As I walked up Brodie Link for 30 minutes, I was greeted by a breathtaking view of Pringle Bay. It was a sight to behold, with the image imprinted in my mind like a precious photograph.
I have a story for you I want to share with you the remarkable journey of Morris Rosenblatt, a man who took a leap of faith and moved to Pringle Bay without even seeing it beforehand. He had a plan to stay for only two years, but fate had other ideas, and he ended up staying for a remarkable 22 years.
The twin peaks of Hangklip and Klein Hangklip welcomed me as I arrived in Pringle Bay. They stood tall and strong, like the arms of a monumental armchair, embracing the town with their majestic presence. Nestled between these peaks is a pristine beach that stretches for almost a kilometer, inviting eager visitors to enjoy its sandy shores.
At one end of the beach, close to a beautiful milkwood forest, the golden sands meet the Buffels River. It is said that elusive yet playful otters roam the riverbanks in the early hours of the morning and at dusk, leaving traces of their presence behind. As if that wasn’t enchanting enough, the turquoise sea is inhabited by playful dolphins and majestic whales. Along the shore, oystercatchers find solace and build their nests, while caracals stealthily hunt for dassies on the rocky terrain. It’s truly a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Morris Rosenblatt, who shared his experiences of living in Pringle Bay. He summed it up best when he said, ‘Living in Pringle Bay means living with nature.’ And it’s true. The striking beauty of the surroundings, the vibrant wildlife, and the awe-inspiring views all come together to create a harmonious tapestry of nature’s wonders.
When I first came to Pringle Bay in 1996, there were only 190 people living here. The village was small, with mostly gravel roads and just a handful of houses. It was a quiet and peaceful place back then. But things have changed over the years.
Now, Pringle Bay is a bustling little town with nearly 2000 inhabitants. We’ve grown quite a bit, and not just in population. We now have 10 restaurants, much to my dismay. The village has become more popular and attracts many visitors.
However, despite the growth, Pringle Bay has managed to hold onto its rustic charm. Many of the roads are still gravel, which is just the way we locals like it. We prefer the simplicity and natural feel of the unpaved streets.
In fact, a few years ago, the town even had a vote on whether or not to install street lights. And guess what? The majority voted against it. We wanted to preserve the tranquility and darkness of the night sky, free from artificial lights.
Pringle Bay may have changed and evolved, but it still has that special something that attracted me all those years ago. It’s a place where nature and community come together, where gravel roads and starry nights reign supreme. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
‘You know, this place is filled with fascinating people,’ Morris tells me while sipping on a Windhoek Lager at his restaurant, Miems. ‘We’ve had famous residents like Chris Barnard and Dirk de Villiers. What makes it so captivating is that there are no typical nine-to-five workers. Many locals are involved in the film and advertising industry, using this place as their home base between shoots. There are also writers, artists, and restaurant owners. We refer to them as the driftwood of society. It’s an incredibly laid-back and social place. There’s no set structure, no normalcy. And that’s exactly why we adore it.’
Back in the days before World War II, this section of the South African coastline was extremely difficult to reach from the nearby city. It was a treacherous journey involving a slippery footpath and crossing the Steenbras River. This area was a haven for all sorts of people on the outskirts of society: outlaws, runaway slaves, deserters from ships, and what little remained of the indigenous Khoi tribes. It was like a forgotten relic, holding pieces of a bygone era.
When I think of Pringle Bay beach, the first thing that comes to mind is the beautiful oystercatchers that make it their nesting ground. It’s like a sanctuary for them, with rocks providing them shelter. But the wonders of nature don’t stop there.
There’s something about the nature here that is truly captivating. I’ve even come across leopard footprints right in the heart of town! And tourists from around the globe flock here to catch a glimpse of the Cape rockjumper bird, which can be spotted between Pringle Bay and Rooi Els.
But let’s not forget the baboons – they’re a constant presence in Pringle Bay. In fact, there’s a legendary story that has been passed down through the years. It’s about a woman who was paralyzed from the neck down and used to sit on her deck in a wheelchair. One day, when she was alone, a troop of baboons approached her. She couldn’t move, so she just sat there, frozen. To her surprise, the baboons started to groom her, as if they were taking care of her. And as time went by, they treated her like one of their own.
Animals in this area are not just limited to wildlife. Pringle Bay is also home to its very own sheep. Everyone I meet can’t help but gush about Montana. She was rescued in Swellendam and given to a local teacher who brings her to school every day. They even take her for walks on the beach, where she prances happily. “She’s the happiest sheep I’ve ever seen,” one local tells me. “She literally jumps for joy when she runs onto the beach.”
But that’s not all – there are also alpacas. Arthur Rae, a retired US Army helicopter pilot, purchased the open plot next to his property to keep it as a green zone. To control the growth of vegetation, Arthur and his wife, Christine, decided to get three alpacas. Little did they know, this simple decision inadvertently became one of Pringle Bay’s only tourist attractions.
“When it comes to finding fun activities, there are so many great hikes to choose from. You’ve got Pringle Peak and Brodie Link, but the absolute best one is up Hangklip. Let me tell you, during whale season, it’s like a whole new world up there. You can spot pods of majestic whales swimming in the vast ocean. Now, if you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, head over to the slipway beyond Hangklip Hotel. There’s a delightful path that takes you past the lighthouse and leads to the beautiful Moonlight Bay. Trust me, you won’t find many people there, so it’s the perfect spot to take a refreshing swim… completely natural!” shares Morris enthusiastically.
