Welcome to Sabie: A Paradise for Outdoor Adventurers

Hey there! I have to tell you about this incredible place called Sabie. It’s like a dream come true for anyone who loves outdoor adventures. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

Now, if you’re into mountain biking, Sabie is the place to be. It’s like the heartland of mountain biking. And the best part is that there’s something for everyone, no matter your age or skill level.

There’s this epic event called the Sabie Experience that happens every December. It’s a four-day mountain biking stage race that attracts some seriously fit folks. But let me tell you, it’s no joke. With a whopping 270 kilometers to conquer and over 4000 meters of climbs, it’s not for the faint of heart. Plus, you have to deal with the sticky humidity of that time of year. But hey, if you’re up for the challenge, go for it!

Now, if that sounds a bit too intense for you, don’t worry. Sabie has plenty of other options. They’ve got a whole network of roads that wind through the beautiful pine and bluegum plantations. These routes are perfect for families who want a more leisurely biking experience. You can explore these trails all year round and soak in the stunning scenery.

But wait, there’s more! If you’re feeling adventurous and up for some serious thrill-seeking, Sabie has some mind-blowing single-track options for you. These trails are designed for those hardcore bikers who love a good challenge. With steep hills and tricky terrain, you better bring your A-game. But trust me, the rush you’ll get when conquering those trails is totally worth it.

Have you ever wanted to take a scenic drive that leads you through mountains and forests? Well, there’s a route I know that might just be perfect for you! It’s a gravel road that starts on Long Tom Pass, right across from Misty Mountain Hotel. This road isn’t in the best condition, but that’s part of its charm. It adds a sense of adventure and excitement to the journey. As you make your way down, you’ll pass through beautiful pine plantations and a picturesque valley. Along the way, keep an eye out for Horseshoe Falls, a natural wonder that you won’t want to miss. After about 15 kilometers, you’ll reach the old Lydenburg road, right on the edge of town. The best part? You don’t need a fancy car to drive this road. A bakkie or SUV will do just fine!

Hey there! Let me tell you about a cool place in Sabie where you can have a great time. So, I was walking around and I stumbled upon a bunch of teenagers on a school trip from Reunion. They were trying to catch some fish for lunch at a place called Horseshoe Trout & About. It’s an awesome hatchery and adventure center near Horseshoe Falls.

Now, if those teenagers didn’t manage to hook a rainbow trout, they would have to settle for a salad for lunch. Talk about pressure! But hey, that’s what makes this place so much fun. You see, anyone can learn how to fly-fish here. And if you’re not into that, you can always use a regular fishing rod.

For beginners, there’s a well-stocked training dam where you can practice your fishing skills. The manager, Paul Rose-Nel, told me that it’s nearly impossible not to catch a fish there. So, you’re pretty much guaranteed some success!

If you’re more experienced, you can move on to another dam where catch-and-release fishing is the way to go. They also have some rules about fly-fishing etiquette, so make sure you follow them. Oh, and by the way, they’re closed on Tuesdays…unless they’re open. Gotta love that quirky sign!

So, if you’re in Sabie looking for a fun and exciting adventure, make sure you check out Horseshoe Trout & About. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

More things to do in Sabie

Exploring the waterfalls is a must-do in Sabie! One of the most amazing waterfalls to visit is Lone Creek Falls, which is located just nine kilometers outside of town. To get there, you’ll need to take the old Lydenburg road. Once you arrive at the picnic and braai area, you’ll embark on a 200-meter walk through a beautiful natural forest. As you make your way, don’t forget to admire the scenery and embrace the tranquility of the surroundings. Eventually, you’ll cross a footbridge and find yourself at the base of the falls, where you can marvel at the breathtaking pool. The entrance fee is only R5 per person, and the trail leading to the falls is suitable for wheelchair users. For more information, you can contact Komatiland Eco-tourism at 013-754-2724 or visit their website at www.komatiecotourism.co.za.

