My Favorite Pub: Pirates Steakhouse and Pub, Cape Town
I have always been a regular at Pirates Steakhouse and Pub, located on Main Road in Plumstead, Cape Town. This place holds a special spot in my heart, as I have spent countless hours there, mostly at the bar during late-night escapades. Surprisingly, it was only recently that I stumbled upon the fact that they also have a restaurant. Suddenly, everything fell into place – those mysterious doors had a purpose! Curious to discover more, I heard whispers from my knowledgeable friends about the amazing food and legendary steaks at this establishment. Many of them raved about the fact that the restaurant stays open until 4 a.m.
Now, let’s talk about my absolute love for a great steak. It sits right at the top of my list of favorite things, and my appetite is unwavering, regardless of the hour. With this in mind, I knew I had to embark on my own gastronomic adventure and experience the magic of Pirates Steakhouse and Pub.
So, it was pretty late when I arrived, around 10 pm. Late for dinner, but not as late as 4 am! The bar area was packed and lively, but I headed straight to the cozy restaurant through the swing doors. The staff was friendly and quickly showed us to our table. Drinks were delivered almost instantly. And to make the evening even better, we had live music by Amelia. She sang great covers of classic songs from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Tina Turner. In fact, one couple enjoyed it so much that they even had a dance after their meal. It turns out, Amelia is just one member of the talented entertainment crew. They have someone to entertain you with classic tunes every single night. And if you’re in the mood for some popular rock and pop music, the bar has a DJ spinning tunes from Monday to Sunday.
Now let’s talk about the food. To start, we had the prawn cocktail and Camembert on toast. Both were incredibly delicious and the portion sizes were so generous that they could have easily passed as main dishes. I was already quite full, but there was no way I was leaving without trying one of their steaks. We ordered the Blackbeard’s rump (recommended by a friend) and the Pepper Melt Rump. These steaks came with a generous serving of chips, and we also ordered a side of onion rings. Medium steaks are usually not cooked perfectly, but these were close enough. The knives cut right through the pink centers, and the steaks were incredibly juicy. To his surprise, my friend managed to finish the large Blackbeard’s rump with its bacon, cheddar, and black mushroom sauce. It tasted so good that he didn’t even realize it was adding to his waistline. As for me, I saved some of my equally delicious rump for a treat the next day. We washed down our feast with a Jagermeister (after all, it’s a digestive!), and then we headed back to the bar where we stayed until the early hours of the morning. I had to resist the urge to head back to the restaurant at 3:30 am through those swing doors. But there will definitely be a next time, I know it.
