Day One:
A Scenic Hike from Monk’s Cowl Camp
No trip to the berg is complete without a memorable hike. Venture out to the Monks Cowl camp, where you can obtain a permit to explore one of the stunning trails. A favorite among visitors is The Sphinx Hike, a picturesque route that guides you past Crystal Falls, leading up to a rock formation resembling a sphinx.
When you embark on a 4.8-kilometer out-and-back hike, be prepared for a challenging but rewarding experience. The trail is not too easy, but the views along the way will make you forget about the difficult climb.
The Valley Bakery
After you’ve finished the hike and taken a refreshing shower, make your way to the newly renovated Valley Bakery for a well-deserved lunch. The bakery has different seating options available to suit your preferences and the weather. Don’t miss out on trying one of their mouthwatering bread options – it’s a must!
While you’re there, don’t forget to explore their shop filled with various honey jars, biscuits, jams, and preserves. And before you leave, make sure to grab a fresh loaf of their artisanal bread.
The Drakensberg Canopy Tour
By the time you arrive at the Drakensberg Canopy Tour, I hope your stomach has settled from your meal. This place is located in the beautiful Blue Grotto Forest, which gives you a unique view of your surroundings. I especially love that it has the first elevated rock-face walkway in all of Africa! This tour is really special because it combines cliffside and treetop platforms, taking you up to 60 meters above the forest floor.
This is a guided tour that usually takes between two to four hours to complete. Make sure to book your spot in advance, as it’s quite popular.
Have a Taste at the Drakensberg Brewery
Before you end your day and get some rest, I recommend making a stop at the Drakensberg Brewery. Here, you can try some of the best beverages that Cathkin Park has to offer. They even have cheese boards available if you’re feeling a little hungry after your adventure in the trees.
The brewery offers a fantastic view of the mountains, which is a treat for both your eyes and your taste buds.
Day Two
Welcome to the Drakensberg Sun Lakeview Restaurant!
Start your day off right with a delicious buffet breakfast at our Lakeview Restaurant. Our talented chefs are ready to prepare a part of your meal just the way you like it. You can even watch them in action at our live cooking stations!
Experience Falcon Ridge – Bird of Prey Centre
Located in the beautiful Champagne Valley, Falcon Ridge is a sanctuary for injured birds of prey. Come learn all about these majestic creatures and their incredible abilities.
If the weather is good, you can witness their daily flight display at 10:30. Prepare to be amazed as these raptors showcase their acrobatic skills, diving through the air to catch the meat thrown by their caregivers. Trust me, an hour will fly by watching this incredible show!
Discover Scootours Drakensberg
When it comes to Drakensberg Scootours, they have a simple motto: ‘If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a scooter.’ It’s that easy!
This thrilling adventure is perfect for those of you who love adrenaline or just want to try something different.
First, we’ll drive you to the top of the mountain. Take a moment to marvel at the breathtaking views around you. Then, our guide will give you all the safety instructions you need before you start your exhilarating ride downhill.
Champagne Bistro – A Must-Try Spot
All that excitement probably left you hungry. So, after your incredible ride, make sure to visit Champagne Bistro at the Berg Air Lifestyle Centre.
When it comes to finding a place for lunch, this bistro has got you covered. Whether you fancy a halloumi and quinoa salad or a ploughman’s platter, this spot is perfect. The friendly staff, combined with the breathtaking views, will make your Drakensberg experience truly unforgettable.
A Sweet Farewell
Wrap up your time in Cathkin Park with a visit to Chocolate Memories. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
As soon as you step foot in this shop/cafe, you’ll be greeted with a dazzling array of chocolate treats. It’ll be hard to decide which ones you want to take home with you!
Don’t miss out on their chocolate tasting experience, where you can sample all their delectable chocolate bars. They’ll even walk you through the different flavors and types of chocolate they have.
Once you’ve managed to pry yourself away from the temptation of buying all the chocolates, make sure to treat yourself to a cappuccino at their coffee bar. Take in one last breath of the fresh mountain air and bid the majestic peaks farewell.
