Shamwari Game Reserve MzansiBride

Welcome to the Shamwari Game Reserve!

As I drove up the winding gravel road to the kopjie, raindrops pelted us from every direction, making it hard to see. Luckily, the rain eased off just as we arrived. Our guide, Dimitra, was filled with energy and greeted us with a big smile. She handed me a pan, another guest a gas burner, and someone else a fold-up table. With a coolerbox on her shoulder, she invited us to follow her up the small mountain. “We’re having bush pancakes for breakfast!” she exclaimed when we reached the top after some scrambling.

That was how we started our first morning game drive at the Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. We found ourselves on a rugged kopjie, overlooking 25,000 hectares of untouched private bushveld, savoring freshly-made cinnamon and syrup pancakes. It was truly a delightful treat!

Earlier that morning, I watched a pride of lions preparing for a hunt in the misty landscape. It was like a painting, maybe something an artist would create with watercolors. The rain had a magnificent smell, refreshing the ground after breaking the dry soil. The grass was splendid, covered with glistening raindrops. The lions eventually abandoned their hunt and moved away. I followed them for some time before heading towards the kopjie.

I asked Dimtra if she had a favorite wildlife encounter, and she told me that each one was so unique and different that it was difficult to choose just one. She did mention, however, that one of the most bizarre sightings she had was a zebra sitting on top of another zebra that was lying down. It was quite a peculiar sight!

I was also curious about why Dimtra had decided to leave her career as an architect and live a solitary life in the wilderness. “It nourishes my soul,” she explained. “It’s not just that I want to be out here; I need to be out here.”

During one of our leisurely afternoon game drives, we had an incredible sighting of a black rhino. It was one of the best sightings we ever had. In addition to that, we were lucky enough to come across some unusual creatures, such as a brown hyena, a bat-eared fox, and a spring hare.

I never visited a game reserve in the Eastern Cape before. As someone who grew up in the Lowveld bush, I had no clue what to expect. The grasslands are filled with plains game, while the dense bush in the mountain valleys is home to relaxed black rhinos and elusive leopards. The best part is that there’s something here for everyone, no matter what you’re looking for.

During my stay, I lodged at Long Lee Manor, a grand Edwardian homestead that overlooks the Bushman’s River. The main part of the house has a rich pioneer history, as it was built by a wagon-wheel maker who made a good fortune from passersby. It feels a bit like the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, except it’s situated in the bush – the pink lady of the Eastern Cape.

Shamwari Game Reserve is a fantastic destination worth recommending.

If you’re traveling along the Garden Route, don’t miss the chance to visit Shamwari. It’s just a short detour and only 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth. Getting there is easy with daily flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. Plus, you don’t have to worry about malaria as it’s a malaria-free area. But Shamwari offers more than just the Big Five animals – there’s so much to see!

Shamwari is a diverse place with five of South Africa’s seven biomes. They even have two unique Born Free Sanctuaries right on the property. And they’re associated with the Wilderness Foundation, so you know they care about preserving wildlife. Their anti-poaching unit is one of the best in the country. Not to mention, they’re also doing their part for the environment by using bio fuel in two of their game drive vehicles.

Now, let’s talk about the highlights – my favorite parts of Shamwari. First, I have to tell you about the incredible black rhino sighting we had. It was honestly one of the best sightings I’ve ever experienced. And if you’re in the mood for a special treat, you can enjoy delicious pancakes right in the bush. It’s a unique and delightful experience!

If you’re staying at Long Lee Manor, make sure you ask about their brand-new suites at the bottom of the terrace. They’ve been beautifully decorated and offer plenty of space.

Here are some of the activities and facilities you can enjoy:

– Game drives and walks to explore the wildlife

– Relaxation retreats at the spa for some pampering

– The Born Free Foundation for animal lovers

– Wedding facilities to make your special day unforgettable

Now, let’s talk about the accommodation options at Shamwari. They have a total of seven lodges to choose from:
