I have always had a passion for road trips. Since I was in college, my wife Erin and I would embrace any chance to set off on an adventure, not knowing where we would end up or where we would stay. Even our longest trips, spanning 25 days, couldn’t quench our thirst for exploring South Africa.

When the lockdown came, Erin and I had plenty of time to dream about our future road trips. That’s when we came up with a brilliant idea: building and living in a camper van permanently. Luckily, we both run a graphic design agency called Dorky Hero Creative Agency, which allows us to work remotely from anywhere in the country.

In November 2021, we set off on our journey with our two kids, Aimée (7) and Taylor (4), ready to spend a whole year on the road. Unfortunately, we had to cut our trip short when my father unexpectedly passed away at the end of 2022, forcing us to return home.

So, we made a decision to upgrade our van, and after spending four months at our home base, we hit the road again. Our destination? Vanfest 2023 in Chintsa, Eastern Cape, situated along the Wild Coast.

We’ve discovered that planning can sometimes be more stressful than it’s worth. There are times when we arrive at a place we thought we’d adore and stay for a while, only to end up leaving after just one or two nights. And then, on other occasions, we find ourselves staying for weeks in places we initially didn’t plan to stay for long. It’s taught us the importance of adaptability, which brings us incredible freedom.

My job is to shoot, edit, and create videos. I hope that through these videos, people can connect with the beautiful and funny aspects of our life on the road. Life is unpredictable, and I believe it’s crucial for people to engage with that unpredictability.

Now, let me tell you about my top things to do and see between the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

1. Buccaneers on the Beach, Chintsa

Have you ever heard of this place? It’s a popular destination for backpackers, but not many people know that it also has a campsite. The campsite has a rustic charm and a serene atmosphere. It’s located near the beach and a lagoon, which makes it a perfect spot to relax and explore the beautiful Wild Coast. The best part is that you might even have the place all to yourself.

2. Spending the night at Kenton-on-Sea or Canon Rocks

Let’s embark on an exciting adventure and explore the vast spaces and sand dunes of The Dias Cross Memorial in Boknesstrand, Eastern Cape. This place is like no other, with its untouched terrain that resembles the surface of the moon. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking to experience the beauty of sand dunes without committing to a long hike like the Alexandria multi-day trek.

No road trip in this area would be complete without a stop at the legendary Nanaga Farm Stall on your way to the Garden Route National Park. Indulge in their mouthwatering pies that are simply irresistible. Afterward, make your way to the renowned Storms River Mouth. Visit during the quieter off-season to truly appreciate the tranquility. Walk across the suspension bridge and let the mesmerizing sound of crashing waves against the rocks on the pebble beach captivate your senses. For an even more breathtaking view, hike up the steep opposite side and take in the magnificent scenery.

Don’t overlook the Kaaimans River. It’s tucked away between Wilderness and George, and it’s worth a visit. Kaaimans Rustic Views may not be perfect, but it’s a beautiful place to find peace and tranquility. Take a kayak out on the river at sunrise and discover a secret waterfall.

Go for a hike on the Half Collared Kingfisher Trail or explore the abandoned railway while making your way to the more adventurous Brown-hooded Kingfisher Trail.

5. Visit Redberry Farm in George and pick your own strawberries…
