We had just arrived at OR Tambo airport after an exhausting overnight flight from Cape Town. Sitting inside the comfy car, shielded from the scorching heat of Limpopo’s Polokwane district, I felt at ease. However, deep down, doubts started to creep in about choosing Magoebaskloof as the destination for our week-long getaway… We hadn’t even reached the kloof yet, but the landscape surrounding us was already parched and lifeless. The yellowed vegetation, dried out by the relentless sun, stretched as far as the eye could see, and the car’s display indicated a blistering 37°C.
