Route 62: Ladismith and Calitzdorp

Hey there! Ever wondered what lies beyond the main roads of Ladismith and Calitzdorp? Trust me, you’re in for a real surprise!

Most folks just drive through Ladismith and Calitzdorp, stopping for gas and moving on. But if you’re up for an adventure, there’s so much more to these towns than meets the eye. Here’s a bunch of awesome things you can do if you decide to stick around and explore:

Ladismith

Ladismith, a farming town established in 1852, is famous for the legendary Towerkop. Legend has it that a furious witch flew over the mountain and struck its peak with her wand, causing it to split. Pretty wild, huh?! Well, if you want to experience Ladismith in all its glory, here are 12 awesome things you can do:

1. The House of Allsorts

If you’re interested in collector’s items or antiques, you should definitely check out the new House of Allsorts. It’s filled with treasures from the past, and each room is packed with a variety of trinkets. From the kitchen to the bathroom, you’ll find something unique and special. The owner, Dee Cristofoli, has a knack for finding exactly what you’re looking for, whether it’s a rare salt cellar or a vintage chamberpot. And if there’s something specific you have in mind, Dee will find it in a snap. Plus, everything in the shop is up for negotiation and for sale. Oh, and don’t forget to try the locally-made Aloe Jam – it’s a delicious treat that you won’t find anywhere else!

2. Gert’s Junk Stall

If you’re in the mood for some quirky treasures, Gert’s Junk Stall is the place to go. Gert has a passion for all things odd and interesting, and her stall reflects that. From old-fashioned knick-knacks to vintage clothing, you never know what you’ll find. It’s like stepping into a time capsule! Gert is always adding new items to her collection, so you’ll have a fresh selection to browse through. And if you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon a hidden gem that’s worth a fortune. So take a stroll through Gert’s Junk Stall and see what catches your eye!

Step right next door to The House of Allsorts and you’ll discover a hidden gem known as Oom Gert’s shop. With 91 years under his belt, it’s safe to say that most of the items you’ll find in his store are older than time itself! From commemorative coins to stamp collections, and paraffin lamps to garden tools, Oom Gert’s shop is a treasure trove of ancient artifacts.

But the real adventure begins when you take a leisurely stroll down Memory Lane. This charming path will lead you to a yard filled with relics from days gone by. Picture this – old farm implements, vibrant shop signs, and a delightful mishmash of upcycled odds and ends. It’s a sight that will captivate your imagination!

3. Parmalat Cheese Factory

Contact: Give them a call at Tel 0285511030

I was really excited to try Ladismith cheeses when I visited Ladismith. However, it turns out that while you can buy Ladismith Cheese and butter from different places, like the petrol station, they don’t offer official tastings. If you’re interested in doing a cheese tasting, you can visit the Parmalat shop and try their cheeses for free. They also have a wide range of Parmalat dairy products available, from their popular Mature Gouda to Aylesbury ice cream, all at affordable prices. It’s no wonder that they sell about three tonnes of cheese every month! You can take a break in their beautiful garden and even try their thick fruit yoghurt shakes, which are like a whole meal in themselves. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to give them a few days’ notice if you want to do a cheese tasting.

4. Explore the Architecture on a Walking Tour

Ladismith is known for its unique architectural style called the Ladismith Style, which is a simplified version of the Georgian style. There are some amazing old buildings in town that have been restored and are now National Monuments. You’ll also find many stunning churches. The Tourism Bureau is located in the Neo-Gothic Otto Hager Church, which was built in 1874. The Lutheran Church, constructed in 1856, has Bible texts beautifully painted on its walls. The old Synagogue is a rare example of Lithuanian style in South Africa, and it was once a place where Jewish children were taught Hebrew in the afternoons. Another interesting sight is the feather boom houses, with the famous ‘Volstruis Paleis’ (Ostrich Palace) being the most well-known. If you want to experience staying in a National Monument from the ostrich era, Albert Manor is a beautifully restored guesthouse that was built in 1892 for an ostrich baron. The house still features the original wallpaper and handmade glass windows imported from Holland, showcasing the attention to detail and craftsmanship of the time.

5. Mymering Wine Estate

Contact: Tel 0285511548, mymering.com

Mymering is a working farm located in the beautiful Dwarsrivier Valley. Their state-of-the-art boutique cellar produces the finest Hillock Wines, and they offer a unique opportunity to see the wine-making process up close. You can even indulge in a delightful dinner with a wine-pairing. The menu changes with the seasons, and you have the option to enjoy a two-course meal without wine pairing, or treat yourself to a four-course feast accompanied by carefully selected wines.

