Road trip from Cape Town to Parys and back via Karoo and Garden Route

December rolled around, and I had one goal in mind: avoid the chaos of Cape Town before Christmas. My plan was simple: escape to the peaceful riverbanks of Parys, Free State. However, there was one little wrinkle in my plan – Luna, my energetic and lovable border collie mix (she’s a rescue, so her breed is a mystery). Needless to say, this meant careful planning was essential. No spontaneous flights this time. I had to map out our journey, making sure we had regular rest stops and pet-friendly places to stay along the way.

Allow me to share how we successfully accomplished our adventure:

When I set out on my journey alone in my trusty Ford Figo, I decided to stick to the main roads. The first leg of my trip took me from Cape Town to Hanover via the N1.

Leg 1: Cape Town to Hanover via N1

Distance: 705km

Time traveled: 9 hours, including two stops for coffee and one stop for lunch

Stay over:

Highlight: The Three Sisters hills near Victoria West were a beautiful sight to behold. As I drove, I couldn’t help but admire the stunning landscape. During the journey, I found solace at the Travalia farm stall located conveniently next to the road. It provided a much-needed break for both me and my co-pilot. We had the opportunity to stretch our legs on their lush green lawn, rejuvenating us for the remainder of our trip.

Are you ready for the next leg of my journey? I’ll be taking you from Hanover to Parys via the N1. This stretch covers a distance of 607km and took me around 8 hours to complete, factoring in two coffee stops and one lunch break.

When it came to finding a place to stay over, I had a few options to choose from. But let me tell you, Parys stole my heart! This little town has a charm that keeps on growing. I spent my days there browsing through antique stores and getting lost in the world of second-hand books. It was pure bliss.

Oh, boy! Let me tell you about this awesome adventure I went on. Picture this: the Vaal River in the summertime. It’s the perfect place to relax and chill. Trust me, you’ll love it!

Leg 3: Parys to Graaff Reinet via N1 and N9

This leg of the trip was a long one, about 730 kilometers. Can you believe it?! I was on the road for a whole 9 hours. But don’t worry, I made time for two coffee breaks and a lunch stop. Gotta keep fuelin’ up, am I right?

Now, let me tell you about where I stayed. It was just perfect. I had such a great time! But first, let me tell you about the highlight of this leg: Karooroos Farmstall. This place is the bomb! They’ve got the tastiest jams, pickled foods, and dips and sauces you won’t find anywhere else. I couldn’t resist getting some to take home with me.

Leg 4: Graff Reinet to Plettenberg Bay via N9 and N2

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The shortest route would’ve been to go through Uniondale, but I heard the pass there is in pretty bad condition. And with all the heavy rain we’ve been having lately, well, it’s best to play it safe. So, I decided to take the longer route through George. Safety first, you know?

This leg was about 465 kilometers, and it took me 7 hours to complete. Along the way, I had two coffee breaks, because, hey, a road trip without coffee is like a day without sunshine. And let me tell you, the holiday traffic in Knysna was no joke! It slowed me down a bit, but I made the most of it by enjoying the scenery.
