Discover the Hidden Routes: Maun to Khwai’s Magotho campsite
Let me take you on an adventure to some secret routes in Botswana. It’s a journey that only a reliable 4×4 with the right tires can conquer. Pack your bags as we explore the Khwai community concession’s Magotho campsite.
Tucked away between the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park lies the Khwai Development Trust, an 180,000-hectare community concession. Most travelers who visit these two famous parks are unaware of this hidden gem. They only use its transit road to move between the two parks. However, I have uncovered a hidden treasure for you. Along the northern banks of the Khwai River, a network of sandy 4×4 tracks awaits, filled with thrilling water crossings, narrow wooden bridges, and winding paths through dense riverine woodland. This concession is the ultimate playground to test your off-road skills, especially when equipped with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tires.
These remarkable tires have a special feature called Advanced Deflection Design. Created using computer prediction, it is perfect for deflecting objects like loose stones and fallen branches away from the tire sidewalls. The sidewalls themselves are built tough with thick, bruise-resistant shoulder rubber, making them 20% stronger than the previous All-Terrain T/A K0 tires. With these top-notch tires, you can confidently navigate the challenging terrain of the Khwai community concession.
When you’re out driving in Khwai Development Trust, not only do you get to enjoy the thrill of the open road, but you also have the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of wildlife. Antelope, elephants, hippos, and even big cats can be spotted in this area. Despite its small size, the southern section of the trust offers plenty of tracks to explore. You can easily cover them all in a single day, but I highly recommend spending a night at the Magotho campsite.
Magotho is a self-sufficient campsite that offers a truly immersive experience. Located close to the Khwai River, you’ll be able to hear the soothing sounds of hippos at night. And when you wake up in the morning, you’ll be greeted by fresh animal tracks next to your own tire tracks. It’s a beautiful and serene way to start another day in one of the wildest places on our planet.

How to Find Magotho Campsite
If you’re starting from Maun, you’ll want to head northeast on the B334 road. It’s a journey of about 38 kilometers until you reach Shorobe. Don’t worry, the road is fairly straightforward and easy to follow.
As you continue on, you’ll notice the road transitioning from a smooth, gravel road to a calcrete road with some bumps. It’s nothing to worry about, but just be prepared for a slightly rougher ride.
As you venture deeper into your journey, don’t be surprised if you encounter some patches of deep sand along with the occasional water crossing. It adds a touch of adventure to the experience!
Keep going past Mababe village until you reach Khwai village. This should be the point where you turn off the main road to Magotho campsite. You’ll find the turn-off about 17 kilometers past Mababe village, so keep an eye out.
Before heading to Magotho campsite, you’ll need to check in at the Khwai Community Trust offices first. Once you’ve taken care of that, you can make your way back to the campsite to start your adventure.
Just a word of advice, make sure to allocate at least three hours for the entire journey. It’s always better to have some extra time to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and maybe even spot some wildlife along the way.
And if you need any assistance or have any questions, you can always reach out to the Maun office at +2676801211. They’ll be happy to help you out!
Camping: what you need to know
When it comes to camping at the Khwai Development Trust, there aren’t any official gates to go through. Instead, you’ll need to make your way to the Khwai village offices, open between 8am and 4pm, where you’ll need to check in. They’ll be able to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
For day visits, the cost is approximately R190 per person. This allows you to enjoy the beauty of the area for a limited time. However, if you want a more immersive experience and wish to spend the night under the stars, you can choose to camp at the Magotho campsite. For R390 per person, this fee includes entry into the area, giving you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in nature.
Whether you prefer a day visit or an overnight adventure, the Khwai Development Trust offers a range of options to suit your needs. By following the necessary procedures and paying the appropriate fees, you can enjoy all that this stunning destination has to offer.
