I’m going to tell you about the Barberton Greenstone belt. It’s a really cool place where you can find some of the oldest rocks on Earth. They have volcanic and sedimentary rock that’s been around for a super long time.

The Makhonjwa Mountains go from northeast to southwest and they make a shiny backdrop for the town of Barberton. These rocks are really old, about 3.57 billion years old. That’s way older than your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents! They formed when the Earth’s crust started to cool and land started to appear in the oceans. These rocks are so special that they are even a World Heritage Site. There are only 10 World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and Barberton is the newest one.

Hey there! So, check this out: I’m gonna tell you all about this really cool trail called the Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail. It’s a 37km-long trail that starts in Barberton and goes all the way to the Josefsdal/Bulembu border with eSwatini. It’s a part of the Genesis Route in Mpumalanga, which connects Barberton to Badplaas and Low’s Creek.

You know what’s awesome about this trail? It takes you on this amazing journey where you can see the very first signs of life. And get this: you don’t even need fancy equipment or anything. You can just use your own eyes!

Now, here’s the really interesting part: the trail itself is like a time machine. You see, it takes you back in time, way before humans were even around. It’s like you’re discovering the ancient secrets of the Earth!

So, here’s the deal: you have two options. You can do a half-day journey or a full-day journey. That way, you can choose how much time you want to spend exploring and soaking up all the knowledge.

Now, let’s talk about what you’ll actually see along the way. Brace yourself for some mind-blowing stuff! You’ll come across these incredible rock formations that are billions of years old. Yes, you heard me right: billions! And you won’t believe how stunning they are. It’s like stepping into a whole new world.

But wait, there’s more! As you walk along the trail, you’ll also spot these fascinating minerals and fossils. It’s like a treasure hunt, but instead of gold, you’re finding these ancient relics that tell the story of our planet.

I have to warn you though, this trail isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a bit challenging, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring some water to stay hydrated. Trust me, you’ll need it.

The Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail is a 37km-long trail that is a part of the Genesis Route in Mpumalanga.

You can explore the trail on a self-drive adventure and visit 11 geosites along the way. These sites are located at stops and viewpoints that offer stunning panoramic views. To enhance your experience, there are illustrated interpretation panels and displays of labeled rock specimens.

If you really want to immerse yourself in the Geotrail, I recommend joining Tony Ferrar, a knowledgeable wildlife ecologist and private tour guide. He will bring the trail to life and help you understand how it connects people to their environment.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Christoph Heubeck from Germany’s Jena University. He happened to be in town, and he joined us on a day-long excursion along the Geotrail. Together, Tony and Professor Heubeck have created an illustrated guidebook for the Geotrail, which you can get in town before starting your adventure.

Check out this cool rock I found! It’s called banded iron formation, and it’s a really special type of rock. It’s made up of different layers, some with iron and some without. Isn’t that amazing?

When I went on a trip, I noticed that the area where this rock is found is really unique. It has a special type of land called Afromontane forest and montane grasslands, which are higher up than savannahs and wetlands. This place is home to so many different types of plants and animals, it’s mind-blowing! There are over 1,500 kinds of plants, more than 350 types of birds, and even three kinds of butterflies that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Talk about rare!

As I continued along the Geotrail, I found myself standing beneath the awe-inspiring Painted Quarry geosite. It was a colossal wall, displaying layers of iron oxide, creating a beautiful ochre color. Our guide’s storytelling whisked me away to a time called the Archaean Eon, which occurred billions of years ago.

During the Archaean Eon, the Earth spun faster, resulting in shorter days. The moon was also closer to our planet, causing higher and more frequent ocean tides. The atmosphere was almost devoid of oxygen, and volcanic eruptions filled the air with their powerful presence. Meanwhile, asteroids streaked across the dimly lit sky, eventually crashing into the iron-rich waters of our ancient oceanic world.

This time in history marked the birth of the Earth’s first continents, which gave rise to shallow-water environments where photosynthetic microbes could thrive. Within these shorelines, where tides and rivers brought nourishment and sunlight provided energy, microorganisms began to flourish and evolution continued to unfold.

