In the heart of the Overberg in the Western Cape, there are beautiful white sand dunes and long, untouched beaches for you to explore.
Some friends and I decided to take a road trip along the N2, passing through Heidelberg, Swellendam, and Riversdale. We were pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon a little town called Witsand. It’s located right at the mouth of the Breede River and is said to be one of the few remaining hidden gems along the South African coast. The main attraction in Witsand is the magnificent Breede River, which gets its name from the Afrikaans word for “wide.” It is one of the largest and most easily navigable rivers in South Africa, and it flows into the Breede River estuary.
Witsand truly is a paradise for nature lovers. The town is blessed with breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. The coastline is home to many species of birds, making it a birdwatcher’s dream come true. The beaches are pristine, perfect for long walks or lazy afternoons of sunbathing. And if you enjoy water sports, you’re in luck! The Breede River is ideal for fishing, kayaking, and boating. You can even try your hand at windsurfing or kiteboarding if you’re feeling adventurous.
When it comes to accommodation, Witsand has a range of options to suit every budget and preference. From cozy guesthouses to self-catering apartments and luxury resorts, there’s something for everyone. And don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine. You’ll find cafes and restaurants serving up fresh seafood and traditional South African dishes that will tantalize your taste buds.
So, if you’re looking for a hidden paradise along the South African coast, Witsand is the place to be. It’s a destination that offers natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and a chance to relax and unwind. You won’t be disappointed. Why not pack your bags and start planning your trip today? Witsand is waiting to be explored!
Have you ever played that game where you toss a dart at a map and see where it lands? Well, that’s exactly what we did when planning this trip. We found a simple map online, highlighting coastal places along the N2, and ended up in Witsand. Witsand used to be a bustling town with a thriving port where steamboats would load goods bound for Cape Town. You can still see the remains of these steamships at the well-preserved little harbor.
As we drove around the village with Jacques Spies, a resident of Witsand for about a year now, a stunning white church caught our attention, and we stopped to take some photos. Jacques told us all about the church, which is a famous landmark known as the Barry Memorial Church. It was built back in 1849 and holds a significant place in the town’s history.
Imagine a place where the sky and the water merge into one beautiful blue expanse. It’s a captivating sight that leaves you in awe.
This village is home to just around 320 people, a close-knit community that seeks solace from the chaos of city life. Here, the Breede River takes center stage, attracting fishermen from far and wide. Its reputation as a fishing paradise precedes it, with an abundance of fish species like Spotted grunter, Steenbras, White and Red stumpnose, and Red roman.
To truly appreciate the charm of this village, we decided to take a boat ride. It was the perfect way to soak in the picturesque views of the village. The lagoon, calm and serene, was dotted with boats, each one casting out their fishing nets.
But the beauty of this place doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. The surrounding area boasts 3000 hectares of untouched fynbos. Here, you can encounter rare species like the Cape Mountain zebra and the Cape vulture. With over 260 species of birds, this place is a bird watcher’s paradise. And during whale seasons, you’ll witness the largest concentration of southern right whales swimming along the coastline, a truly magical experience.
Wow, what a breathtaking view! The sun was like a ball of fire in the sky as my friends and I stood on the sand dunes, sipping our sundowners. The drive to Witsand was definitely worth it just to witness this amazing orange sunset.
Once we finished our boat ride, we found ourselves in the midst of the most stunning sand dunes. It was like we had stumbled upon a hidden treasure. We couldn’t take our eyes off the captivating sight of the sun setting over the horizon. The whole weekend was dedicated to relaxation, and Witsand provided us with exactly that.

How do you get there?
Well, lucky for you, it’s just a 300-kilometer drive from Cape Town along the N2. The drive itself is absolutely beautiful, with breathtaking scenery and plenty of spots to take a break and stretch your legs.
What do you need to know?
Just keep in mind that this small village doesn’t have the big shops you might be used to. So, make sure to fill up your tank and stock up on food essentials before you arrive. Better safe than hungry, right?
Now, here’s what you can do:
You should definitely take a boat trip down the Breede River to the bush pubs. It’s a great way to explore the village and enjoy some stunning views from the water. Just make sure the weather is cooperating. You can contact Pili Pili Adventures at 0285371018 to book your boat ride.
Another option is to drive through Witsand village and check out the old steamships and the little harbor. It’s a fascinating sight to see.
If you’re in the mood for shopping, head over to Zigi, a curio shop that sells beautiful clothing. I got a whole outfit there for just R100, and the quality was excellent.
For all you surfers out there, Witsand is a must-visit destination. It’s known for its great kitesurfing spots, and adrenaline junkies will have a blast.
Lastly, don’t miss the opportunity to go whale watching during the whale season, which is from July to November. You can easily spot these magnificent creatures from the shoreline.