The Hangklip Lighthouse has been standing tall at Kleinbaai since it was constructed in 1960. This impressive structure has been guiding sailors and ship captains through the treacherous waters for many years.
As I stand here, gazing up at the towering lighthouse, I can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship and dedication that went into its creation. It is a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of safety and progress.
The main purpose of the Hangklip Lighthouse is to provide a guiding light for ships, warning them of the dangerous rocks and reefs in the area. Its powerful beam reaches far out into the ocean, cutting through the darkness like a sword. It serves as a beacon of hope, offering a sense of security and guidance to those navigating the unforgiving waters.
But the importance of the lighthouse goes beyond its practical function. It stands as a symbol of resilience and endurance, reminding us of the strength and determination of the human spirit. Throughout its years of service, the lighthouse has weathered storms and witnessed countless ships sail by, each with its own story and destination.
I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder as I think about all the lives that have been touched by this majestic structure. Sailors, fishermen, and even ordinary tourists like myself have all benefited from its presence and guidance.
So next time you find yourself near Kleinbaai, take a moment to appreciate the Hangklip Lighthouse. Stand in its shadow and let its history and significance wash over you. You may just find yourself inspired by the stories it holds and the lives it has touched. It is a true testament to the power of human ingenuity and the timeless pursuit of progress.
As I drove to Hangklip Hotel that evening, I couldn’t help but be struck by its impressive location. Nestled just below the towering cliffs of the distinctive rock, it exuded an aura of mystery. Known for its wild parties and live music on weekends, it was a place that seemed to captivate everyone who visited.
Earlier, Morris had shared an interesting theory with me. With his background in engineering and geology, he believed that the energy radiating from the rocks at Hangklip had a strange effect on people. It was a thought-provoking idea, and I couldn’t help but wonder if there was truth to it. After all, the hotel itself had a storied past, with tales of hauntings and unexplained phenomena. The building had once been home to British servicewomen, operating a top-secret radar station during World War II. Even now, remnants of the station could still be seen.
When I arrived at the bar, I had the opportunity to meet the owner, A. Having owned the hotel for two decades, he had recently made the move from London to this small village. What drew him to this place was the incredible sense of community. It was a community where everyone looked out for one another, where a bag of frozen chips could be borrowed from any restaurant and promptly replaced the next day. The village had a tight-knit bond, evident in their WhatsApp group, where residents offered help and support at any hour of the day or night.
The community also came together for various conservation projects. There was a group dedicated to removing invasive plants once a month, ensuring the native vegetation could thrive. Regular beach clean-ups were a common occurrence, with everyone doing their part to protect the beautiful coastline. And most recently, the village had taken on the challenge of eliminating single-use plastics. From biodegradable straws to eco-friendly packaging, even the local fish-and-chips shop was playing its part in creating a more sustainable environment.
Imagine this: right next to my house, Arthur Rae tends to his alpacas. It’s a lovely sight to see, witnessing the care and love he puts into feeding these gentle creatures. I can’t help but admire his dedication.
Speaking with Harriet Joao, a member of the festival committee, she shares with me the importance of the land we find ourselves in. We are nestled within the Kogelberg biosphere, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of fynbos. Not only do we have the privilege of a pristine river and estuary, but we also have a stunning beach at our doorstep. It’s truly a remarkable place, and we are committed to preserving it for future generations. That’s why we took on this endeavor.
Our aim is not only to protect the environment, but also to promote sustainability. We want to ensure that our actions have a positive impact, which is why we have a strong focus on ocean conservation. It’s our way of showing love and care for the blue expanse that stretches out before us. That’s why our hashtag is #thinkingblue. It’s a simple phrase that carries a powerful message.
Let me tell you about an amazing eco-school called Pringle House. It’s been around for 10 years and was created as part of a program by the Wildlife & Environmental Society. This program helps students learn about the environment in their classrooms. But here’s the cool part – at Pringle House, they don’t just learn about the environment in separate lessons. They bring it into all their teaching, so they can learn about it in a practical way.
Heather Miller, the head of the school, says that the goal is to let kids learn about the environment and sustainable living in a hands-on way. And it’s really working! In the past two years, the number of students at Pringle House has doubled. It seems like more and more people are starting to appreciate the importance of living in harmony with nature.
But what does all this mean for you and me? It means the water is nice and clear, the beach is absolutely beautiful, and the areas where the oystercatchers nest are well protected. People who don’t know each other will wave to you, porcupines will come and dig up the gardens without any fences, and you might even see a sheep having a great time on the sand, just like you as you walk on a beach that is almost completely empty.

I’m Lezette van Jaarsveld, a retired PR officer.
Walking with my dogs in the hills around town is my absolute favorite thing to do. I do it twice a day, every day. The hiking trails here are also top-notch, with Brodie Link and Hangklip being the absolute best.
I’m Lauren Cornell, a freelance photographer.
When I’m in town, I love going surfing on the main beach. If the waves aren’t working, I opt for a paddle up the Buffels River. It’s a great way to keep active and enjoy the beauty of the area.
I’m Morne Lloyd, a restaurant owner.
While the main beach is always a good choice for a walk, my personal preference is Moonlight Bay. It’s incredibly beautiful, secluded, and wonderfully quiet.
