Discover the Beautiful Route 62: Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert
Welcome! I’m here to guide you through an incredible journey along Route 62, where you’ll explore the charming towns of Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert. Let’s dive in and discover all the exciting things you can do!
First up, we have Oudtshoorn, which happens to be the largest town along Route 62. It’s a bustling hub of activity and a must-visit destination. Next, we have Prince Albert, a captivating town that may not be formally part of the Route, but it’s still worth dedicating a daytrip to. Trust me, it won’t disappoint!
Now, let’s talk about the places you absolutely cannot miss along this extraordinary route!
Get Enchanted at Bella de Karoo

Contact: Give them a call at 0442133801 or visit their website at belladekaroo.co.za
This place is absolutely fantastic! It’s a pet-friendly restaurant and accommodation spot located on one of the oldest farms in the Klein Karoo. If you’re traveling from Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn, you have to make a stop here. They serve the most delicious breakfasts and light lunches, and they even have options for vegans and vegetarians like you and me! The menu is super diverse, offering everything from pies and pancakes to bobotie and burgers. They also have a great selection of salads and potatoes. Oh, and did I mention they have an incredible selection of pickles, jams, and confeit? It’s like a dream come true! Plus, they even sell beautiful arts and crafts made by local artisans. Isn’t that amazing?
But that’s not all this place has to offer. If you’re looking for a place to stay, they have unique rooms available for self-catering. And let me tell you, these rooms are something else. They’re cozy and comfortable, and they have a communal braai area where you can gather with friends and family. The best part? The braai area is shaded by a giant Pepper tree. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a barbecue.
If you’re a nature lover, you’re in for a treat. This place is surrounded by beautiful wilderness, just waiting to be explored. Whether you prefer hiking or biking, there are plenty of routes and directions available for you to discover. It’s a great way to get some exercise and take in the stunning scenery.
Welcome to Oudtshoorn!
Ostriches everywhere! You’re close to Oudtshoorn when you start seeing ostrich farms. But did you know that Oudtshoorn used to be a big tobacco growing area? Nowadays, there are more onion fields (they export the seeds), but keep an eye out for the few remaining tobacco barns along the roads. In the ostrich capital, here are six fun things you can do!
1. Surval Boutique Olive Estate
Website: surval.co.za
Phone: 0873501950
An olive tasting at this olive estate is a special experience! Picture tables set up in the olive grove, covered in white tablecloths and loaded with all types of olives, olive jams, olive chutneys, olive oil, and chunks of fresh-baked bread. To accompany these delightful treats, you’ll receive a glass of local wine. While savoring the delicious offerings, you’ll learn about the farm’s history (it used to be an ostrich farm) and the production of olives and olive oil. Prepare to discover fascinating facts, like how olive oil has a sell-by date! Once you open the bottle, you have 30 days to finish it! The estate also offers a tractor and trailer tour through the groves, and their restaurant serves breakfasts, light meals, and traditional dishes, all with stunning views. If you want to treat yourself, consider booking a night or two in one of their stylish rooms. And if you’re getting married, you won’t want to miss their breathtaking honeymoon suite. Surval Boutique Olive Estate also hosts regular family events and functions.

The CP Nel Museum is hands down one of the most impressive museums I’ve ever visited. It used to be a Boys’ High School, but now it’s a gigantic treasure trove of Oudtshoorn’s history. Every room in this massive building is bursting with artifacts that tell the story of this fascinating place, from its glory days during the feather boom to a fully recreated apothecary and general store.
You won’t believe the incredible collections they have on display here. Take a step back in time as you marvel at exquisite ostrich feather outfits and hats. Explore a world of dolls from all corners of the globe. Admire beautiful crockery, hear the music fill the air from antique instruments, and imagine life sitting on the vintage furniture. And that’s not all – there are even cars and wagons that transport you straight into the past.
But the real gem of the CP Nel Museum is something you wouldn’t expect. Tucked away inside is a tiny synagogue that is still used today. It’s a powerful reminder of the diverse community that once thrived in Oudtshoorn and the enduring spirit of those who call it home.
4. Le Roux Townhouse
Contact: Call 0442727306
If you’re curious to see what a house from the “feather boom” era looks like, I recommend checking out Le Roux Townhouse. It was built in 1909 during the second “feather boom” and showcases exquisite craftsmanship. Charles Bullock, a renowned architect, was hired to design the house, which was constructed using top-quality imported and local materials. The sandstone walls, made from dressed stone obtained from nearby quarries, give the house a solid and timeless appearance.
