Discover the New Oudebosch Cabins at Kogelberg Nature Reserve
Last month, I had the chance to explore the brand-new eco-cabins at the stunning Kogelberg Nature Reserve, just a stone’s throw away from Kleinmond. These cabins, which opened for bookings in February 2012, not only prioritize being eco-friendly but also boast an incredible aesthetic appeal. The combination is truly a win-win.
I have built five self-catering units that offer beautiful views of the Hottentots Holland mountain range. These units are connected by wooden walkways and have been constructed using environmentally-friendly materials. I made sure to minimize our impact on the surrounding area. Each cabin has some unique features that make them special. One interesting feature is the planted roofs, which not only provide insulation but also keep the cabins cool during the summer months. Additionally, each cabin has an indoor fireplace for those chilly winter days. To add a touch of creativity, I have used recycled bottles to create chandeliers and lights. The dining table is a simple trestle style, and the bedside tables add character to the rooms. The rooms themselves are modern and classy in their simplicity.
When you stay in one of our cabins, you can comfortably accommodate up to four people. The layout of each cabin is thoughtfully designed to provide convenience and a cozy atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find two bedrooms, each equipped with spacious sliding doors for easy access.
In these bedrooms, you have the option of a double bed or two single beds, allowing you to choose the sleeping arrangement that best suits your needs. Additionally, there is a small shelf area where you can store your personal belongings, keeping your living space tidy and organized.
The cabins are equipped with two bathrooms, which ensure that there is plenty of space for everyone to freshen up. Each bathroom comes complete with a shower, basin, and a unique self-composting toilet. Yes, you read that right – these toilets don’t require flushing! Instead, they use an environmentally friendly composting system to dispose of waste.
Now, let’s talk about the wooden-floored shower. It’s not just a functional addition; it also adds a touch of elegance to the bathroom. The design is cleverly crafted with wooden slats that allow water to flow seamlessly through them. This creates a visually appealing and refreshing shower experience, giving you a sense of being one with nature.
So, if you’re looking for a comfortable and eco-friendly accommodation option for up to four people, our cabins are the perfect choice. Experience the convenience, unique features, and cozy ambiance they offer – book your stay today!
When you step into the cabin, you’ll be greeted by an open lounge, dining room, and kitchenette area. The doors swing open onto a spacious deck, offering a stunning view and letting in a refreshing breeze. If you prefer, some cabins also have a courtyard instead of a deck, giving you an equally delightful outdoor space to enjoy.
In the kitchen area, you’ll find everything you need to prepare a meal. There’s a sink for washing up, a fridge/freezer to keep your ingredients fresh, and a microwave and oven for cooking. If you prefer to cook on a stovetop, you’ll find a gas stove available. Pots and pans, a toaster, kettle, and cutlery and crockery for six guests are provided. And if you have friends or family visiting for the day, day visitors are more than welcome.
In three of the cabins, the lounge, dining area, and kitchen are located in a separate unit. A small courtyard or entertainment area connects this unit to the bedrooms and toilets, which are in a separate building. The other two cabins have all the rooms and areas in the same building, making them especially convenient.
Each cabin boasts its own braai area in the courtyard, perfect for grilling up a tasty meal. And when you’re ready to cool off and take a dip, a walkway leads you to the central eco-pool. This pool doesn’t use any chemicals to keep it clean. Instead, it relies on the power of nature. With a deeper side that reaches 1.8 meters and a shallow section with aquatic plants, the pool is a refreshing oasis that promotes natural cleaning and regeneration.
When I arrived at Central parking, I was immediately struck by the unique design of the reed-and-wood cabins. The mix of gabion and wooden pathways leading to the cabins created a modern and inviting atmosphere. The clean and uncluttered look of the cabins, along with the elegant décor details, such as the beautiful bedside tables, made a lasting impression on me.
Here’s what you should know
This place is unlike any other. You won’t find any TV or cellphone reception here, which means you get to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. It’s a perfect retreat for a peaceful getaway, but I’d suggest leaving the littlest ones at home. The design of the area includes raised decks, glass doors, and unfenced pools, so it might not be the safest environment for young children.
If you’re into outdoor activities, this place has you covered. You can take part in day walks, overnight trails, and even try out the mountain bike route. It’s a great opportunity to explore the natural beauty that surrounds you.
The cabins are relatively new, so the plants haven’t fully grown yet. As a result, the walkways might look a bit bare at the moment. But don’t let that discourage you, because the peace and tranquility here are simply unmatched.
There’s also a small function/conference room with a kitchen and toilets, in case you have any special events or gatherings in mind.
The journey here might be a little longer than anticipated. I was told it’s a 90-kilometer drive, but my odometer read 110 kilometers from the CBD to the entrance of the reserve. So just keep that in mind and plan accordingly.
