Hi there! My name is Anelma le Roux, and I am the proud owner of Mila Restaurant. I’ve always had a passion for creating unique dining experiences, and that’s why I decided to open Mila on the beautiful estate of Doolhof in September 2022.
When I met the owners of Doolhof, they were captivated by my eco-friendly approach and my commitment to serving delectable food. It was a perfect match, and together, we have created a one-of-a-kind dining destination.
Joining me at Mila are the talented chef duo, Jacques and Michelle Fourie. They spent a remarkable decade working together in various London restaurants, including their own Ember Yard, which focused on fire-cooking and smoking. Their expertise in the culinary world is truly outstanding.
What sets us apart at Mila is our dedication to using only the best local ingredients. Jacques and Michelle believe in the power of simple yet outstanding food, made with love. They follow their own taste buds and create a menu that is short, personal, and changes often. Every dish is a burst of delicious flavors.
A Culinary Haven with Sustainable Practices
We indulged in the delightful flavors of fresh mosbolletjies, a type of soft bread roll with a captivating aniseed aroma. To complement this treat, we savored creamy Puglia Cheese burrata atop a bed of vibrant beetroot purée, sprinkled with pine nuts and delicate leaves – a truly luxurious appetizer. For the main course, we were treated to exceptional renditions of beloved classics. First, a succulent rib-eye steak paired with smashed potatoes and a rich merlot jus. Then, an Asian-inspired dish featuring melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with irresistibly crispy skin, accompanied by spiced butternut and pak choi. Each dish, expertly prepared and beautifully presented, left us feeling fully satisfied. Throughout our meal, we couldn’t help but notice the tempting gourmet burgers and the fresh and vibrant summer smoked salmon salad, both beckoning us with their tantalizing flavors. Finally, we ended our meal on a high note with a steaming cup of coffee and an assortment of delectable desserts.
Let me tell you about the amazing desserts on the menu. They’re sweet and delicious! One dessert that really caught my attention is the espresso panna cotta. It’s so creamy and smooth, with a hint of espresso flavor. And the best part is the topping – it’s a combination of crunchy salted-caramel and chocolate crumbs. It adds the perfect amount of texture and sweetness to the dessert.
But that’s not all! The dessert menu also features a different cake every day. When I visited, they had a melktert cheesecake, which was absolutely divine. It was the perfect balance of creamy cheesecake and traditional melktert flavors. It’s definitely a must-try if you’re a fan of South African desserts.
And if you’re a coffee lover like me, you’re in for a treat. The coffee at this place is top-notch. They serve Dukes Blend coffee, which is freshly roasted at Anelma’s Monarch roastery. It’s rich, smooth, and aromatic. In fact, it was so good that I ended up buying a canister of beans to take home with me.

This place has even more to offer. If you’re looking for a refreshing and indulgent treat, I highly recommend trying their affogato. It’s a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso. The combination of cold and hot, sweet and bitter flavors is simply irresistible.

I can’t get enough of Doolhof. It’s one of those places that can hold your attention for ages and it’s tough to tear yourself away from the serene beauty of the mountain valley. Take a leisurely stroll past the horse paddocks and make your way down to the trickling mountain stream. There, you’ll find a captivating brick labyrinth that offers the best views around. If you feel like getting adventurous, follow the river trails through the reeds and forest until you reach a bridge. Swing your feet over the rushing water and let yourself be swept away by the moment. For those looking for a bit more action, there are mountain bike trails and a challenging hike up Groenberg mountain.
Here’s a tip: The restaurant at Doolhof has the full range of their delicious wines available at cellar-door prices. So, you can indulge in some wine-tasting while you enjoy a scrumptious meal.
