Anthony, who is also a published author, went around to each candle-lit table, including mine, asking about our journeys and offering advice. While I enjoyed a comforting meal of chicken stew with Tastic rice, I overheard Anthony talking to other guests about the hotel’s impressive book collection. Apparently, there are a staggering 120,000 books here, and that’s only a quarter of Anthony’s entire collection. “I don’t think I’ll ever have enough time to read them all. People just keep giving me more!” he exclaimed.

After dinner, Anthony invited us to join him in the lounge for an evening of captivating lectures. He mentioned that he would usually take us on a town tour, but unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time. So, we sat down at tables illuminated by warm paraffin lamps, and Anthony began by informing us that we were currently seated on the stoep of a trading store that was built in 1873. As he spoke, shadows danced on the ceilings, adding an air of mystery to his stories. He went on to explain that the trading store had later been converted into a hotel, catering to travelers moving between the diamond fields. “You see, the transport riders needed a place to rest and feed their oxen, and Bethulie had lush grass all year round,” Anthony revealed. He then delved into the tale of JB Robinson, describing him as a tall, thin, and serious man, whom the Boers greatly admired. Anthony shared fragments of history from the Boer-Basotho War, the horrors of the Anglo-Boer War, and the tragedy of the concentration camps.
