Like me, an old Matie, you would think that you’ve seen and done it all during your student years. But let me tell you, there’s a whole world out there waiting to be discovered, and I found myself speechless as I cycled through trails I never knew existed.
This town has so much more to offer than meets the eye. Not only is it known for its culinary delights and exceptional wines, but it also caters to the active lifestyle that many of us lead.
Embarking on an E-bike Adventure with Adventure Shop
Located on the charming avenue known as ‘Die Laan’ in Stellenbosch, Adventure Shop, a valued member of Cape Country Routes, offers an exciting opportunity to explore this marvelous town from a different perspective.
One of the thrilling experiences they offer is the E-bike tour to Boschendal Wine Farm. This leisurely breakfast ride spans approximately 20km, taking you through stunning vineyards and picturesque natural landscapes before reaching the elegant Boschendal Wine Estate.
If you think riding 20km is a long distance, don’t worry – it’s much easier than it sounds on an E-Bike. The bicycle’s battery acts like a turbo-boost, giving you an extra push and making you feel like a champion as you effortlessly ride up any hill.
The trail starts next to the Eerste River, revealing hidden gems within the town itself. You’ll ride through a natural track between houses and pass by the campus, the JS Marais Nature Reserve, and Idas Valley before experiencing your first taste of mountain biking.
As you take an unknown dirt road, the scenery gradually transitions into a lush forest. Riding with the E-Bike means you never have to strain yourself, so you can fully enjoy navigating the twisting path and keeping an eye out for any holes.
Once you’ve enjoyed your adventure on the dusty forest trails, you’ll stumble upon the hidden gem of Idas Valley dam nestled amidst the mountains. This expansive reservoir creates a breathtaking scene, adding to the already mesmerizing beauty that awaits you on this tour.
As I make my way through the valley, I come across Idas Valley dam, hidden away in its tranquil setting. It’s a peaceful oasis, a hidden gem that offers a much-needed respite from the busy world outside.
The journey to reach this hidden spot has not been easy, but the toughest part is now behind me. I find myself on the old Helshoogte Pass, a road that bears the weight of history. As I ascend, I am greeted by towering eucalyptus trees that line the road, casting a welcome shade and adding a touch of whimsy to the scenery.
Although the climb may seem arduous, I hardly notice the effort. And for those seeking a thrilling experience, the stretch of dirt road after Tokara provides the perfect opportunity to pick up speed and feel the rush of adrenaline.
As I continue my journey, I am serenaded by the sounds of gushing streams, a result of the abundant rainfall the region has received. The melody of the water accompanies me as I weave through the fynbos, the vibrant flora of the area. And finally, after a delightful meander, I reach my destination: Boschendal.
As I roll into Boschendal after my E-bike tour, I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction. Exploring the scenic valley and Winelands on this half-day guided tour has been a treat. And if you’re up for a longer adventure, you can also opt for the E-bike tour to Franschhoek. The tours start at 9 am in front of their offices in Stellenbosch, and don’t worry, they include transportation back from the Wine Estate.
Time to Relax and Indulge: Boschendal Farm Estate
After the invigorating morning ride, it’s time to kick back, relax, and enjoy some well-deserved downtime. Boschendal Farm Estate offers the perfect setting for this. The atmosphere here is reminiscent of a quaint village square, with charming tables nestled under the shade of majestic oak trees. Surrounded by old Cape-Dutch style houses, you can’t help but feel the history and charm of the place.
And let’s not forget about their incredible wine range. From the moment you take that first sip of their soothing white wine, you’ll understand why it’s so highly regarded. The flavors are sublime and comforting, allowing you to truly indulge in the moment.
The menu has an abundance of delicious options to satisfy your taste buds. You can start with a mouthwatering cheese platter before moving on to the main course. You’ll find all the classics like lamb shank and steak, but for me, the standout option was the fish of the day, Cape Bream served sashimi style.
In case you’re not familiar with it, the fish goes by the name of pachymetopon blochii but was previously known as hottentotsvis. Since the name change, the fish has become popular and can now be found on the shelves of Woolworth’s. It’s safe to say that this fish has become quite a sensation.
When I think about Boschendal, the first thing that comes to mind is their impressive herd of Black Angus cows. Just picture it: a picturesque farm, with lush green pastures, and these beautiful creatures wandering about. It’s a sight to behold.
But that’s not all. Boschendal offers you the chance to take a piece of their farm home with you. In their farm shop and Butchery, you’ll find a selection of fresh herbs, vibrant vegetables, and juicy fruits straight from their garden. And as if that wasn’t enough, they also have a range of meats from their own livestock. It doesn’t get fresher than that!
Now, when it comes to food, Boschendal truly takes things to the next level. They have not just one, but three incredible dining options that celebrate the abundance found on the farm. Let me tell you about them.
First up, we have The Werf Restaurant. This place is all about bringing the farm to your fork. They source their ingredients locally and seasonally, ensuring that every dish is bursting with flavor and freshness. It’s a dining experience like no other.
If you’re in the mood for something a little more laid-back, the deli is the place to be. They serve up hearty farm meals that will satisfy even the hungriest of appetites. From a farmer’s breakfast that will fuel you for the day, to wood-fired pizzas that will make your taste buds dance, they have it all.
And let’s not forget about the option of having a picnic on Boschendal’s vast lawns. Just imagine lounging in the sunshine, surrounded by the beautiful scenery, and enjoying a delicious meal. It’s the perfect way to spend a summer’s day.
So, whether you’re a food lover, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a unique experience, Boschendal has it all. Pay them a visit and see for yourself what makes this place so special.
