Meet Christine Connnor, Owner of Connor’s Public House
Did you know that the word “pub” is actually short for “public house”? It’s not just a regular watering hole; it represents something much more meaningful. Let me take you back to 1998, when Connor’s Public House was born at the Elangeni Hotel on the breathtaking Durban beachfront.
Connor’s came to life through the talent of my husband Gerry, who was the lead singer of the popular 90s band Equinox. He brought the entertainment to the pub, and it quickly became a beloved hotspot. Fast forward to 2014, and the time came for us to find a new location. That’s when we found Mackeurtan Avenue, and it felt like destiny. This neighborhood was flourishing, and Durban North, which used to be just a midpoint between the city and Umhlanga, suddenly became its own destination.
Mackeurtan Avenue has a rhythm of its own, pulsating at a steady 95 beats per minute – the tempo that Durbanites know and love. Although Gerry is no longer with us, our son Daniel has taken over the reins. Together, we work tirelessly every day to preserve Gerry’s incredible legacy. Throughout our travels with the band, we experienced various gigs across the country, but Durban always had a magnetic pull. It’s our home, and we have become an integral part of its fabric.

Hey, I’m an ex-marine engineer who loves building stuff. I’ve been a member of the DSME since 1982, and let me tell you, it’s been a blast! This club is all about creating miniature engineering marvels like steam engines, clocks, and even steam locomotives. It’s been around since 1913, making it one of the oldest clubs of its kind outside the UK. Can you believe that?
But the DSME isn’t just about creating amazing miniatures, it’s also about the awesome people you get to meet. We’re a tight-knit community of model-making enthusiasts who share a passion for all things engineering. More than 50 years ago, some of the members even built a small-scale replica of the first steam locomotive that ran in SA. And get this, they even built a 420-meter raised track to run it on!
If you’re curious to see our creations in action, you’ve got to come to our public “running day” on the second Sunday of every month. We set up our mini railway at 10 Hinton Grove, Virginia Circle, and it’s a blast! You can even host a birthday party here and give your guests a fun train ride experience.
