Have you ever heard of the towns of Ugie and Maclear in the Eastern Cape highlands? They are nestled in a breathtaking landscape, where mighty mountains overlook rivers that flow steadily throughout the year. And to make it even more enticing, there are charming cottages waiting to welcome you for a delightful autumn getaway.
When I think about Ugie and Maclear, what immediately comes to mind are the awe-inspiring mountains that dominate the scenery. These majestic peaks add a sense of grandeur and wonder to the surroundings. And the rivers that wind their way through the valleys only enhance the beauty of these already picturesque towns.
As I explore the area, I can’t help but be captivated by the quaint and cozy cottages that dot the landscape. They offer a sense of comfort and warmth, making them the perfect retreat for an autumn escapade. Imagine waking up to the crisp morning air, surrounded by the tranquility of nature, as you sip your morning coffee on the porch of one of these charming cottages.
Ugie and Maclear truly are a hidden gem in the Eastern Cape highlands. The combination of towering mountains, meandering rivers, and inviting cottages create an idyllic setting for an unforgettable autumn getaway. So, if you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, look no further. Ugie and Maclear welcome you with open arms.
As I drove towards Ugie, it felt like stepping into a scene from Outlander. Not because I spotted any sword-wielding Jamie Fraser lookalikes in kilts, but because the towering green mountains reminded me of the Scottish Highlands. These are the foothills of the Drakensberg, and the mountains here are taller than in most of the Eastern Cape.
I was traveling on the R56 from the Elliot side. On my left, the mountains showcased massive rocks peeking through the vibrant green slopes, resembling the battlements of a castle. Luckily, I made it a point to look up every now and then, or I would have missed the hole at the peak of Gatberg, around 10km before Ugie. According to local legends, this hole (find out more in the “Do This” section) is spacious enough for a pair of oxen to maneuver a wagon.
When I visited Ugie, my first stop was at the Bob Kaschula Tractor Museum. Inside, I found 89 different types of tractors on display. This museum is a collection of the beasts that replaced oxen in agriculture. But here’s the thing: the 89 tractors that I saw were only two-thirds of the total collection. The remaining 45 tractors were kept in a farm shed.
According to Jason Kaschula, this private collection is the largest in all of South Africa. It all started when his grandfather, Bob, began collecting abandoned tractors from the fields. He would fix each one up, and now the oldest tractor in the collection is a 1916 Massey-Harris Wallis.
During my visit, I was lucky to have Charles Coetser as my guide. Charles is incredibly knowledgeable about not only tractors but also the Ugie area. He worked as a town planner in Maclear for 20 years, so he knows his stuff!
When you visit Maclear, you’ll be greeted by a variety of beautiful and diverse waterways. From fast-flowing streams to deep, slow rivers with large pools, this town is a true paradise for trout fishers. (Photo Leonard Flemming)
In this part of the Eastern Cape, Ugie and Maclear are inseparable. The local community treats them as a single entity, sharing a close bond. Charles, the planner responsible for the towns’ infrastructure, understood this connection and took it into consideration when designing their layout. Despite being only 22 kilometers apart, Ugie and Maclear each have their own unique charm.
As you explore both towns, you’ll experience the quintessential atmosphere of the Eastern Cape. The main shopping street is bustling with activity, while the quiet side roads are empty and filled with potholes. The towering spires of the NG Kerks reach for the sky like needles, adding a touch of beauty to the townscape. You’ll also come across a few historic sandstone buildings that stand as remnants of the past.
Let me tell you about the charm of these small towns. What makes them special is the tight-knit community they have and the amazing stories they hold. One of these stories comes from Noël Wagenaar, a resident of Maclear. He shares a tale of a gymkhana event where the winner, all pumped up with excitement, rode his horse right into the pub. Can you imagine that?
Meanwhile, Charles and I decided to have a quiet lunch at The Cock & the Cat, located on the main road of Ugie. We indulged ourselves in delicious wraps and cappuccinos while savoring the relaxed atmosphere. Charles, an avid biker, then shared with me the popularity of this area among adventure bikers. It turns out there are at least seven challenging passes within a 50km radius of Ugie and Maclear. What a dream come true for bikers seeking thrills and adventure!
Oh boy, let me tell you about all the exciting stuff you can do at Lazy 8 farm! They’ve got some awesome 4x4ing and mountain biking opportunities that will really get your adrenaline pumping. (Photo Courtesy Lazy 8)
Now, let me give you a taste of the adventure I had when Charles and his wife Ria took me on a triple-pass journey. We started off from Maclear, driving along the R396. This road is surrounded by beautiful pine trees and connects Maclear with Rhodes village via Pot River and Naudé’s Nek passes.
I was particularly intrigued by a story Noël had told us. Legend has it that there’s a cave near a bend in the Pot River Pass where the original road builder used to live with his family. Can you believe it? I couldn’t resist trying to find that cave and see for myself if it was true.
As I continued on my journey, I came across something truly fascinating: dinosaur footprints in the Molteno Formation outside of Maclear. The detail of these prints, outlined so clearly, was truly captivating.
But that wasn’t the only incredible sight I encountered. I later stopped by a beautiful stream and couldn’t help but notice the vibrant red stars that adorned its banks. These stars, I soon learned, were scarlet river lilies. They were just the beginning of a stunning array of wildflowers that adorned the high-altitude landscape, painting it with hues of pink, red, yellow, and orange.
