What’s great about small plates is that you get to try a variety of dishes. Instead of committing to just one main course, you have the opportunity to sample and explore different flavors. It’s like embarking on a culinary adventure!
So, if you’re looking for a place to enjoy delicious small plates, Salt is the place to be. With its cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and incredible menu, it’s a dining experience you don’t want to miss. Trust me, you’ll leave with a satisfied belly and a smile on your face!
When I walked into Salt, I was instantly taken aback by its charm. It’s not just the fabulous location or the young and vibrant owner, but the whole experience that leaves a lasting impression on you. From the moment you step foot in this small-plates joint in Kalk Bay, you are transported to a world of culinary delight.
As I sat down and perused the menu, I couldn’t help but agree with British chef Angela Harnett when she said, “The sign of a good restaurant is when it takes you ages to decide what to have.” The chalkboard menu at Salt is a treasure trove of delectable dishes that make it nearly impossible to choose just one.
What sets Salt apart is not only the mouthwatering food but also the story behind it. The restaurant is the brainchild of Nic Macleod, a 24-year-old entrepreneur who oozes hospitality and warmth. Nic’s passion for food and his dedication to creating a memorable dining experience is evident in every aspect of Salt.
From the moment I walked in, Nic made me feel like a guest in his home. He took the time to explain each dish on the menu, sharing the inspiration behind them and the flavors that make them special. It felt like an omakase-style tour of his culinary creations.
A fusion of flavors
“I was really inspired by the history of the Cape as a trading post,” says Nic. “Back in the day, ships would arrive at the Cape of Good Hope, bringing all sorts of amazing flavors and influences with them.” That’s why Salt’s menu is a unique combination of flavors from all around the world. There’s ceviche with lemon, grapefruit, and honey from South America, Bánh mì pork belly with a soy reduction, slaw, and coriander from Vietnam and Germany, curried lentils with pickled beetroot and chermoula croutons from India, Korea, and Morocco, and wasabi-dusted calamari with lemon and chilli from Greece and Japan. And if you’re in the mood for something more hearty, you can try the Chalmar sirloin with pebre salsa and patatas bravas from Spain, or the Bratwurst roti with homemade kimchi and sriracha mustard from Germany, India, Korea, and Thailand.
“I’ve mixed together the elements of cuisines that I enjoy,” I say. “Bratwurst on its own doesn’t do it for me, so I decided to switch it up by putting it in a roti and serving it with kimchi.” The result is absolutely delicious, even though I’m not usually a fan of sausage. And to avoid any confusion, I’ve made a conscious effort not to use the word ‘tapas’ because it typically refers to Spanish small plates. At Salt, we offer a variety of dishes from different culinary traditions.”
A healthy twist on flavorful food
I’ve managed to master the concept of “health food made tasty” – all of my ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and ethically sourced. Whenever possible, I opt for organic options. “I grew up eating this way,” I explain. “It’s second nature to me to prepare food using these principles. I’d rather spend a little extra on hormone- and antibiotic-free meat and poultry than compromise on quality.” And to add a quirky note, “our fridge is so small that we have to buy fresh produce every day!”
Satisfying Your Thirst
Let me tell you about Salt’s impressive selection of drinks. It’s a concise winelist put together by Nic and his dad, and it’s filled with hidden gems. One of those gems is Waterkloof’s Cape Coral Mourvèdre Circumstance, a wine that Nic considers one of the best in the country. But it’s not just the wine that’s great – the prices are also very reasonable. You won’t find any outrageous markups here. Nic believes in offering quality without breaking the bank. And if wine isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Salt also has a variety of craft beers on tap and in bottles. And when it comes to coffee, they serve nothing but the best – Damn Fine coffee.
An Eclectic Blend
When I step into this place, I can’t help but feel an eclectic mix of styles and influences coming together. There’s no specific theme here, but rather a delightful mishmash of elements that carry with them their own stories and histories. It’s like stepping into a time capsule, each piece with its own tale to tell.
This place used to be a Spanish tapas bar called La Parada, and you can still see hints of its vibrant character. But alongside those remnants, there are new additions that have been carefully curated by Nic’s art-therapist mom. It’s a harmonious blend of old and new, creating a space that feels both familiar and fresh.
One element that catches my eye is the row of Victorian-style street lamps hanging above the wooden counters. It adds a touch of whimsy and elegance to the space. And those counters, they serve as gathering spots for 50 diners, with bar stools inviting you to take a seat and stay a while.
It’s truly remarkable how the different pieces come together to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It’s a place where you can feel at home, surrounded by stories and memories, waiting to create your own. So come on in, take a seat at the counter, and let the magic of this unique space capture your imagination.
I’ve always been filled with ideas and inspiration, constantly jotting them down as they come to me. It was as if I knew deep down that one day I would have my own restaurant. So when the opportunity arose, I was ready to bring all those ideas to life.
That’s how Salt came to be. With its elegant decor, each table adorned with a delicate glass of short-stemmed roses, a pewter beer mug filled with cutlery and napkins, and vintage salt and pepper canisters that I came across years ago in a charming restaurant. It’s these small details that make all the difference.
Salt is a place that can accommodate up to 50 diners, making it perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re celebrating a special birthday or just want to spontaneously drop by for a quick bite, you’ll always find a seat waiting for you. And for those who enjoy the buzz of the streets and the view of the harbor, the counter facing the street is the perfect spot to perch.
We take pride in crafting delicious dishes that will satisfy any palate. From leisurely lunches to unforgettable nights out, our menu has something for everyone. But make sure to save room for our signature Lindt chocolate fondant – it’s an absolute must-try that will leave you craving for more.
