The Swartland is famous for its award-winning wines and delicious olives, and the route offers an opportunity to sample the best of what the region has to offer. But it’s not just about the food and drink. The route also showcases the natural beauty and rich history of the area.

And the olive groves were equally impressive. The gnarled trees stood proudly against the backdrop of the Swartland’s golden hills, their branches heavy with the promise of a bountiful harvest.
But it wasn’t just the scenery that captivated me. Along the route, I discovered charming little towns and welcoming farm stalls, each offering their own unique products and experiences. From wine tastings to olive oil pairings, there was something for everyone.

Back in November, I had an incredible opportunity to go on a road trip with a group of wine enthusiasts and travel writers. Our destination was the Swartland region in the Western Cape. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes that vary from the hilly Paardeberg in the south to the tranquil Berg River in the north.
Riebeek Kasteel, a beautiful town in the Swartland region. Take a look at the picture above. It’s a proud and pretty place. The Swartland Wine Route came to life in 1986, with the goal of showcasing the talents of the producers in this vast area. Today, you’ll find a wide range of wineries and olive producers making their mark both locally and internationally. Some of them have been around for a long time, earning numerous prestigious awards. Others are fresh and independent, but their incredible old vines make them stand out.
Our mini weekend road trip through the Swartland Wine & Olive Route was amazing. We couldn’t visit all 27 wineries, but thanks to the producers, we still got a taste of their offerings. We based ourselves in the charming town of Riebeek Kasteel and explored the area near Malmesbury. And of course, we couldn’t miss the Swartland Producers Party on Short Street (just off Main). It was a blast!
Royal Hotel
I started my journey along the wine and olive route at the beautiful Royal Hotel on Main Street. It may not be the oldest hotel, but it has a charming and luxurious old-world feel. The cozy country furnishings add warmth and richness to the atmosphere. We didn’t want to miss out on the stunning views from the upper pool deck, but we opted to enjoy coffee, tea, and freshly baked scones on the verandah outside. From there, we could quietly observe the bustling activity on the town’s main street. For more information, visit royalinriebeek.com or call +27224481378.
Now, let’s talk about the Olive Boutique…
Hey, have you ever been to Org de Rac Organic Wines? It’s this place where Frank keeps our glasses full while we try out some amazing extra-virgin olive oils with a tasty spread. Seriously, it’s a fantastic experience! Just imagine sipping on those delicious olive oils and learning all about them.
Our first stop on the tour was the Olive Boutique, and let me tell you, it was incredible. Derek van der Riet and Susan Aird, the owners, gave us a real treat. They taught us all about olive oil and let us taste three different oils of varying intensities – frantoio, frantoio/leccino (medium), and coratina. It was like a crash course in olive oil education!
And here’s the best part. Susan poured each of us a measure of oil into a shot-glass-sized cup. We held the cups in our hands, one hand covering the opening, and the other warming the oil. The heat released the natural fragrance of the oil and it was just heaven. I swear, I could smell the flavors even before taking a sip. It was an incredible sensory experience.
If you’re as intrigued as I was, you should definitely check out their website, olive-boutique.co.za. Or, better yet, give them a call at +27224481368. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this extraordinary olive oil adventure!
As I sat down to enjoy a hearty lunch of cold meats and delicious farm breads, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the amazing wine pairings that awaited me. To kickstart our Swartland celebration, we were treated to some bubbles from a renowned winery called Org de Rac Organic Wines in Piketberg. And to make it even more special, the cellarmaster himself, Frank Meaker, came over to pour us a glass of their delightful 2016 Cuveé La Verne MCC Brut that was both fruity and crisp. If you want to know more about their wines, you can visit their website at orgderac.co.za or give them a call at +27221250269.
Discovering Het Vlock Casteel
When I stumbled upon Het Vlock Casteel, I couldn’t resist exploring its charm. This place, a mix of a farm and a stunning wedding venue, immediately transported me to the grandeur of a Mediterranean mansion. The picturesque views were simply breathtaking.
As I learned more about Het Vlock Casteel, I discovered that they don’t just have a beautiful setting; they also produce a variety of fruits, including grapes for their own wines. But their real specialty lies in olives. Walking through their shop, I was amazed to find over 250 different olive products. From exquisite extra-virgin olive oils (EVOO) to tantalizing tapenades and even body products, they had it all.
If you’re curious to see what Het Vlock Casteel has to offer, I encourage you to visit their website at hetvlockcasteel.co.za. And if you prefer speaking to someone directly, you can always give them a call at +27224481488.