When you step inside, you’ll be transported back in time. The original wallpaper still graces the walls, and the bedroom and sitting room carpets have been faithfully preserved since 1909. Le Roux Townhouse was ahead of its time when it came to modern comforts, boasting the first indoor bathroom and toilet in the area, along with one of the earliest electrical systems. However, what truly steals the show is the stunning stained glass found throughout the house. These colorful, intricate windows add a touch of magic and elegance to every room.
Le Roux Townhouse is not the only remarkable place to visit. Another unique accommodation option is Berluda Farmhouse and Cottages. Set against a backdrop of picturesque farmland, Berluda offers a charming countryside escape. Whether you choose to stay in the cozy farmhouse or the quaint cottages, you’ll be treated to warm hospitality and a serene atmosphere.
Exploring the farm is a delightful experience in itself. You can wander through fragrant vineyards or take a leisurely stroll around the olive groves. If you’re interested in learning more about local wine production, you can even join a wine tasting session. Plus, the farm has its own restaurant where you can savor delicious meals made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Berluda Farmhouse and Cottages provides an idyllic setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful getaway or a chance to reconnect with nature, this charming retreat has everything you need.
Contact: Call 0442728518 or visit berluda.co.za for more information.
Hi there! I’m excited to tell you about Berluda, a truly unique place in the Schoemanshoek Valley. This family estate is not your typical farm – it’s an ostrich farm! And let me tell you, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience.
When you stay at Berluda, you have a range of accommodation options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for luxury or a cozy cottage, Berluda has got you covered. They even have a pet-friendly cottage! The family cottages are especially great because they’re close to the swimming pool. You can kick back and relax on the lovely stoeps, complete with a braai area. And there are two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom – perfect for families.
Now, let’s talk about breakfast. At Berluda, they take breakfast to the next level. They serve scrambled eggs made from ostrich eggs! How cool is that? But that’s not all. You have the option to self-cater for dinner or you can book a table in their dining room. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on their three-course Karoo meal or a delicious braai.
Aside from the amazing accommodations and dining options, Berluda also offers fascinating farm tours. You’ll get a chance to visit the hatchery and learn all about the inner workings of an ostrich farm. Did you know that you can stand on an ostrich egg? It’s an incredible experience that you can only have at Berluda.
And here’s a little tip from me: if you’re looking for some serious cuteness, make sure to add a Meerkat Encounter to your itinerary. Those little meerkats are absolutely adorable!
So, if you’re ready for a unique and unforgettable experience, book your stay at Berluda today. You won’t be disappointed!
Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome glamping experience I had at AfriCamps Klein Karoo. It was truly unforgettable!
6. AfriCamps Klein Karoo
Contact: Tel 0631704222, africamps.com
When I arrived in the early evening, I was greeted with a breathtaking snow-capped mountain view. As I settled into my tent, I couldn’t help but notice the playful impala and springbok bouncing around just a few meters away from me. It was such a magical sight!
But don’t think for a second that this was your ordinary camping trip. No way! AfriCamps Klein Karoo takes camping to a whole new level with their glamping experience. And let me tell you, I’m forever grateful for the air conditioning unit that doubled as a heater. The nights got pretty cold!
Speaking of fire, they’ve got you covered with both an indoor fireplace and an outdoor braai. I had a blast starting up the fires with their nifty little firewood blocks and firelighters. It was like a game of Jenga, but with fire!
The kitchen in each unit was a real gem. It had everything I could possibly need, from spices like salt and pepper to a well-stocked tea and coffee selection. And the best part? They even had a fridge and a microwave! It was like having a tiny home away from home.
The sleeping arrangements were perfect too. Each unit had a cozy double bed and a bunk bed on the other side, so there was plenty of space for everyone. The top bunk on the bunk bed was high enough that I didn’t have to worry about bonking my head. And there were even long tables both inside and outside for meals and gatherings.
Out of all the tents, number 8 was definitely my favorite. It was right on the dam wall, even though the dam was almost empty due to the drought. But you know what? That just added to the whole Karoo experience! I loved every moment.
And let me tell you, AfriCamps Klein Karoo is not just about the tents. They have a swimming pool and play area for kids near the reception. It’s a fantastic family-friendly destination. Plus, you can even book a guided tour of the ostrich farm, visit the adorable meerkats, or enjoy a breathtaking sunset drive. There’s so much to do!
If you’re looking for an unforgettable glamping adventure, look no further than AfriCamps Klein Karoo. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Prince Albert
Have you ever heard of Prince Albert? It’s not officially part of Route 62, but you might find yourself visiting this charming little town when coming from Oudtshoorn. There are a couple of ways to get here: you can take the Meeringsport Pass or the Swartberg Pass. It’s a great place for a day trip, or if you’re on your way back to Cape Town on the N1, it’s a convenient stopover.