Sabie River Falls, located right in town, are easily accessible. However, the grandeur of the waterfall is somewhat diminished by the presence of a large bridge that carries the R532 to Graskop directly over it. It’s unclear why the roads department decided to build the bridge in such close proximity to the falls. Luckily, there is a friendly volunteer guide who can direct you to a viewpoint underneath the bridge. The best part? There is no entrance fee for this experience, but it’s polite to tip the guide for their efforts in keeping the area safe for visitors. Just be cautious of the gaps in the fences along the cliff edges, as repairs are still pending from the municipality.

Despite the inconvenience, the bridge does have its advantages. It lends itself well to bridge swings, which is a thrilling activity offered by Sabie Backpackers & Adventure Centre. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try abseiling in the Sabie Falls gorge through the same establishment. For more information, you can contact them at 013-764-2118 or visit their website at www.sabiextreme.co.za.

Tubing is a super fun activity that you can do with your family, and it won’t cost you a dime. You can try it out on a two-kilometer stretch of the Sabie River, where the water is usually shallow, only about a meter deep. To start your tubing adventure, you can hop into the water at the low bridge on the road that leads to Bridal Veil Falls. And when you’re ready to wrap it up, you can make your way to the low causeway just outside Merry Pebbles Resort. If you don’t have tubes, no worries! You can buy them at the resort’s shop for between R30 to R50, depending on their size.

Hiking is another fantastic activity that you can explore while you’re here. One of the most popular trails is called the Loerie. It’s a circular route that covers about 14 kilometers. The trail starts at the Castle Rock Municipal Caravan Park and takes you along the beautiful Sabie River. You’ll pass by Bridal Veil Falls, Glynis Falls, and Elna Falls, and then make your way to a ridge that offers breathtaking views of the entire Sabie Valley. After that, you’ll head back on a forestry track. But if you prefer a shorter hike, you can do a 6.5-kilometer version starting from the car park at Bridal Veil Falls. Just remember that you’ll need a permit, and it costs R20 per person. You can get your permit from Big Sky in Main Road, Sabie. Their phone number is 013-764-2682.

The Fanie Botha Hiking Trail is an amazing adventure that takes you along the edge of the escarpment from Sabie to God’s Window. It’s a well-known trail that offers stunning views and a connection with nature. You have the option to choose the full five-night route or go for shorter options. If you’re looking for a starting point, the hut at Ceylon plantation on the way to Bridal Veil Falls is one option. It costs R105 per person per night, and you can contact them at 013-754-2724 or visit their website www.komatiecotourism.co.za.

If you’re into birding, you’re in for a treat. The remnant patches of indigenous forest along the trail are a haven for bird species. In fact, around 220 species have been identified in the area. Some of the birds you may come across include the African olive-pigeon, red-chested cuckoo, diderick cuckoo, and Knysa turaco. It’s truly a paradise for bird watchers.

Fishing – Hey, fishing is a big deal around here, especially for trout. You can go fly-fishing and practice catch-and-release all year. But, make sure you get a permit before you cast your line. Don’t worry, you can get one from Big Sky Flyfishing & Outdoor on Main Road. They’ve got everything you need for fishing and camping, and they can even help you book a spot at Horseshoe Trout & About. It’s a great place for beginners to try pond fishing. It costs R50 for adults and R20 for kids to get in, and if you catch anything, it’s R80 per kilo. Oh, and if you don’t have a fishing rod, they’ll rent you one for R30. Cool, huh? Call them at 013-764-2682 or visit www.bigskyoutdoor.co.za to find out more.

Horse riding – Who’s up for a horseback adventure? You can go on guided outrides with Sabie Horse Trails. They’ve got stables off the old Lydenburg road, and their rides take you along the Sabie River and to Bridal Veils Falls. How cool is that? You’ve got a few options when it comes to how long you want to ride. You can go for one, two, or three hours. The prices are R150, R250, and R350 per person, respectively. If you’re interested, give Sherae Jardine a call at 076-894-9889.

