Experience the Magic of Full-Moon Rides in Cape Town’s CBD
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to ride your bike under a full moon?
Well, wonder no more because Cape Town’s CBD offers an incredible opportunity to do just that. This unique and enchanting experience will leave you feeling exhilarated and awestruck.
Imagine gliding through the city streets illuminated by the soft glow of the moon. The familiar sights take on a whole new dimension as shadows dance and buildings come alive under the night sky.
Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast or just looking for a new way to explore the city, the full-moon rides will captivate your senses and leave you with unforgettable memories.
But what makes these rides so special?
Firstly, there’s something mysterious and alluring about the moon. It has been a symbol of beauty and wonder for centuries, and its presence adds an element of magic to any experience.
Secondly, riding at night creates a sense of adventure. As the darkness envelops you, your senses sharpen, and you become more attuned to the sounds and smells of the city. It’s as if the night whispers secrets just for you to hear.
Lastly, these rides offer a unique perspective of Cape Town’s CBD. During the day, the city buzzes with activity and energy, but at night, it takes on a quieter, more mysterious ambiance. Buildings that you pass by every day suddenly become landmarks in a nocturnal landscape.
So, how can you join in on the full-moon rides?
The Cape Town Cycling Club organizes these rides once a month, coinciding with the full moon. They welcome cyclists of all skill levels and provide a safe and friendly environment for everyone to enjoy the experience together.
All you need to do is bring your bike, a helmet, and a sense of curiosity. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, explore the city in a unique way, and discover hidden gems along the route.
Are you ready to embark on a memorable adventure? If so, mark your calendar and get ready to pedal under the moonlit sky with the Cape Town Cycling Club. You won’t be disappointed.
Hey there! I have some exciting news for you. Please note that the following information is no longer valid, but stay tuned for updates.
Let’s talk about an awesome activity that took place in Cape Town every month. Are you ready? Okay, here we go!
A while back, a couple of guys named Daniel Graham and Elad Kirshenbaum decided to conduct a social experiment on Twitter. The experiment was known as #moonlightmass, and it was amazing! What happened was, on every full moon, people would gather at the Green Point Circle at 8pm (or 9pm during November to February) to go on a fun bike ride through the city together. It wasn’t just for experienced cyclists – anyone with a bike could join in! Isn’t that cool?
The best part is, #moonlightmass became super popular. More and more people started participating, and before you know it, over 2,000 riders were pedaling their way through Cape Town. However, with such a rapid increase in popularity, things got a bit tricky to manage. Eventually, the last #moonlightmass event took place in 2014, but it sure was an incredible ride while it lasted!
Get ready for Critical Mass
Now, let me give you the lowdown on the route. It’s a great route for the whole family! We start by cruising along the beautiful promenade, then make our way to the Seapoint Pavilion. From there, we head to the Waterfront and then onto the Fan Walk. The more adventurous riders can even take a detour up Long Street before circling back to the Stadium via the Fan Walk.
Oh, and don’t worry about finding a place to park. There’s plenty of free parking around the Green Point Circle and Somerset Road. And if you don’t have a bike, no problem! Just check out the Critical Mass Cape Town Facebook page for a list of rental companies.
Before we hit the road, let’s go over a few important rules. Keeping these in mind will help ensure we all have a safe and enjoyable ride. Here they are:

It’s time to bid farewell to #moonlightmass. After 3.5 years, around 40 rides, and countless challenges and successes, it’s time to say goodbye. The impact of #moonlightmass on non-motorized commuting in Cape Town has been substantial, attracting people from all walks of life to enjoy cycling and explore the city once again.
The Sea Point Promenade is now open to cyclists once more, and this would not have been possible without #moonlightmass and the tremendous support we have received. The cycling community has experienced unprecedented growth, with an abundance of cycling shops and bicycle rental companies. Restaurants, bars, and coffee shops have also reaped the benefits of the thriving micro-economy surrounding #moonlightmass.
Cape Town has seen the emergence of more dedicated cycle lanes, evidence that the city now recognizes the value of non-motorized transportation and is actively striving to foster a larger low-carbon commuting community.
Reflecting on the past few years and the significant achievements of #moonlightmass for the cycling community, we can confidently say that our mission has been accomplished.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering dedication of a select few who truly understood the core value of #moonlightmass and generously contributed their time and energy to keep it going month after month. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Helen Zille, Patricia de Lille, Alan Winde, Beverley Schafer, Jacques Weber, all our volunteer medics, Olympic Cycles, Think Bike SA, PPA, Future Cape Town, and the entire #moonlightmass community.
Thank you all and keep on riding, stay safe, and continue to enjoy the beauty of our incredible city.

Hey Martin!
So here’s the deal: Moonlight Mass doesn’t seem to be putting on the events anymore. Bummer, right? But don’t worry, I got your back. All you gotta do is reach out to them (find their contact details on the right), and they’ll tell you who’s in charge now. Easy peasy. Good luck, my friend!
Cheers,
