I’m excited to share with you some amazing information about Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge! It’s a fantastic place located just 35km from the eastern border of Golden Gate Highlands National Park. What’s really cool is that it’s part of a big project called the Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Project.

This project is all about creating a protected area that connects uKhahlamba Drakensberg National Park in South Africa with Sehlathebe National Park in Lesotho. They want to make a conservation corridor that stretches over a whopping 32,690 hectares along the Lesotho border.

When I saw the sunset from Witsiehoek Mountain Lodge, it took my breath away (unless clouds got in the way!). The photo by Melanie van Zyl captures its beauty perfectly.

Witsieshoek is an amazing project that started in the 1970s. It was originally a state enterprise, but now it’s owned by the Batlokoa community of QwaQwa. Over the years, it has grown from having only two-percent occupancy to now reaching 38 percent. This progress was made possible through a partnership with Transfrontier Park Destinations. The lodge has also recently obtained Fair Trade certification. Sitting at 2220 meters above sea level, it proudly claims the title of the highest lodge in the Northern Drakensberg. It’s the perfect base for exploring the magnificent peaks that define the region.

Let’s plan your weekend getaway to Witsieshoek:

Cost: It will cost you around R1600 per person.
Duration: You get to enjoy two nights of tranquility and adventure.
Special sights: Expect stunning waterfalls and breathtaking heights that will leave you in awe.

As I stood beneath the awe-inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the Basotho woman in her traditional blanket. The sight was truly breathtaking, and the chalets that dotted the landscape offered stunning views of the mountains.

Let’s Talk About Day Two

If you’re looking for a day hike near Witsieshoek, you have plenty of options to choose from. One of the most popular ones is the Drakensberg Chain Ladder hike. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be super fit to do it, but keep in mind that the high altitude can have an impact on you. Make sure to allocate about eight hours for the entire round trip.

As you follow the trail, you’ll be amazed by the towering peaks and the breathtaking drops below. The view from up here is simply mind-boggling. You might even spot some birds of prey soaring through the sky. Be prepared for two sections of chain ladders with around 50 rungs each. Take it slow and be calm as you climb. Safety first!

Once you reach the top, it’s just a short 25-minute walk to the edge of the Amphitheatre. At an impressive 2926 meters above the ground, you’ll be able to look down into the Tugela Gorge, which lies a whole thousand meters beneath you. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Keep in mind that there’s a hiking fee of R75 per person. Also, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to extend your stay, you can choose to camp overnight on the plateau instead of returning to Witsieshoek.
