A Personal Journey Through Bo-Kaap Kombuis
Hey there! Let me take you on a little journey through the incredible Bo-Kaap Kombuis. You see, when I was just a kid, I would stroll down August Street in the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Passing by number 7, I’d often hear the yapping of a resident dog as I made my way to soccer practice. Little did I know, that very house would one day become a wonderful restaurant and guesthouse, owned by none other than Yusuf Larrney himself.
Bo-Kaap Kombuis actually began as a coffee shop. My wife, Nazli, had this idea of creating a cozy space where people could relax with a warm cup of coffee and enjoy a slice of cake from our lovely Italian cake stand. It was a hit for a while, but then folks started saying they couldn’t eat cake all day long! So, we decided to expand the menu and started serving delicious toasted sandwiches and tramezzinis. And then, one day, we added Butter Chicken to the mix. And well, the rest is history! Our little coffee shop transformed into a bustling restaurant loved by our neighbors, friends, and visitors from near and far for the past seven years.
As I entered Yusuf and Nazli’s humble abode, I was greeted with warm, genuine smiles. Nazli’s caring and nurturing nature shone through, as she shared her infectious laughter. Meanwhile, Yusuf, with his calm demeanor, made it his mission to ensure the utmost comfort and happiness of his guests. Being a lifelong resident of this vibrant neighborhood, he possessed a wealth of knowledge about its rich history. He kindly offered to sit down and enlighten me about it, while his wife tended to her culinary creations in the kitchen.
The walls of their charming home were adorned with cherished family photos and captivating artworks by local talents. This thoughtful display added an undeniable homely touch, making me feel as if I were enjoying a delightful meal in the warm company of dear friends or beloved family members. And in essence, that’s precisely what it felt like, as this delightful establishment was a labor of love managed by their entire family. With mom expertly commanding the kitchen, dad captivating us with his stories, and their son graciously serving our needs, it truly was a familial affair.
The view from the restaurant overlooking the city and Table Mountain is truly breathtaking. And to make sure everyone gets to enjoy it, Yusuf, the creative mind behind the restaurant, carefully designed the space, even handcrafting the tables and cupboards.
While Nazli prepared a mouth-watering platter of savory starters for us – samosas, spring rolls, and dalchies – Yusuf helped us decide on our main course. He has a unique approach: he insists that all guests place their orders together so that the dishes are ready at the same time, ensuring everyone can enjoy the meal together.
Yusuf shared his secret with us – every dish on the menu has been tested and approved by his closest friends and family. They give their honest feedback, making sure only the best culinary creations make it onto the menu. It’s quite a high standard to meet, considering how critical loved ones can be!
After much pondering, we finally settled on three delectable dishes: the creamy Butter Chicken, the flavorful Butterbean Curry with lamb, and their specialty, the mouthwatering Denningvleis – a traditional Malay dish. Every bite was a burst of flavor, but the Denningvleis stole the show. It consisted of tender marinated lamb served with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, rice, and salad. I regret not asking for the recipe; it’s likely a well-guarded secret!
To conclude our meal, we indulged in the Traditional Bo-Kaap koesisters, a delightful treat with a unique twist compared to the typical Afrikaans-style koeksisters. It’s like a donut with a sprinkle of coconut, perfectly complementing a cup of tea. Yusuf shared that Malay households traditionally serve koesisters for Sunday breakfast, and we couldn’t help but invite ourselves to join them!
I bet if we showed up on a Sunday for some yummy koesiesters and tea, the Larrney family would welcome us with open arms and a big hug, just like when we said goodbye. We left as friends with full bellies, and I think we’ll be back at the Bo-Kaap Kombuis before you know it, asking for “tea and koesiesters, please.”
