Hey there! I have some exciting news for you about Stellenbosch’s beloved bakery. It’s making a grand comeback on Bird Street! How cool is that?
See, Schoon De Companje used to be located on Church Street, and it was a huge hit. But then they moved to Somerset West, and all the locals, as well as hungry visitors, had to make the journey there for their favorite cappuccinos and croissants. It was a bit of a mission, you know? But guess what? Schoon is now back in Stellenbosch, bringing its magic to two brand-new locations. How awesome is that?
In a bold move to expand the culinary landscape, we launched Schoon Manufactory on Bird Street last month. Our brand-new venture includes a bustling bakery, along with a patisserie and kitchen, expertly managed by co-owner Chanelle Schoon. Bird Street may not be renowned for its food or shopping scene, but that’s exactly why we chose to take a leap of faith and introduce a fresh dining experience to the area.
“It’s time to unlock the untapped potential of this town. That’s why we decided to open a shop and café in this bustling production space,” explains co-owner Fritz Schoon.
Welcome to the brand new Schoon Café. I’m excited to share that our café-bakery is inspired by the charming bakeries of France. Here, you can savor delicious pastries while witnessing our team in action, as they knead the dough, fold in ingredients, whisk batters, and expertly ice our delectable creations. Our aim is to combine all our talents in one space, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.
As one of the bakers, I feel thrilled to be a part of this endeavor. Our team, which has grown since our days at Oude Bank Bakkerij, brings together a wealth of expertise. Personally, I’m back at the bread-shaping table, doing what I love. The best part is that our new space allows us to move around freely, giving us a sense of freedom and creativity that is truly amazing.
Experience and Enjoy Schoon Café

You’ll have the perfect vantage point to watch our talented baking team work their magic, all while taking advantage of our complimentary parking. Our café provides an intimate setting for you to indulge in your favorite treats, which are crafted with care using high-quality ingredients sourced from local farmers.
We’re always exploring new and exciting menu options, but don’t worry – we haven’t forgotten about our beloved classics. You can still savor our famous scrambled eggs on sourdough toast, served with slow-roasted tomatoes and smoked bacon. Or perhaps you’d prefer a Croque Madame or our mouthwatering brioche French toast, made with roasted apple, brie, buchu syrup, and clotted cream.
Welcome to Schoon Croissant & Coffee Bar
If you’re looking for a tasty treat but find yourself too busy to take a break, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the deliciousness of Schoon without slowing down. Just head to the bustling courtyard at De Wet Centre, right off Church Street, where you’ll find another amazing Schoon project: the Schoon Croissant & Coffee Bar, opening on June 18th.
I’ve always had a soft spot for this little corner,” says Fritz. “Life can get pretty crazy, and it’s hard to find time for yourself. But this cozy spot is a perfect place for people to slow down and savor something handcrafted, even in the midst of a busy day.”
