Now, let me tell you, this area is something special. It’s got these amazing nature reserves, pristine and untouched. The mountains and open spaces are just breathtaking. Mountain biking and gravel riding are getting bigger and bigger, and people who are into these sports are always looking for cool places to go. They want to have new experiences and find hidden gems off the beaten path. And let me tell you, this new cycling route we’ve got here is something else. It’s just a little over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, and it’s absolutely amazing.
Hey there! I want to tell you about the amazing Piketberg Mountain Gravel-Road Circuit. It’s a super cool route that those of us who love riding on gravel roads and exploring the countryside can enjoy. It’s a great way to get started with cycling in the area. If you’re looking for some adventure, follow me and I’ll show you the way!
This circuit is spread out over four days, covering a total of 285 kilometers. We’ll be gaining 3,900 meters in elevation along the way! But don’t worry, it’s not too difficult. The route is divided into manageable chunks to make it easier for riders like you and me. Now, here’s the best part: on the final day, you have an option to take a shorter route of just 98 kilometers. This means you can complete the entire circuit in just 187 kilometers over a long weekend!
Let’s talk about the route
Our adventure begins in Aurora, a lovely village located about 35 kilometers away from Piketberg. From there, we’ll ride for three days, exploring the beautiful countryside, and finally make our way back to Aurora.
Day 1: Today, I will embark on a 48km journey that follows the scenic southwestern slopes of the Piket-Bo-Berg Mountain. As I make my way through the charming village of Goedverwacht, I can’t help but marvel at the beauty of the surroundings. If I need a break, I have the option to set up camp at Januariesfontein or continue for another 5km to complete the route and stay at one of the fantastic self-catering or B&B accommodations available. For those seeking an extra adventure, Retreat Guest Farm or Highlands Eco Estate offers access to some thrilling singletrack trails too. With so much to explore, this first day promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Day 2: Today, I embark on an exciting journey along the Versveld Pass. As I descend, I am greeted with magnificent views of the Swartland plains stretching towards the Winterhoek Mountains. The beauty of this landscape leaves me in awe. The route then takes a turn north and curves west, leading me to Redelinghuys. It’s amazing how the path twists and turns, all while offering me breathtaking vistas.
After a long day of riding, covering a distance of 79 kilometers, I am eager to find respite at the Affi Plaas Country Bed & Breakfast. The warm and welcoming hospitality, along with a hearty meal, will be just what I need to rejuvenate myself. This stop is not only a chance to rest, but also an opportunity to prepare for the toughest day of the entire journey.
Day 3: Today I have two options for my trip. I can either go straight to Aurora or experience more adventure by exploring the Danielshoogte Private Nature Reserve in the mountains. The second option sounds more thrilling because it involves climbing 1,330 meters in just 58 kilometers. However, it is definitely worth it because the fynbos reserve offers breathtaking views of the Strandveld, St Helena Bay on the West Coast, and even Table Mountain in Cape Town if the weather is clear.
After conquering the challenging route up the Danielshoogte Pass and returning to Aurora, I might consider staying at the Rooi Granaat for the night. A good night’s rest there would surely rejuvenate me enough to take on an extra day of exploration.
Day 4: If you’re up for one more day of adventure, head south to Sauer and take a scenic route through the Bo Berg and along the Kapteinskloof valley. Don’t forget to pass by the breathtaking Banghoek Private Nature Reserve. The last 40 kilometers of this 98-kilometer ride are on smooth asphalt along the R366, so you can speed up and enjoy the thrilling end to your journey in Piketberg.
The Piketberg Mountain Gravel-Road Circuit is a perfect choice for gravel riders who are still gaining experience, as it offers a balanced mix of 40% tarmac and 60% gravel roads.