As we part ways with Tony, he shares, “I moved here to escape retirement, and I must say, I’ve been quite successful at that.” It’s evident why he chose Barberton as his destination for this new chapter in life. – Iga Motylska

A tent on the wild side
Nestled by the Komati River near Badplaas, you’ll find 14 luxurious tents at Nkomazi Game Reserve. These amazing tents are tucked away among the trees, offering a truly wild experience. Last November, this glamping lodge underwent major renovations and made significant improvements to their safari-style tents. And now, they are more comfortable and extravagant than ever!

When I arrived at Nkomazi, the first thing that caught my attention was the private decks with splash pools. They provided the perfect spot to sit back, relax, and enjoy birdwatching along the picturesque banks of the Komati River.

I remember it vividly – the day was scorching hot, but as soon as I stepped into the lodge, I was greeted with a refreshing glass of homemade ice tea. The friendly staff made me feel right at home. The drive from the gate to the lodge, spanning 10 kilometers, had filled me with anticipation. I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in the unbelievably green bushveld that had come to life after the summer rain. It was like stepping into a vibrant paradise.

After settling in, it was time for lunch. The main deck provided a breathtaking view of the swiftly flowing Komati River. As I indulged in the delicious meal, my eyes were drawn to two majestic fish eagles perched on a dead branch. They were on the lookout for their own lunch, just like me. We shared a special moment, appreciating the beauty of nature.

Feeling satiated and at peace, I decided to take a leisurely stroll down to my tent. The tranquility of the surroundings beckoned me to take a snooze before the afternoon game drive. It was the perfect way to recharge and prepare for the adventures that awaited me.

Now, I must admit, I’m not really a geology enthusiast, but Nkomazi has something for everyone. If you’re more into wildlife, you’ll be thrilled to know that the reserve is home to over 300 bird species. You can also join guided walks to learn about the different plants and animals that inhabit this incredible place.

For those who enjoy fishing, there’s catch-and-release fly fishing available. The crystal-clear rivers provide the perfect setting for a peaceful day by the water, trying to catch some fish and reconnecting with nature.

If you’re interested in history, Nkomazi has something to offer too. You can take tours of old San paintings and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the area. It’s a fascinating journey through time, discovering the stories and traditions of the past.

Of course, one of the highlights of my visit was the chance to see big game. Our drives through the reserve were filled with excitement as we spotted impala, blesbok, and springbok grazing together on Nkomazi’s open plains. It felt like a true safari experience!

So, if you’re looking for a place that offers a unique blend of geology, wildlife, fishing, and history, look no further than Nkomazi. This hidden gem has it all, allowing you to reconnect with nature and create memories that will last a lifetime.

After my exciting morning drive, I headed back to camp and treated myself to a well-deserved back massage at the spa. It was pure bliss, and I lost track of time as the skilled hands worked their magic. I spent a delightful 45 minutes in a state of complete relaxation.

Once the massage was over, my stomach growled with hunger. The thought of lunch on the dining deck made my mouth water. The menu at Nkomazi is a culinary masterpiece created by the talented Chef Tafireyi Nyoka. He prides himself on serving food that is both simple and delicious.

If you’re watching your waistline, Nkomazi is not the place for you. This is a place where indulgence is encouraged, and there’s no such thing as a one-course meal. The portions are generous, and the flavors are out of this world. Prepare to be amazed.

Barberton

Barberton is located about 350km away from Joburg. To reach Barberton, you can take the N4, R541, and R38 routes. These roads will lead you straight to your destination.

Nkomazi

Nkomazi, on the other hand, is about 310km away from Joburg. You can take the N4, R33, and R38 routes to reach Badplaas. From there, take a short drive on the R541 to reach the Nkomazi gate. Once you’re at the gate, it’s just a 10km drive through the reserve to reach the lodge. Please note that a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle is necessary for this drive. If you’re not in a suitable car, you can park your vehicle under a carport and we’ll transfer you to the lodge.
