every little nuance and an unyielding determination to do things exceptionally well.

If you’re looking for something closer to the sea, the Beachside Studio is just 5 meters away, giving you direct access to the beauty of the ocean. It even has its own private courtyard where you can have a braai (barbecue) and soak in the sights and sounds of the crashing waves against the rocks right in front of you.

But let me tell you about the real gem, the Beachside Penthouse. As soon as you step inside, you’ll be transported to a safari-themed paradise, paying homage to Jeanette’s great grandfather and other family members. It’s like stepping back in time to a world where brave men took on wild game and elegant ladies played lawn croquet. The decor features a Nguni cow skin on the floor, stunning photographs of models posing with elephants, and a gallery of cherished family memories. You’ll want to join the era by enjoying a classic gin and tonic.

The Beachside Penthouse is a two-bedroom haven, each with its own private bathroom. One of the bedrooms is adorned with beautiful artifacts from Kenya, including a traditional Masai headrest and vintage suitcases. The room is accented with cushions decorated with perleomon buttons and boasts enchanting curtains that sway gently in the breeze. And here’s a treat: the bathroom has a skylight above the enormous bathtub, allowing you to gaze up at the stars as you soak in pure relaxation. When you’re ready to retreat, a plush king-size bed awaits your slumber.

The other bedroom in the Beachside Penthouse has a charming coastal-inspired feel, with a color palette of whites and blues. From this room, you can admire the breathtaking view of the ocean and the historic harbor. The ensuite bathroom offers a refreshing shower with a stunning ocean view. When you step outside onto the balcony, you’ll understand why surfers flock to this corner of paradise. Soak up the sun, sip on cocktails (or should I say, G&Ts), and watch as the surfers ride the waves. Oh, and here’s a cheeky tip: according to Jeanette, this is a secret spot where people rarely look up, making it a great place for a discreet tan. Just don’t forget that you’ll be, well, naked after your fifth gin!

What I loved
This place is incredible! Every little detail has been thought of, and the accommodation is so stunning that I wish I had more time to spend here. The host, Jeanette, is amazing. Her love for Gordon’s Bay and life is contagious. As soon as I arrived, she had me out exploring the beautiful Steenbras Dam and walking along the promenade. And she even convinced me to soak up the sun and get a full body tan!

What you need to know
If you don’t like hunting and find images of hunters with their trophies unsettling, then you might not want to stay in the penthouse. While Charles Cottar, the owner, believed in nature conservation, some of the photographs in the penthouse are quite graphic.

Where to eat
If you ever get tired of enjoying a barbecue with a magnificent view or don’t feel like making breakfast, don’t worry! There are plenty of restaurants just a short drive away. The Tavern is a great place to go for delicious seafood (their calamari is the best I’ve ever had!) and enjoy a pint at the popular pub. You can also try the Bay Café or Zest on Beach Road for tasty breakfast options. And if you’re in the mood for pizzas or burgers, there are restaurants that serve those too. If you’re up for a little adventure, you can head a bit further to Berties, a popular pub by the waterfront that often has live music on weekends.
