River tubing is a popular activity that offers a unique perspective on the natural beauty of rivers. The feeling of floating downstream, surrounded by lush vegetation and the gentle sound of water, is truly captivating. It’s a chance to unwind and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it’s important to take some precautions. First and foremost, always wear a wetsuit or old shoes that can get wet to protect your feet from sharp rocks or debris. A 2-3mm wetsuit is recommended to keep you warm in the water. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes and a towel to dry off after your adventure.
If you’re planning a full day of tubing, don’t forget to pack a lunch. You can also opt for a riverside braai (barbecue) for an additional fee. Either way, it’s important to stay hydrated and nourished throughout the day.
To ensure a more intimate and peaceful experience, river excursions are limited to 20 people per group, with a minimum of six people. This allows for a more personal and immersive experience with nature.
Tubing is a fantastic activity for people of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just looking to relax and enjoy the scenery, tubing has something to offer everyone. So grab your gear, gather your friends or family, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the water.
In the months of September to December and again from April to June, when the water levels are lower, the Palmiet River offers a fantastic opportunity to float downstream in one-person inflatable tubes known as “gekos”. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy the river, as you recline and drift along the channels, through pools, and over small rapids. If you encounter any dangerous rapids, you’ll have the option to walk.
During your tubing adventure, you’ll be provided with a lifejacket and helmet for safety. It’s advisable to wear a wetsuit to keep warm (you can either bring your own or rent one from Gravity Adventures). Make sure to wear wetsuit booties or sturdy shoes that can get wet. Each excursion is limited to a group of 20 people, with a minimum requirement of six participants, and typically lasts around four hours.
Regardless of which option you choose, you’re guaranteed to have an exhilarating experience on the river.
Useful information:
When you plan your adventure at Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First off, take note of the CapeNature conservation fee. This fee doesn’t come included in the rates and amounts to R60 per adult. However, if you have a Wild Card, you can enter for free.
Now, let’s talk about the river-rafting and tubing activities. River-rafting is available for children aged 12 and older, while tubing is suitable for ages eight and up, depending on their fitness level. Keep in mind that for rafting, each person’s maximum weight can’t exceed 100kg, and it’s important to have a reasonable level of physical fitness to participate.
When it comes to tubing, the maximum weight per person is 95kg. Additionally, you need to be reasonably fit and agile since there will be some rock hopping, scrambling, and swimming involved.
It’s worth noting that all the activities at Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve are water-level dependent. Sometimes, during the in-between seasons, the river might be too low for rafting but too high for safe tubing. In such cases, don’t worry! You can always ask about alternative activities, like kayaking on the estuary.
