A Delightful Dining Experience at Rhodes Memorial Restaurant and Tea Garden

When I first stepped foot into the charming Rhodes Memorial Restaurant a few years ago, the rain poured down heavily. Seeking warmth and comfort, my friend and I found solace near the crackling fire, indulging in a flavorful curry accompanied by sips of velvety red wine. The entire experience was a harmonious blend of taste and coziness.

However, as time went on, whispers of a decline in quality reached my ears, leaving me with a slight pang of sadness. The restaurant had once held such promise. But in 2011, something wonderful happened. Bernard and Jessica Lyon took the reins and revitalized the establishment. Naturally, this called for a personal investigation – I had to find out for myself.

One beautiful autumn morning, I had the pleasure of joining a group of close friends for a delightful breakfast gathering. The sun was shining, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere as we made the decision to sit outside under a colorful umbrella. From our table, we could enjoy a breathtaking view of Cape Town, making the experience even more special.

What made this breakfast gathering even better was the fact that we could indulge in a delicious breakfast for only R35, which included a serving of toast. We were so pleased with our meal that we decided to order another round of hot tea and coffee to prolong the enjoyment. As we savored our drinks and chatted, we couldn’t help but appreciate the company, the beautiful weather, and the stunning view before us.

As time passed, the restaurant began to fill up with couples and families who had also discovered the joy of this place. The sounds of children playing in the nearby playground and the sight of dogs being treated to biscuits from a giant jar added to the lively atmosphere.

Eventually, our breakfast meeting came to an end, as lunchtime approached. Eager to stay active after our delicious meal, we decided to take a refreshing walk down the stairs of Rhodes Memorial. The view from the top was breathtaking, and we vowed to make these breakfast gatherings a regular occurrence in the future, as they provided the perfect start to our day.

When I returned for lunch with another friend a few weeks later, it was a chilly winter’s day. Surprisingly, we sat in the exact same spot where I had first visited. The atmosphere was cozy, with a blazing fire and rose petals adorning the table. To combat the cold, there were piles of blankets available. We both decided to try the delightful pea and sausage soup, served with toasted ciabatta and butter. The portions were generous, and the soup was already quite filling. But it was so delicious that I couldn’t bear to leave any behind, so I asked for a takeaway container. My friend jokingly remarked that he’d need a wheelchair to make it back to the car, given how full we were. For our main courses, I opted for a lamb tagine, while my friend went for the ostrich bobotie.

As we walked out of the restaurant, our bellies were full and satisfied. We overheard a woman at the next table raving to her waiter about how amazing the chicken curry was. She said it was the best she had ever tasted, even better than the ones in Durban. It was such a high compliment that it made me curious to try making it at home. A few days later, I bought a jar of Harissa paste and attempted to replicate the flavors of the tagine I had for lunch. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite the same. I guess I’ll just have to go back to the restaurant for another meal. There’s a springbok potjie on the menu that I’m eager to try!

Before my next visit, I’m thinking of going for a walk with my dogs on the mountain. It’ll be a great way to build up an appetite and enjoy the fresh air. Who knows, maybe even my dogs will enjoy their visit and demand their own doggy bag if the dog biscuits are as tasty as the human meals.
