Antonia Steyn

Hey there! I’m Antonia Steyn, the lead singer, actress, and OG South African superstar, and I’m here to share a bit about myself and my love for Cape Town. So, grab a seat and let’s dive in!

You see, I was born and raised in PE, which is short for Port Elizabeth. Growing up there, I was surrounded by incredible stories that always ignited my imagination. Whether it was tales of the past, stories of the present, or even dreams of the future, I found inspiration in every corner. It’s a feeling that reminds me how lucky I am to be alive and how amazing life can be.

Now, if I had to pick a place to call home anywhere in the world, my heart belongs to South Africa. Yes, we have our fair share of problems, but there’s something magical about this country. And you know what makes it even more special? I know exactly how I can make a difference here. Through the power of storytelling and music, I have the chance to contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our nation. Plus, our young generation fills me with excitement and hope for the future.

Oh, and let’s talk about dream lunch dates for a moment, shall we? If I could choose anyone to dine with, it would be Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, and Abraham Hicks. Can you imagine the incredible stories and wisdom that would flow around that table? Pure magic!

Discovering the Beauty of Cape Town

I absolutely adore living in Cape Town! One of the things that make this city so special is the incredible access to stunning natural landscapes. The best part? It’s right at my fingertips, even though I’m nestled in the heart of the city. Within minutes, I can escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and find myself surrounded by the tranquility of a forest, the grandeur of a mountain, or the vastness of the sea.

When it comes to food, I have a particular fondness for African cuisine. The only downside is that it’s not readily available, given that I don’t live in a township. However, I’ve found a fantastic solution – I’ve started cooking African dishes myself. But for those times when I want to indulge in Xhosa or other traditional African delicacies without lifting a finger, Marco’s African Place is my go-to spot.

As for my favorite beach in Cape Town, hands down, it’s Clifton 4th. This beach holds a special place in my heart because it embraces diversity. People from different backgrounds come together, creating a beautiful tapestry of cultures. Not only that, but Clifton 4th is easily accessible, making it the perfect spot for a quick getaway. Now, I must admit, the water can be a bit chilly, but it’s definitely swimmable – even though my friends might disagree!

When it’s time to unwind and enjoy a drink, my absolute favorite bar in Cape Town is Hanks Old Irish on Bree Street. Stepping inside feels like being transported to a cozy pub in Ireland or New York City. The ambiance is rustic, the atmosphere inviting, and the company always friendly. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a pint or two.

One of my favorite dining experiences in Connecticut recently was at Haiku. My family and I went there to celebrate a special occasion, and we had all of our favorite dishes, like calamari and lamb. We also tried some new dishes, and everything was delicious. The service was top-notch, as always.

When it comes to hiking, I really enjoy the Pipe Track. It’s a relatively easy hike, but it still gets your heart pumping. Plus, the views are absolutely stunning, especially when you’re heading towards Table Mountain.

We had a fantastic weekend getaway at Bosman Family Vineyards in Wellington, just outside of Cape Town. We stayed in the Vineyard Cottage, and it was incredible. I highly recommend it for a relaxing and enjoyable escape.

The best event of the year in CT is when they turn on the holiday lights. Every year, the city puts on a big show, and I’ve had the chance to sing in a couple of them. It’s such a festive and joyful time, and people from all over the city and beyond come out to see it. It’s truly a special experience.

Infecting the City is another event that I absolutely love. It’s a theater event that happens once a year in different locations throughout the city. They bring theater to regular people, right in their everyday spaces. It’s bold and unexpected, and it always leaves a lasting impression.

Going it alone

Hey there! Can I fill you in on the latest excitement? Zolani, the talented artist who fronted Freshlyground for 17 years, just made a big announcement. She’s starting her solo career! And guess what? You have a chance to catch her in action in her very first one-woman show called The One Who Sings. It’s happening at the Baxter Theatre from November 19 to 23, 2019. Now that’s something you wouldn’t want to miss!

In this amazing performance, Zolani will transport you into her world with mesmerizing oral storytelling and her own original music. You’ll be taken on a captivating sonic journey through the eyes of a young girl growing up in a township in the Eastern Cape during the 1980s. And that’s not all! You’ll also experience her perspective as a young adolescent in the early 1990s. It’s going to be a mind-blowing time!
