A family affair

I am the current custodian of Muratie, carrying on the tradition from the Melck family who came before me. As I walk through the cellar, I see the walls adorned with pictures, articles, and maps. Each one tells a story, a glimpse into the past of this remarkable place.

One such tale is of George Paul Canitz, a bohemian artist who once called this place home. His daughter, Alberta Annemarie, was just as extraordinary. Their spirits still linger, their art and memories forever etched into the walls of this cellar.

But the stories go even further back. In fact, they stretch back to the year 1699. Laurens Campher and his wife, Ansela van de Caab, were the ones who planted that magnificent oak tree outside the cellars. They are the founding figures of this farm, and their legacy lives on.

Immersing in the tales

When you step into the tasting room, you’ll find yourself in a unique space. It’s been transformed from four concrete fermentation tanks in the wine cellar. The walls bear the marks of time, with a soft patina of wine and beeswax, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. To add an extra level of coziness, a wood-burning stove crackles in the corner.

On a beautiful day, you have the option to relax on the tasting terrace. Shaded by majestic oak trees, it’s the perfect spot to soak up the sun while enjoying your wine.

As you dive into the experience of tasting our wines, you’ll uncover a tapestry of stories. Each wine is named after a remarkable character from our farm’s rich history. These names add an extra dimension to the tasting, inviting you to discover the personalities behind the bottles.

You have three different options for wine-tasting, each offering a unique journey through our selection. In addition, we also offer a pairing option, for those seeking to enhance their tasting experience.

The Farm Kitchen

Muratie Wine-Tasting on a Historic Stellenbosch Wine Estate

I want to tell you about Muratie, a farm that is famous for its warm hospitality. It all started with Rijk’s mother, Tannie Annatjie, who would cook traditional dishes like lamb offal in the beautiful manor house. Rijk’s wife, Kim, continued the tradition by serving delicious lamb shanks to the farm’s visitors. Today, chef Riaan van Schalkwyk keeps the farm kitchen vibe alive with his simple yet amazing dishes. Picture yourself enjoying a hearty lamb shank, a flavorful mushroom risotto, a rustic burger, or fresh fish with chardonnay cream. These generous portions are served with vegetables grown right on the farm.

Take a stroll around the werf

Muratie is not only about wine; art is an integral part of the estate’s identity. As I stroll through the gardens, I come across sculptures that seem to blend effortlessly with nature’s beauty. Inside the tasting room and restaurant, the walls are adorned with an impressive collection of artwork by George Paul Canitz, the estate’s former owner.

But the art doesn’t stop there. The original farmhouse, dating back to 1685, has been transformed into Mok, an art gallery that showcases the talent of local contemporary artists. As I step inside, I’m greeted by three rooms filled with captivating exhibits that change regularly, allowing me to always discover something new and exciting.

Right next to the farmhouse, there’s a charming barn that houses a unique gem: an extension of Stellenbosch’s famous Oom Samie se Winkel. Here, I can wander through aisles of antiques and vintage treasures, each with its own story to tell. And if that’s not enough, I can also indulge in the extraordinary flavors of 9 Orphans gin distillery. They offer a one-of-a-kind experience with their gins crafted from acorns or prickly pears, giving me a taste adventure like no other.