When I visited, I had the pleasure of savoring their mouthwatering beef brisket with creamy carrot mash. And let me tell you, their vanilla pannacotta was simply out of this world! I must say, it was the best pannacotta I had ever tasted.

If you have a taste for luxury, you’ll be delighted to know that Mymering Wine Estate also offers luxurious suites for a longer stay. From your private jacuzzi deck, you can bask in the breathtaking view of the majestic Towerkop Mountain. It’s truly an experience that you won’t want to miss.

6. Mountain Passes and Mission Stations

Contact: Tel 0722055632

Come on an adventure with me as we explore the wonders of Seweweekspoort Pass, the Hoeko Valley, and the mission stations of Zoar and Amalienstein. We’ll be guided by the knowledgeable Desmond Sauer, who knows this area like the back of his hand. Brace yourself for a bumpy ride along dirt roads as we make our way into Seweweekspoort. Did you know that this pass has an incredible history? It was once used by the Attequa and Inqua people, as well as crafty brandy smugglers in the 18th century. As we navigate through, you’ll be in awe of the stunning rock formations, the lush indigenous plants, and the river crossings that add an extra layer of excitement.

Our journey doesn’t end there. We’ll also visit the charming rural mission towns of Zoar and Amalienstein. In Zoar, we’ll have the privilege of seeing a Lutheran-style church that’s been standing since 1853. What’s even more special is that the church still has its original organ, which is in perfect working order. Can you believe it? I can’t wait to experience the beauty and serenity of this place.

But the real treasure awaits us in Amalienstein. If we’re lucky, we might get a chance to meet Oom Paul, an 85-year-old craftsman who creates stunning dollhouses. What’s remarkable is that he still personally delivers them to outlets in Cape Town. Hearing his stories and witnessing his craftsmanship will truly be a highlight of our adventure.

7. Porcupine Rest Camp and Overlander Bar

If you ever find yourself driving down the beautiful Seweweekspoort Pass from Ladismith to Lainsburg, keep an eye out for a sign that says “Ice cold beer sold here” on the R323. Trust me, it’s worth the stop! The Overlander Bar is the perfect place to relax with a frosty drink and a delicious pizza. As the tunes of Led Zeppelin fill the air, you can challenge the locals to a game of pool. It’s a lively spot with a great atmosphere.

4. Ebenharts Handmade Pipes and Restaurant

Contact: Tel 0442133569, ebenharts.co.za

When I moved to Calitzdorp, I wanted to open a shop in town. But I didn’t just want any shop; I wanted something special, something that would stand out. So, I decided to start with a beautiful patio where people could relax and enjoy a cup of tea. Little did I know that this humble beginning would lead me to where I am today.

Now, you might be wondering what makes my shop different. Well, let me tell you. I specialize in something unique – pipes. Yes, you heard it right. I am one of the few pipe-makers in the country, and the pipes you’ll find in my shop are truly one-of-a-kind.

I have been crafting pipes since 1993, and I learned from the best – Willie Mattner. If you were a pipe smoker in South Africa between the sixties and eighties, you would definitely know who he was. His handmade briar pipes were highly sought after, and he passed on his knowledge and skills to me.

When it comes to materials, I don’t compromise. I use only the finest local woods that have been tried and tested over the years. Additionally, I import the best Briar available to ensure the highest quality of my pipes. And here’s the best part – all my pipes come with a lifetime guarantee. That’s how confident I am in their craftsmanship.

But it’s not just about the pipes; it’s about sharing my passion with you. When you visit my shop, you’ll find a wide variety of pipes to choose from, and I’ll be more than happy to guide you in finding the perfect one. It’s not just a purchase; it’s an experience.

Oh, and did I mention I also have a collection of classic cars? They’re definitely worth taking a look at while you’re here. So, come on over, stretch your legs, and breathe in some fresh air. I can’t wait to welcome you to my world of pipes and share the joy of craftsmanship with you.

Step onto their shaded deck and revel in the simple pleasure of a cappuccino or a freshly grilled sandwich.

As I continue along this journey, I’m delighted to discover the incredible talent of artists who have left their mark in this picturesque region. Roger Young and Phyllis Midlane, two remarkable artists, have made their presence known in their coffee shop at Roger’s Kruisrivier Gallery. Not only can you enjoy a refreshing drink and a tasty snack here, but you can also feast your eyes on Roger’s captivating and slightly haunting images of the Karoo.
