Exploring the Wonders of Route 62

Route 62 is a magical stretch of road that winds its way through breathtaking landscapes, taking you on an unforgettable journey. I recently had the incredible opportunity to venture along this scenic route, and it left me in awe of the wonders that awaited at every turn.

When you embark on a journey along Route 62, you’ll find yourself surrounded by picturesque landscapes that seem to come straight out of a storybook. The rolling hills, vast vineyards, and majestic mountains all combine to create a scene that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. As I drove along, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and excitement at the beauty that lay before me.

One of the highlights of Route 62 is the charming towns and villages that dot the landscape. These quaint little communities are full of character and history, offering a glimpse into a simpler way of life. Each town has its own unique charm, from the colorful streets of Robertson to the historic buildings of Barrydale. Exploring these towns is like stepping back in time and experiencing a piece of South African heritage.

The attractions along Route 62 are as diverse as the scenery itself. If you’re a wine lover, you’ll be in heaven as you pass by numerous vineyards and wineries. The region is known for producing exceptional wines, and many of the vineyards offer tastings and tours. As I sipped on a glass of locally produced wine, I couldn’t help but appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship that went into creating such a delightful drink.

For nature enthusiasts, Route 62 is a playground of wonders waiting to be discovered. From stunning rock formations to hidden waterfalls, there are countless opportunities to connect with the natural world. I found myself hiking through lush forests, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling a sense of tranquility that is hard to find in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Route 62 is not just a road; it’s a journey of self-discovery and exploration. It’s a chance to disconnect from the chaos of the world and reconnect with nature and yourself. So, if you’re looking for an adventure unlike any other, I encourage you to set off on your own journey along Route 62. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

You’ll love the irresistible combination of mouthwatering curries, a wide selection of gin, and even a special menu for your furry friend at Gypsy’s Gin Bar, Bistro, Deli in the charming town of Ladismith.

Me, I’m drawn to Route 62 time and time again. Why? Because I’d rather take the scenic back roads than rush on the highways. There’s something magical about the slow pace of country life, and I have a deep appreciation for a good port. And let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the joy of popping into a quaint shop, only to find yourself hours later, happily devouring a mouthwatering roosterkoek, with a milkshake mustache to prove it. And when I leave, my arms are always laden with jars of homemade jams and tangy chutneys, a delicious reminder of my visit that last for months in my fridge.

Gather ’round, folks, and let me regale you with the story of my week-long adventure. This time, I decided to bring Valentino along and together we embarked on a journey from Montagu to Oudtshoorn. Our days were spent lounging on the stoep of old farmhouses, steeped in history. We strolled through lush pastures, taking in the serene beauty of the countryside. And when the evening came, we cozied up next to crackling fireplaces, feeling the warmth seep into our bones.

As the days went by, I realized how little I cared about my cell phone or laptop. They seemed like insignificant trinkets in comparison to the simple pleasures of stoop-sitting and farm-life. It was a refreshing break from the digital world we are so immersed in.

Now, let me tell you a little secret about Valentino. He’s not much bigger than a rabbit! So, with our trusty little car, we made our way back to Cape Town. Our vehicle was laden with treasures from our journey – frozen ostrich steaks, bottles of port, and delicious Wagyu boerewors. Oh, and let’s not forget the jars upon jars of homemade jam. It was quite the scene!

Looking back, it’s amazing how a simple getaway can remind you of what truly matters. Sometimes, all we need is a break from the chaos and a chance to reconnect with nature and ourselves. It’s these moments, shared with loved ones like Valentino, that truly rejuvenate the spirit and bring a sense of calm to our hectic lives.

In Barrydale, there is a beautiful farmhouse called Kleindoorn Guesthouse. Its large stoep provides the perfect place to soak up the sun. When we arrived after a long day, my friend Valentino and I made ourselves comfortable on the stoep, taking in the breathtaking sunset. The guesthouse, built in 1900, has a lot of history. In fact, the owner, Bertus le Roux, grew up in this very house. We had the privilege of staying in his childhood bedroom. One morning, Bertus came over for tea, and we chatted on the stoep while Lucy, his lively Hungarian pointer, kept us company. Farm life was a fascinating topic of conversation. Besides spending a lot of time on the stoep, we also relished Bertus’ delicious Wagyu beef boerewors, cooked on the impressive indoor braai. We even took a leisurely stroll to the nearby waterfall.

Next, we went to Calitzdorp.

Danielskraal Farm, dating back to the early 1800s, offers an enchanting blend of English country living and African charm. The farm is now an exclusive guesthouse, owned and managed by Rosheen Kriegler and Sandra Galbraith. These two ladies have a knack for making you feel like royalty. They have countless captivating farm stories to share, some of which involve their pet sheep. On the stoep, you can sink into plush couches while enjoying a good book. The dining tables are elegantly decorated, and the bathrooms feature striking harlequin floors and sparkling chandeliers. The rooms effortlessly combine antiques with modern amenities like ice-makers and a Nespresso coffee-maker. Oh, and don’t worry about the coffee pods – they’re provided. It’s astounding that such a beautifully restored manor house is pet-friendly. In the summer, you can cool off in the swimming pool or have a barbecue outdoors. In the winter, you can cozy up by the warm fire in the inviting lounge. CJ Langenhoven, a famous author, once stayed here and even wrote a book during his visit. Once you experience the charm of Danielskraal Farm, you may find it hard to leave.

