Philadelphia: A Hidden Gem Just Outside Cape Town
Have you ever heard of Philadelphia in South Africa? It’s a charming little town that is often overlooked. I happened upon this hidden gem during a leisurely drive on a sunny Sunday. But when I mentioned it to my friends in Cape Town, I was met with confusion. It seemed that Philadelphia was suffering from something of an identity crisis.
Some of my Capetonian colleagues had never even heard of Philadelphia. Others mistakenly assumed it was an informal settlement. And a few thought I was talking about Philadelphia in the United States. It was clear that this lesser-known Philadelphia in the southern hemisphere deserved some recognition.
You know what? I’ve found this hidden gem called Philadelphia, and it’s just a short drive north of Cape Town. It’s such a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a peaceful main street with two cozy cafes and a handful of art studios. And let me tell you, there’s this incredible restaurant housed in a restored mill. You won’t find a more charming spot to unwind for the weekend.
Back in the 1860s, some smart farmers decided they didn’t want to travel long distances to go to church. So, they founded this historic little town. And believe it or not, Philadelphia has managed to keep its character all these years. They’ve turned many of the old buildings into restaurants and small shops. For instance, the old post office is now a charming spot called Stroep Sit Kafee. And the general store? It’s now Magic Minerals. And of course, the old mill is home to the amazing de Malle Meul restaurant. You’ll also find some lovely boutiques along the main road, selling unique clothing, crafts, and decor.
Entering the main street, my eyes were drawn to the captivating promise of acquiring a unique and exquisite crystal specimen. It was at that moment that I found myself standing outside the enchanting Magic Minerals shop. This hidden gem boasts a truly remarkable collection of minerals, crystals, and gemstones sourced from various corners of southern Africa, showcasing the mesmerizing emerald-green dioptase alongside other magnificent specimens from around the globe.
Yet, the allure of this establishment extends far beyond the geological enthusiasts. Anyone with an appreciation for captivating objets d’art can revel in the splendor of the jewelry, gifts, and decor that grace the premises. Moreover, the hospitable and knowledgeable proprietors, accompanied by their delightful feline companion, Orlando, add an extra touch of warmth to the experience, making it an absolute must-visit.
Right across from me, in the old post office building, there’s this awesome place called Stroep Sit Kafee. They serve the most delicious breakfast while you get to see the peaceful main street. When it’s chilly in the spring, they light up a warm fire that keeps you cozy. And during the hot summer, they have a cool misting system that refreshes you. Now, let me tell you about the food. They make these incredible jaffles filled with yummy stuff. But my absolute favorite is their French toast with a generous scoop of ice cream on top. It’s simply heavenly!
If you’re craving a hearty meal, look no further than de Malle Meul. This charming restaurant is located in an old flour mill and offers a delightful Sunday buffet. For just R170, you’ll have access to a wide selection of traditional South African dishes and delectable desserts. The buffet runs from noon to 3 pm, but it’s best to make a reservation as it tends to get crowded. As you enter the restaurant, you’ll notice the vibrant and quirky paintings by local artist Pieter van der Westhuizen. They add a unique touch to the cozy lounge area. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the mill’s interior, where you can see the machinery that has been preserved for over 80 years. In addition to serving delicious meals, de Malle Meul is also a popular venue for conferences and weddings. The mill’s upper floor features a charming chapel perfect for hosting special events.
When you need a break from the hustle and bustle, head over to the Pepper Tree Coffee Shop in Philadelphia. It’s a relaxing spot with a unique charm, as it’s located in the old horse stables. Grab a seat in the open courtyard under a shady tree and enjoy your lunch while watching weaver birds take turns splashing in the bird bath. The atmosphere is laid back, making it the perfect place to unwind after a busy week in the city.
While you’re there, be sure to check out the art gallery next door. They showcase beautiful paintings and photographic prints created by local artists. It’s a great opportunity to appreciate and support the talent in our community. And if you’re feeling creative, stop by Philadelphia Pottery nearby. They offer ceramic pottery painting activities, but it’s best to call ahead and make arrangements.
Philadelphia is a small town that offers a delightful weekend getaway. The hospitality of the locals and the laid back atmosphere make it a charming destination. Whether you want to relax, explore the art scene, or try your hand at pottery, this town has something to offer.