1. The Swartberg Hotel
If you’re looking for a place to stay, check out The Swartberg Hotel. You can contact them by phone at 0235411332 or visit their website at swartberghotel.co.za.
This historical hotel has expanded its offerings over the years, and now it has more than just a place to stay. You’ll be delighted to discover a coffee shop, a ladies bar, a restaurant, and even a gin bar! It’s like a whole world of enjoyment within these walls. The coffee shop is a great spot to start your day with a delicious breakfast or enjoy a tasty lunch. They have a variety of options, including vegetarian dishes for those who prefer them. For a truly special dining experience, the Victoria Dining Room is the place to go. Imagine dining by candlelight, creating a romantic ambiance that enhances every bite of your meal. And if you visit on a Sunday, you can indulge in their famous Sunday roast.
Now, let’s talk about the gin bar, shall we? It’s called The Green Prince Bar, and it’s a haven for gin lovers. They offer an impressive selection of local gins for you to try. You can even do a tasting to discover your new favorite flavor. But if you already have a go-to gin, you can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy it. Oh, and here’s something unique: they have a G&T keg, allowing you to pour your own gin and tonic just like you would from a beer tap. How cool is that?
Now, I must tell you about their mouthwatering food. If you’re in the mood for a good meal, you have to try their kudu burger. It comes with a creamy mushroom sauce that adds an extra layer of deliciousness. And let’s not forget about the perfectly cooked chips that complete the meal. Trust me, it’s a combination that will leave you satisfied and craving more. Whether you’re with your family or traveling solo, they have excellent accommodation options to suit your needs. If you’re looking for a cozy and spacious place, their rondavel chalets are perfect for families. And if you’re traveling alone, their single rooms offer comfort and privacy.
2. The Showroom Theatre
Contact: For any inquiries, you can reach me at Tel 0828043364 or visit our website showroomtheatre.co.za.
When you’re strolling along the main road, it’s impossible to overlook the stunning art deco building that plays host to movie nights, live music, and hilarious standup comedies. The moment you step inside, you’ll be transported into a world of grandeur, adorned with elegant chandeliers and plush, red carpeting. With a seating capacity of up to 140 people, there’s ample space for everyone. And don’t miss the upcoming performances by renowned artists like Gerald Clark and the incomparable Pieter Dirk-Uys.
3. Immerse yourself in art
When you’re in Prince Albert, you have plenty of options to satisfy your inner art enthusiast. Among the many art galleries, two stand out to me: The Prince Albert Gallery and the work of photographer Stephan Jaggy. Stephen’s gallery, Café Photo Albert, is conveniently located along the main road. His collection of landscapes and Karoo scenes is truly awe-inspiring. On the other hand, The Prince Albert Art Gallery houses a diverse range of artwork, including paintings and ceramic pieces. Once inside, prepare to lose track of time as you immerse yourself in the world of art.
4. Karoo Donkey Sanctuary
Nothing beats the joy of hugging or tickling a rescued donkey, especially when they have adorable floppy ears like the ones at Karoo Donkey Sanctuary! This incredible sanctuary made headlines when they saved 236 donkeys and 30 horses from being slaughtered at the Hartswater auction in January 2017. Now, it’s known as the largest donkey rescue center and sanctuary in Africa. You can visit the sanctuary by appointment and take a tour to meet not only the donkeys but also pigs, geese, ostriches, and Nguni cows. You’ll learn about donkeys, snuggle with them, and feel their warm nuzzles. Trust me, it’ll be the best R100 you’ll ever spend!
5. Vrisch Gewagt Olive Farm
I must say, out of all the places I’ve traveled to, Vrisch Gewagt Olive Farm is truly remarkable. The beauty of the Klein Karoo seeps in through the windows and skylights, and even the shower doors open to the breathtaking fynbos. You can literally breathe, sleep, and live the Karoo experience here! It’s so quiet that you can almost hear the fynbos stretching towards the sun. For the ultimate experience, sleep with the shutters open and wake up to the sight of springboks right outside your door. Every little detail is taken care of, from the lavender flowers adorning your bed to the complimentary bottle of wine, olive oil, and jar of olives. They provide you with plenty of Nespresso capsules, farm-fresh milk and eggs, and even restock the woodpile. Each cottage has its own unique theme –The Library Cottage filled with books, Hannes Cottage for lovers, and The Artist River Cottage to awaken your inner artist. If you’re traveling with a larger group, you can book The Manor House or Paradys House, both offering luxurious furnishings and traditional Karoo stoeps to relax on all day long. With sprawling dams and swimming pools, you might feel a bit disoriented at first, but trust me, you won’t want to leave. And the best part? You’re welcome to bring your furry friends along!
Finally, when you travel back to Cape Town along the N1 road, make sure you take a break and visit the charming town of Matjiesfontein!