If you’re in the mood for a cozy and artistic countryside experience, look no further than Kraaldoorn Farm Cottage on the Calitzdorp Art Route in the Groenfontein Valley. As soon as I arrived, I could feel the warmth and charm of this place. Our host, Peter Coe, not only an artist but also a published author, had already started a fire in the lounge, creating a cozy atmosphere despite the chilly winter winds outside.

When I crawled into bed, surrounded by soft flannel sheets and pillowcases, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia. It was like being transported back to my childhood, where warmth and comfort defined my sleeping experience. The next morning, leaving that cocoon of coziness was a challenge in itself.

While you’re there, make sure to spend some time chatting with Peter. He’s a fascinating character and will happily show you some of his unique and creative installations around the property. And if you happen to be there on a Sunday night, take a short trip down the road to a neighboring farm, where you can enjoy watching a movie under the stars.

Kraaldoorn Farm Cottage offers a perfect blend of art, rural charm, and warm hospitality. It’s the kind of place that wraps you in comfort and leaves an indelible impression. So, if you’re in search of a unique and relaxing getaway, this is the place for you.

Now, let’s talk about the pet policy. The good news is that all dogs are welcome here! They’ll have a fantastic time exploring the farm and walking along the valley’s roads. And don’t worry, the property is completely fenced, so your furry friend can enjoy the deck safely.

Hey, I’m Andre Hagen, and this is my dog, Ashley Brownlee. We’re the proud owners of Wolverfontein.

Places where your furry friend is more than welcome

Here are some awesome places that love dogs! As long as they’re well-behaved and on a leash, they’ll get a warm reception, treats, and even a special doggie menu.

• The Orchard in Montagu is a great spot where your pup can join you.

• Diesel & Crème and The Karoo Daisy in Barrydale are two places that even have a dog-friendly policy. You can find them on Facebook at @dieselandcreme.

Have you heard about Ronnie’s Sex Shop near Barrydale? Don’t worry, it’s not what it sounds like! They welcome dogs and you can find them on Facebook at Ronnies Sex Shop & Roadkill Cafe.

• Ladismith is where you can find Gypsy’s Gin Bar, Bistro, and Deli. They’re totally cool with dogs joining in the fun. Check them out on Facebook at @GypsysLadismithR62.

• In Calitzdorp, there are three cool places that are pet-friendly: Bella de Karoo, Die Bakhuis, and De Krans. Head over to their Facebook page at @www.belladekaroo.co.za for more info.

When you visit Kraaldoorn, you might be in for a surprise visit from the resident donkeys. Imagine sipping a hot cup of Karoo coffee on the deck while these friendly creatures wander by.

At Oudstoorn

As you arrive at Red Stone Hills, you’ll have to give three quick honks and ring an old school bell to let Petro Potgieter know you’re here. This unique tradition is part of the charm of this fifth-generation working ostrich farm. Petro is often busy tending to the farm, and due to the iron oxide in the surrounding rocks, cellphone reception is quite poor. That’s why this place is a favorite among pet owners, especially during the Outeniqua Dog Show when it gets fully booked. Our cozy Vineyard Cottage, which dates back to 1876, welcomes guests with comfortable leather couches surrounding an indoor fireplace. There are also two braai areas, one indoors and one in the open, and a spacious table on the stoep where you can savor your delicious braai. At this farm, you can truly unwind – nobody minds if you happen to track in a bit of mud or leave paw prints on the tiles. Witnessing the stunning sunsets and sunrises over the red hills is an experience like no other. And don’t be alarmed if you hear the mighty roar of a lion at night – it’s just the male ostriches on the farm, making their booming calls during mating season.

If you’re looking for an affordable place to stay, Redstone Cottages offers rates starting from R700 for two people. You can reach them at 072 901 5654 or visit their website at redstone.co.za.

Now, let’s talk about their pet policy. The great news is that all types of dogs are welcome at Redstone Cottages. However, please note that during the Outeniqua Dog Show, the place gets fully booked, so plan your stay accordingly. While some of the cottages are fenced, if your dog is an adventurer, keep an eye on them as they might try to explore beyond the boundaries.

I was amazed to discover that the cottages at Red Stone Hills have their own unique themes and are spread out, providing guests with ample privacy in their own little haven.

Despite being located on a working ostrich farm, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Berluda Farmhouse offers a pet-friendly cottage. Fortunately, the ostriches are not directly outside your door, so you don’t have to worry about any encounters with their large toes and beaks! You can choose to cook your own meals or indulge in a delightful Karoo dinner. For breakfast, you can even savor scrambled ostrich eggs in the dining room.

The cottage accommodates up to five people and starts at R2,850 per night, inclusive of breakfast. If you have any questions or wish to make a booking, you can contact Berluda Farmhouse at 044 272 7774 or visit their website at berluda.co.za.

When it comes to pets, well-behaved dogs are welcome to stay in the cottage. However, please note that they are not allowed in the dining room, and there isn’t a fence around the cottage.

For two decades, Berluda has opened its doors to guests and their furry companions, providing spacious cottages and enchanting gardens.

Exciting news just arrived – Africamps Klein Karoo now welcomes pets too! Although I haven’t had the chance to stay there yet, I’m an avid fan of the Africamps glamping experience.

Stay for just R1 740 per night for two people. To make a booking, give them a call at 063 170 4222 / 021 300 5694, or visit their website at africamps.com.