Middle of nowhere, right here in Sabie, you’ll find the ultimate mountain biking haven: Cycle Junkies. If you think you have what it takes, they’ve got the perfect routes for you. For just R30 per person per day, you can get permits to explore their network of thrilling single track routes. Need a bike? No problem. Rent one for only R60 per hour or R300 for the entire day. If you want some extra guidance, you can hire a knowledgeable guide for R100 per hour. Alternatively, you can opt for a custom route programmed into a GPS for R200. Just give them a call at 013-764-1149 or visit their website at www.cyclejunkies.co.za.

Looking for a more relaxed sporting activity? Look no further than golf at the Sabie Country Club. Located on the outskirts of town, surrounded by majestic mountains, their nine-hole course offers a serene and picturesque setting. As a visitor, you can enjoy a round of golf for a reasonable fee: R80 for nine holes or R120 for 18. To book your tee time, call 013-764-2287 or visit www.sabiegolf.com.

Scenic Drives:

Long Tom Pass is truly a sight to behold. It’s one of the most breathtaking drives you can experience in the entire country. As you wind your way down the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment, between Mashishing (formerly Lydenburg) and Sabie, you’ll be amazed by the beauty that surrounds you. This pass has a rich history, as it follows the same path that ox wagons traveled during the old days. It’s awe-inspiring to think about the journey those travelers took.

During your drive, make a stop to see a remarkable replica of the Long Tom cannon. This cannon played a significant role in the Anglo Boer War, as the Boer forces used it against the British. With a range of nine kilometers, it caused some serious damage. In fact, if you look closely, you can still see the remnants of that damage higher up the pass. It’s a reminder of the power and impact of the events that took place there.

Long Tom Pass offers more than just history, though. Along the way, you’ll come across various viewpoints and picnic spots, allowing you to take in the stunning scenery at your own pace. If you drive from Mashishing to Sabie, you’ll have the added benefit of having the best viewpoints on your left side, making it easy to pull over and soak in the majestic views. You won’t be able to resist capturing some beautiful photos.

Prepare to be in awe of the panoramic vistas that stretch out before you. This drive is a feast for the eyes and a true testament to the natural wonders of our country. So, grab your keys, hit the road, and embark on an unforgettable adventure through Long Tom Pass.

I’m a long-distance runner. Every year in March, I take part in the Long Tom Ultra and Half Marathons, which covers a challenging 56-kilometer route over the Long Tom Pass. It’s known as the “Everest” of ultra marathons because of the high elevations and stunning landscapes it offers.

If you’re looking for a tough race to qualify for the Comrades, the Long Tom Ultra is perfect. The race starts in Sabie, which is already 1000 meters above sea level. From there, it takes you on an incredible climb to Mauchsberg, reaching an altitude of 2150 meters. Finally, you descend to Mashishing, which sits at 1380 meters above sea level.

For more information, you can contact the organizers at Tel 012-346-2400 or visit their website at www.longtominfo.co.za.

Now, let me tell you about another fascinating place to visit in this area – the Sudwala Caves. It’s like a journey into the depths of the Earth, where you can witness incredible rock formations and experience the unique ancient air conditioning system.

If you want to visit the Sudwala Caves, you can take the R37 road from Sabie to Mbombela (Nelspruit) and then turn onto the R539 for another 15 kilometers. You can join the guided one-hour tours for R65 per adult and R35 per child. But if you’re up for a more adventurous experience, they also offer Crystal tours that require advance booking and cost R220 per person.

For more details and to make reservations, you can contact them at Tel 013-733-4152 or visit their website at www.sudwalacaves.co.za.

When you visit the Sudwala Dinosaur Park, you’ll be amazed at the life-size plaster sculptures of ancient creatures that surround you. These realistic settings, filled with cycads, give you a glimpse into a world that existed over 200 million years ago. It’s no wonder that children are captivated by these prehistoric monsters and will likely have many questions for you to answer! Admission costs R40 for adults and R25 for children. To find out more, call 013-733-5268.

If you’re a book lover or collector, Bookcase is the perfect place for you. As you browse through the shelves of this bookstore, you’ll discover a treasure trove of literary gems. From first edition bird guides to fly-fishing handbooks, from bush classics to the musings of Winston Churchill, you’ll find it all here. And yes, they even have trashy novels for those looking for a guilty pleasure. For more information, call 013-764-3342.
