Hey there! Have you heard about this awesome café? It’s such a cool and cozy place, like a mix between a conservatory and an antique shop!

Our Local is already a well-known spot on Kloof Street. It used to be a mechanic’s workshop, but now it’s filled with plants, vintage furniture, and even a beautiful fountain that reminds me of Italy. This place has become the go-to spot for brunch, toasties, coffee, and cake. But that’s not all – now they also have a lunch and dinner menu.

Let me tell you, their lunches and dinners are amazing. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, you can enjoy some delicious Mediterranean-inspired dishes. They have options for both meat lovers and vegans, so everyone can find something they love.

The story behind it

Hey there! Let me tell you the story of Our Local. It all started with Michael Carter and Shayne Schutte, two friends who share a passion for good food and hospitality. Shayne, who had been working as a private chef for a long time, was convinced by Michael that they should open a restaurant together. And guess what? In 2019, destiny brought them the perfect opportunity.

Out of the blue, they were offered an old office space. And you know what they did? They seized the moment and opened their restaurant just four weeks later! Can you believe it?

But that’s not all! After surviving all the ups and downs of the pandemic, they decided to expand. They took over the entire space and transformed it into something truly special – Our Local. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s a place that feels like home.

More than a restaurant

Step inside the big yellow doors on Kloof Street and you’ll enter a bright and open space. The interior is filled with tall trees in pots, clusters of collectibles and old books displayed on shelves. Plants are used as dividers on the long central table, adding a touch of greenery to the atmosphere. You’ll also notice price tags on some of the furniture because, in this unique cafe, most of the items are actually for sale!

“I can never predict how many people we can seat,” says Michael, the owner. “There’s always something new happening, with tables being sold and new pieces constantly being sourced. It keeps things exciting around here!”

A taste of the Mediterranean with a warm heart

Shayne and Michael, the owners of the restaurant, both have a deep love for Italy and the Mediterranean way of life, and this passion can be tasted in every dish on the menu. According to Michael, Shayne’s cooking is all about flavor and simplicity. They don’t believe in overcrowding the plate with too many elements. Instead, they focus on creating dishes that taste amazing and remind you of home-cooked meals.

One popular dish on the menu is the Spaghetti Limone. It’s bursting with zesty and refreshing flavors of lemon, garlic, and capers. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even add some smoked trout to take it to the next level. The portion sizes are generous, just like the flavors.

When we visited, the specials board featured a smoky roasted-tomato soup, topped with fresh pea shoots. It was a delightful combination of flavors. They also had a mouthwatering Moroccan chicken dish. The chicken was marinated to perfection, making it tender and juicy. It was then roasted in a rich sauce made with dates, olives, and capers. The dish was served on a bed of creamy potato purée.

When it comes to delicious food options, there’s nothing quite like a mouthwatering burger on a soft brioche bun. It’s a classic choice that never fails to satisfy. Another popular favorite is the fillet and chips, a tasty combination that hits the spot.

If you’re in the mood for something lighter, the brunch menu offers toasties made with croissants and breads from Coimbra bakery. They are the perfect option for a mid-morning treat. And if you have a sweet tooth, you won’t be disappointed with the teatime and dessert selection. Our talented bakers create mouthwatering cakes, brownies, and tiramisu in-house, ensuring that each bite is a delectable delight.

Want to experience a taste of the Mediterranean? Come join me at our local hangout, where you can sip on refreshing Aperol Spritz or Espresso Martini. If you’re in the mood for something classic, we’ve got you covered with a G&T or Old Fashioned. To start the evening off right, we offer delicious snacks like piping-hot lightly battered zucchini sticks, paired with a luscious aioli, and arancini served on our homemade Napolitana sauce.

Here are some important details for you to keep in mind. If you want to host a private event, you can book the entire space on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. For a more intimate gathering, we have a large room separated by glass doors that can be booked for private dinners. We are open from 8 am to 4 pm on Sundays to Wednesdays, and 8 am to 11 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays.
