Sanbona: Reconnecting with Nature on a Route 62 Road Trip

When I think of a perfect road trip destination, one place that immediately comes to mind is Sanbona. Nestled on Route 62 in South Africa, Sanbona offers a truly magical experience for nature lovers like me.

From the moment you arrive, you can sense the tranquility that permeates this place. The vast open landscapes, dotted with majestic mountains, create a sense of awe and reverence. It’s as if nature itself is welcoming you with open arms, inviting you to explore and discover its secrets.

As I ventured further into the heart of Sanbona, I was captivated by the sheer diversity of its wildlife. From graceful cheetahs and majestic elephants to playful meerkats and elusive leopards, I encountered a myriad of fascinating creatures. Each encounter felt like a gift, an opportunity to witness the beauty and resilience of these magnificent animals.

But Sanbona is not only home to an incredible array of wildlife; it also boasts an impressive variety of plant species. The rich, vibrant colors of the fynbos vegetation and the delicate, intricate patterns of the succulents create a visual feast for the eyes. It’s a reminder of the intricate web of life that exists in every corner of this extraordinary place.

One of the highlights of my trip was experiencing the pure silence that envelops Sanbona. Far away from the noise and distractions of modern life, I could hear the gentle rustling of leaves, the melodious chirping of birds, and the distant roar of a lion. It was a symphony of nature, a reminder of how precious and fragile our world is.

Exploring Sanbona on a road trip along Route 62 is an adventure that will stay with you forever. It’s a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with nature and with yourself. So, if you’re longing for an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I highly recommend embarking on this unforgettable road trip.

At Sanbona, you’ll find solace in the simplicity of nature, inspiration in its raw beauty, and a renewed appreciation for the wonders of our planet. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and let the magic of Sanbona unfold before your eyes. Trust me, it’s a trip you won’t soon forget.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve A Road Trip along Route 62

Let me tell you, the trip to this reserve is well worth a stop or maybe even three along the way.

You won’t believe it, but Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is less than four hours away from Cape Town. And get this, the route you take passes through a section of Route 62. So, why not make your visit a mini road trip? (Psst! Here’s a top tip for you: Save the town of Robertson for the return journey.)

Ready to hit the road?

Heading out on the N1 past Paarl, I discovered that the town of Wellington, located in the neighboring Winelands, has a charming wine route. The wineries are conveniently close to each other, making it easy to explore. Continuing on the R60, I came across the exquisite Nuy Valley, a hidden gem of a wine region. The road to Saggy Stone Brewery branches off from Nuy Road, offering a delightful detour.

In Robertson, I found that the best way to visit the wine farms is to take the Wine Valley Safari. This unique experience allows you to hop on and off an open-air vehicle, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, Strictly Coffee is the place to go. This trendy deli not only offers delicious meals but also serves amazing milkshakes. And for those looking to relax, a short drive down the R317 will take you to Viljoensdrift winery, where you can enjoy a scenic boat cruise on the Breede River.

Hey there, let’s talk about Ashton. Have you heard of it? It’s a place you definitely don’t want to miss. You’ll find it along the main road, just look out for the steam engine. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Why should you go there? Well, it’s a haven for wine lovers. At Platform 62, you’ll be treated to a wide variety of over 750 locally produced wines. Not only that, you can also get your hands on Klein Karoo’s famous brandies and an amazing selection of artisanal spirits. It’s a paradise for your taste buds!

But wait, there’s more! If you have some extra time, take a little detour down the R60 towards Swellendam. You’ll come across La Montanara, a cheesy heaven where you can indulge in some wine pairing. And don’t forget to pay a visit to Mardouw Olives for a delicious tasting experience.

Oh, and Greenlands Farm Table is a must-visit too. Their ice creams are out of this world. Imagine flavors like chenin blanc and lemon, grenache and raspberry, and gorgonzola and honey. Yum!

When I was in Ashton, I traveled along the Route R62, which took me through the beautiful Kogmanskloof. The views from the viewpoint were absolutely stunning! After that, I arrived in the charming town of Montagu, which is known for its rich history.

Montagu has so much to offer. One place you definitely don’t want to miss is The Pastry Place. They have the most delicious pastries that will surely satisfy your sweet tooth. Another must-visit spot is Fijn Botanicals, where you can find amazing body products made from fynbos oil.

Montagu also has a vibrant art scene. There’s an “art district” in town that revolves around the KWV Gallery, Ibis Gallery, Hicks Gallery, and Belinda Hewer Studio. You can explore this area and discover some incredible artworks.

If you’re looking for a unique way to get around Montagu, why not try a vintage Cadillac with a chauffeur? You can hire one from the Montagu Country Hotel and have a stylish tour of the town or visit one of the nearby wine estates. Alternatively, you can rent a Dutch bicycle from Flying Feet and go sightseeing for an hour. These bikes are decorated by local artists, making your ride even more fun and colorful.

Montagu is a hidden gem with so much to offer. Exploring this town was a truly unforgettable experience for me, and I’m sure you’ll love it too!

When I think of Montagu, I can’t help but imagine the delicious ice treats that await me on the 58km drive to Sanbona’s gates. But if you’re an ice treat enthusiast like me, you might want to extend your journey a bit further down the R62 to Barrydale. There, you’ll find Diesel & Crème, a place renowned for their milkshakes that are legendary.