As I marveled at the flowers, Charles, who has an eye for fishing spots, commented on the “crystal, gin-clear water” of the stream. It was a moment of pure appreciation for the beauty of nature.
Wow, I can’t believe how amazing this place is! Let me tell you all about it. The rivers in this area are absolutely incredible. With an impressive annual rainfall of around 2,000mm, they offer over 1,000km of waters that are perfect for fishing. The best part is that these rivers flow almost all year long, so you can enjoy them whenever you please. And if you’re a fan of rainbow trout, then you’re in luck because these conditions are just right for them to thrive.
But that’s not all. The beauty of this place goes beyond its rivers. The combination of water, mountains, and flowers creates a breathtaking landscape that you won’t find anywhere else. And let’s not forget about the birds! You’ll be surrounded by all kinds of amazing bird species here. During my visit, I had the pleasure of seeing blue cranes and grey crowned cranes with their adorable little chicks. And to top it all off, I even spotted a magnificent Wahlberg’s eagle soaring through the sky against a backdrop of fluffy clouds. It was truly a sight to behold.
So, if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience, this is the place to be. With its abundant fishing opportunities, stunning natural beauty, and diverse birdlife, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. Whether you’re an avid angler or simply enjoy the serenity of the great outdoors, you won’t be disappointed. Trust me, this place is a hidden gem.
Imagine this: you’re cruising down Prentjiesberg, one of Ugie’s quaint streets, in a homemade go-cart. The wind rushes through your hair as you navigate the twists and turns, filling the air with laughter and excitement.
But the real adventure begins when you take on Naudé’s Nek Pass. The journey starts off easy, with a gentle slope enticing you forward. But soon enough, the road starts to twist and turn, propelling you upwards at a rapid pace. Before you know it, you’re soaring at 2,500 meters, eye-to-eye with the clouds. The world below unfolds, stretching out as far as the eye can see.
Heading back, we decided to explore Pitseng Pass, a path that winds through untamed wilderness. Along the way, we couldn’t resist making a detour to witness the magnificent Tsitsa Falls. After heavy rains, the waterfall roared with power, captivating our senses. It was a shame I couldn’t visit the dinosaur footprints nearby, submerged in the Little Pot riverbed. Perhaps I’ll return in winter when they are revealed.
Hey there, let me tell you about the amazing adventures you can have at Lazy 8 farm!
So get this, at Lazy 8 farm, you can try out some seriously awesome 4x4ing and mountain biking. It’s bound to get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping!
But wait, there’s more! Let me tell you about this cool lady named Adele Moore. She’s a botanical guide, which means she knows all about plants and flowers. One day, she took me to this spot where we had an amazing view of the farm. We set off on a hunt for wildflowers, and let me tell you, it was like finding hidden treasures!
Adele’s eyes are like magic. She can spot the teeniest, tiniest bursts of color amidst the greenery. And boy, did we find some beauties! We stumbled upon these stunning salmon and Transkei gladioli, and sometimes they were hanging out with these fiery red-hot pokers. It was like a painting come to life!
So, if you’re looking for an adventure that combines excitement and natural beauty, Lazy 8 farm is the place for you. Whether you’re tearing it up on the 4×4 tracks or discovering the wonders of the wildflowers, you’re in for a wild ride!
I was filled with curiosity when I stumbled upon the dinosaur footprints. So, I decided to reach out to the expert who is currently researching them, and the others found near Ugie, to learn more. I had the pleasure of speaking with Associate Professor Emese Bordy from the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Cape Town. She provided invaluable insight into the significance of these footprints.
According to Professor Bordy, these footprints hold immense scientific importance because they are among the oldest ones ever discovered. In fact, they mark the dawn of the dinosaurs themselves. What makes this area truly special is that the footprints are preserved in rocks called the Molteno Formation. These rocks are part of the Stormberg Group and were formed approximately 235 million years ago. This is quite different from other dinosaur footprints, like the ones found in Lesotho, which emerged in younger rocks.
As I walked along the quiet side streets of Ugie, with the picturesque Prentjiesberg in the background, I couldn’t help but notice the homemade go-carts that were generating so much excitement. They seemed to be a source of endless fun.
This made me wonder about the ancient San (Bushmen) people who once called this place home. Did they also experience moments of awe and wonder? They certainly left behind evidence of their existence in the form of paintings and stone tools found in shelters all across the area. I had the opportunity to visit one such shelter at Woodcliffe, where some incredibly well-preserved examples of their art can still be seen today.
Woodcliffe is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, and standing in that shelter, I could understand why. The same themes of mountains and water that surrounded us outside were intensified within the rock walls.
Our hike to the shelter was a journey of its own. We crossed sparkling streams and as we climbed higher, the sound of water became more pronounced, with ribbons of it cascading down crevices in the cliff face. It was a truly mesmerizing sight.
Inside the shelter, the rock surface was densely decorated with paintings. I found myself sitting in silence, taking it all in before carefully examining the intricate details. There were depictions of eland, cheetahs, and even hybrid beings that seemed to be part human and part animal, giving rise to a sense of mystery and wonder.
There’s just something special about this place that has always captivated artists. Even after hundreds of years, the allure remains.