My Experience at Lammershoek Winery
Aprilskloof, Malmesbury
Hey there! So, I recently had the chance to visit Lammershoek Winery in Aprilskloof, Malmesbury. Let me tell you all about my amazing experience!
First of all, the setting was absolutely stunning. As soon as I arrived, I was blown away by the picturesque landscape surrounding the winery. The vineyards stretched out as far as the eye could see, creating a sense of calm and tranquility.
Once inside, I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff who made me feel right at home. They were incredibly knowledgeable about all things wine-related and were more than happy to answer any questions I had. It was clear that they had a true passion for what they do.
The tour of the winery was a real eye-opener for me. I got to see firsthand the intricate process of making wine, from the harvesting of the grapes to the bottling of the finished product. It was fascinating to learn about the different techniques used and how they impact the flavors of the wine.
Of course, no winery visit would be complete without a tasting. And let me tell you, the wines at Lammershoek did not disappoint. I was able to sample a variety of their wines, each one more delicious than the last. From bold reds to crisp whites, there was something for every palate.
But it wasn’t just the wine that was impressive – the food pairings were out of this world. The winery takes great pride in creating unique and flavorful dishes that perfectly complement their wines. It was an explosion of flavors that left me wanting more.
Before I left, I couldn’t resist picking up a few bottles to take home with me. The thought of being able to enjoy these amazing wines whenever I wanted was too good to pass up. Plus, they make the perfect gift for any wine lover.
All in all, my experience at Lammershoek Winery was absolutely incredible. From the breathtaking location to the knowledgeable staff and, of course, the delicious wines, it was an experience I won’t soon forget. If you’re looking for a winery to visit, I highly recommend checking out Lammershoek. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Last month, I had the amazing opportunity to explore the beautiful Lammershoek Winery located in the Aprilskloof Valley near Malmesbury. I was thrilled to find out that this winery is connected to Sadie Family Wines and even has one of the German owners as none other than the famous footballer Franz Beckenbauer!
If you’re a football fan like me, you can’t miss Lammershoek’s Libero No. 5, crafted by Franz Beckenbauer himself. It’s a true testament to his skills both on and off the field.
During my visit, I also had the chance to try out their Innocent range, which offers excellent blends at affordable prices. I highly recommend exploring this range, as well as their Terravinum Reserve ranges.
One wine that really caught my attention was the ‘Die Orange 2017’ from their Mysteries range. It has a unique flavor profile that might take some getting used to, but it’s absolutely delightful to sip on. The warm, spicier depth of flavor is perfect for those chilly days when you want something to warm you up.
Aside from the incredible wines, I was lucky enough to meet the visionary winemaker Eben Sadie himself during my visit. To top it all off, I got to spend time with his adorable dog Hachiko. It truly was an unforgettable experience.
If you’re interested in learning more about Lammershoek Winery, I encourage you to visit their website at lammershoek.co.za or give them a call at +27224822835. Trust me, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss!
Gabrielle Jacobs brings you stunning images from the private cellar of Babylon’s Peak, located between Malmesbury and Paarl.
Check out this amazing place called Babylon’s Peak! It’s located in the Paardeberg Mountains and has stunning grounds. The cellar is privately owned and named after the peak on the farm, known as Babylonstoren. I had the privilege of visiting with a group of wine enthusiasts, and let me tell you, the views from the vineyards were absolutely breathtaking!
Stephan Basson, a fourth-generation farmer and winemaker, was our guide on this adventure. He took us up to some of the highest vineyards in the Swartland region, which sit at an impressive 700 meters above sea level. It was an experience like no other.
Now, let me tell you about the Basson family at Babylon’s Peak. They have an incredible tasting room that you absolutely have to check out. And guess what? They even have a taxidermied Cape leopard on display! This leopard was actually found higher up on the slopes of the estate, where we also spotted a small herd of eland. It was quite the sight!

Swartland Producers Party
Hey, I was lucky enough to be in town when the Rugby World Cup Final was happening. Can you believe it? The best spot to watch the game was at the Swartland Producers Party in Short Street. It was amazing! And to make it even better, I was enjoying a glass of Kloovenburg’s smooth red wine called Eight Feet 2017. Did you know that Kloovenburg is owned by Pieter-Steph du Toit’s family? Yeah, he’s a Springbok! It was so cool to be in Riebeek Kasteel, his hometown, on that day. The atmosphere was incredible!
When I attended the Swartland Producers Party in Short Street, Riebeek Kasteel, it was a truly memorable experience. The air was filled with excitement as Captain Kolisi raised the Webb Ellis Cup, and the whole street erupted with cheers and tears. The sound of people singing the anthem “Nkosi Sikelel’iAfrika” echoed through the air, creating an emotional atmosphere.
Amidst all the celebration, I found myself drawn to the wine barrel that showcased the impressive range of Dragonridge Organic Wines from the Paardeberg. It felt like the perfect moment to indulge in some bubbles, and I couldn’t resist lifting a glass of Dragonridge Supernova MCC. The wine was exquisite, and it added to the already elevated spirits of the crowd.
