How much would you do to help animals in South Africa? I was one of 44 people who came together on September 17th for an incredible challenge. It was called the Rhino Peak Challenge, and it took place in the Southern Drakensberg. We had to hike and run 21 kilometers, climbing over 1,300 meters along the way.

The reason behind this tough endeavor was important: we wanted to raise money for rhinos, vultures, and cranes.

And the Winners Are…

When I think about the top finishers in any competition, excitement fills the air. Who will come out on top and claim victory? Who will overcome all odds and prove themselves to be the best of the best? It’s a thrilling journey that captivates our attention and keeps us on the edge of our seats until the very end.

But what does it take to be a top finisher? Is it just raw talent and skill, or is there something more that sets these individuals apart from the rest? As I reflect on this question, I realize that there are several key factors that contribute to success in any endeavor.

First and foremost, it’s important to have a strong drive and determination. The top finishers are the ones who don’t give up when faced with obstacles. They have a burning desire to succeed and are willing to put in the hard work and effort required to achieve their goals. It’s this unwavering commitment that sets them apart from those who are easily discouraged and give up at the first sign of difficulty.

Secondly, top finishers possess a growth mindset. They understand that failure is not an endpoint but rather a stepping stone towards success. Instead of being deterred by setbacks, they see them as opportunities for growth and improvement. They embrace challenges and view them as a chance to learn and develop their skills.

Another quality that sets top finishers apart is their ability to stay focused and disciplined. They have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and are able to stay on track even in the face of distractions. They prioritize their goals and make intentional choices that bring them closer to success. This level of self-discipline allows them to consistently take the necessary actions and make the right decisions that lead to the desired outcome.

In addition to these qualities, top finishers also understand the importance of perseverance. They know that success rarely comes overnight and that it often requires time and patience. They are not deterred by slow progress or temporary setbacks. Instead, they stay the course and keep pushing forward, knowing that their efforts will eventually pay off.

Lastly, top finishers are not afraid to seek help and guidance when needed. They understand the value of collaboration and recognize that they can achieve more by working together with others. They surround themselves with a supportive network of mentors, coaches, and teammates who challenge and inspire them to reach new heights.

When you combine all of these qualities together, you get a recipe for success. The top finishers are those who understand that achieving greatness requires more than just skill. It requires a mindset, a commitment, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

So, if you aspire to be a top finisher in whatever you do, remember to stay determined, embrace failure as an opportunity to grow, stay focused and disciplined, persevere through challenges, and seek support when needed. With these qualities, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a true champion.

A wonderful, yet breezy day provided the backdrop for the Challenge. The first person to cross the finish line was Jock Green, an Elite Runner who completed the race in an impressive time of 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 16 seconds. When asked about his experience, he expressed his delight, saying, “It was my first time on the Peak, and it was absolutely beautiful. Despite the strong wind, I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Among the top finishers were Travers Pellew, the sports coordinator, along with two grade 11 students from Treverton College, Jarred van Alphan and Kai Broom. They all performed remarkably well, securing spots in the top five.

When I think about the 2022 Rhino Peak Challenge, I’m in awe of the extraordinary athletes who showed up with fierce determination. But this race isn’t just about seeking personal glory; it’s a battle against extinction itself. Each runner took on the challenge with a noble purpose – to raise funds for the conservation of endangered species. And I’m thrilled to share that this year’s Challenge broke all records, raising over R1.3 million!

Now, let’s dig into where these funds will go. The majority will be distributed among two environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs): the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and Wildlife ACT. These organizations work tirelessly to protect and preserve our precious wildlife. In addition, 10% of the funds will be allocated to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the provincial conservation authority.

I couldn’t help but be inspired by Patrick Rüegg, the Rhino Peak Ambassador who went above and beyond to secure funds. As a long-time supporter of Wildlife ACT, Patrick managed to raise an incredible amount – over R230 000! His dedication is truly commendable.

About the Organizations

Wildlife ACT’s work to protect vultures is part of several important projects – Project Vulture, the Zululand Vulture Project, the Bearded Vulture Recovery Program, and the Maloti-Drakensberg Vulture Project. When I take on the Rhino Peak Challenge, a portion of the money I raise goes towards supporting this crucial conservation work. Some of the funds will also be used to remove the horns from black and white rhinos in protected areas.

Completing the Rhino Peak Challenge is no small task. I want to congratulate all the Ambassadors for their impressive accomplishment and for raising more money than ever before. By participating in this challenge, we are actively contributing to solutions that help protect our wildlife and their habitats.

I’m Tammy Baker, and I have been participating in the Rhino Peak Challenge for the past four years as a Business Development Officer for the EWT. I want to express my gratitude to Spurgeon Flemington from RMA and the Ford Wildlife Foundation for continuously supporting our vital conservation work.

Thanks to the funds raised through the Rhino Peak Challenge, one of the projects that greatly benefits is the African Crane Conservation Programme. This initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of both the environment and the communities in the key crane regions of South Africa, ensuring benefits for both people and biodiversity.
