Discovering the Marvels of Montagu

Welcome to my adventure through the enchanting town of Montagu! Grab your hat and let’s explore this hidden gem together. As I strolled down the charming streets, I couldn’t help but marvel at the unique blend of history and natural beauty that Montagu offers.

Step Back in Time

Imagine stepping into a time machine and being transported to a bygone era. That’s the feeling you get when you visit Montagu. The historic buildings and architecture whisper stories of the past, making you feel like you’ve been transported to a different time. As you wander through the streets, you’ll encounter beautifully preserved Cape Dutch houses and quaint Victorian cottages, each with its own fascinating tale to tell.

Embrace Nature’s Bounty

Montagu is a nature lover’s paradise. The town is nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, offering breathtaking views and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. You’ll find yourself spoiled for choice with the wide range of activities available, whether it’s hiking through scenic trails, rock climbing, bird watching, or simply soaking in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Taste the Flavors of Montagu

One of the highlights of my trip to Montagu was indulging in the local cuisine. The town’s fertile valleys produce an abundance of fresh fruits, nuts, and wine. Be sure to sample the famous Montagu Muscadel, a sweet wine that is unique to the region. If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll appreciate the farm stalls and markets that offer a variety of delectable treats, from homemade preserves to artisanal cheeses.

Relax and Unwind

Montagu is known for its hot springs, which have been attracting visitors for centuries. Take a dip in the healing waters and let the warmth melt away your stress. There’s something incredibly soothing about immersing yourself in nature’s warm embrace. Whether you choose to soak in a natural rock pool or indulge in a luxurious spa treatment, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling rejuvenated.

The Montagu Magic

Montagu is a place that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. From its rich history to its natural wonders, there’s a sense of magic that permeates through the air. As I bid farewell to this enchanting town, I couldn’t help but feel that a piece of my heart would forever remain in Montagu.

Staying at this amazing place in Montagu was a bit of a dilemma. I was super excited to explore the area, but the accommodation was so incredible that I just wanted to relax and enjoy it. I could spend hours reading by the pool or lounging in the room, feeling like a king in that fancy robe.

However, because I love to discover new things, I managed to tear myself away from the cozy bed with its absurd number of scatter cushions (someone insisted that those cushions were pointless) and ventured out to see what Montagu had to offer.

Well, well, well! Look who we have here – a small-town girl just like me! (Oh, the joys of growing up in the humble town of Kroonstad, Free State, with its coordinates 27.6373° S, 27.2323° E. Go ahead, check it out!) And let me tell you, I felt right at home when I stepped foot into the warm embrace of Monte Vista Boutique Hotel.

Now, let’s talk about Pauline, the lovely hostess. Boy, was I in for a surprise! As it turns out, I could converse in Afrikaans with her, and it instantly made me feel like we were old friends catching up over a cup of steaming hot coffee. Speaking of coffee, picture this – I stroll into the breakfast area, and there she is, ready with an itinerary in hand, orchestrating everything like a maestro. I mean, this woman is no joke! She whipped out her phone and started making calls left and right, organizing visits to various places in town.

But here’s the kicker – after COVID-19 hit, things took a nosedive, and most establishments in town now require appointments for visits. This is where Pauline’s superpowers kick in. She knows every single person in town (I’m not kidding, she’s got their personal cell numbers and all!) and can arrange the most exclusive experiences for you.

After my visit to The Vault Antiques, I decided to check out the weekend village market. And guess who I ran into? That same lady from the antique store! It seems like we couldn’t escape each other. Throughout the weekend, I kept bumping into familiar faces, seeing them multiple times a day. We would warmly greet each other, catching up on all the latest news since our last encounter.

The village market was a treasure trove of delightful treats. There were freshly baked pancakes, cozy knitwear made by hand, and an array of homemade jams and pickled fruit. It was a haven for all things artisanal. But what really caught my eye was the self-proclaimed “local author” selling his books. He had a whole stack of copies of a three-part omnibus that he had personally printed. And guess what it was about? His experiences in the Rhodesian army.

As I walked along, I made my way to Mike’s Love for Ferrari showroom. This place was like a treasure trove filled with Mike’s personal collection of Ferrari model cars, books, and artwork from all over the globe. Mike’s face lit up with pride, and it was clear why. He had amassed over 2,000 model cars and had become an expert on all things related to the renowned Italian car manufacturer. At the showroom, you could immerse yourself in the stunning displays showcasing the grandeur of Ferrari’s luxury cars, their Formula 1 creations, and various other car-related wonders that lay beyond my realm of knowledge.

If you’re a fan of fancy cars, you’ve probably heard of Ferrari. But did you know that Ferrari is not just a car, but a symbol of power, speed, and luxury? It’s true! When I see a Ferrari on the road, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration. It’s like witnessing a work of art in motion.

What makes Ferrari so special? Well, let me tell you. When Enzo Ferrari founded the company in 1939, he had a vision to create the world’s most extraordinary cars. And that’s exactly what he did. Ferrari is renowned for its cutting-edge technology, sleek design, and unrivaled performance. Every detail is meticulously crafted, from the engine to the aerodynamics, to deliver an exhilarating driving experience.

But it’s not just about the cars themselves. Owning a Ferrari is like joining an elite club. It’s a status symbol that demands attention and respect. When you drive a Ferrari, you’re not just driving a car. You’re making a statement about who you are and what you value. It’s a symbol of success, achievement, and passion.

Of course, owning a Ferrari comes with its challenges. It’s not for everyone. You have to be dedicated and willing to invest time and money to maintain and care for your Ferrari. But for those who understand the allure and appreciate the craftsmanship, it’s a price worth paying. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of sitting behind the wheel of a Ferrari, feeling the power under your control.

So, if you’re looking for a car that will turn heads and ignite your sense of adventure, consider a Ferrari. It’s more than just a car – it’s a work of art, a symbol of excellence, and a testament to human ingenuity. So why settle for ordinary when you can have extraordinary? Choose a Ferrari, and experience the thrill of a lifetime.

So there I was, feeling the rumblings of hunger deep in my belly, desperately searching for a place to satisfy my cravings. And just like that, I stumbled upon the Rambling Rose. Let me tell you, friend, this place is something truly special.

First things first, let’s talk about the food. Oh boy, where do I even begin? The dishes here are absolutely scrumptious, bursting with flavors that will make your taste buds dance with joy. And the best part? The sauces and jams that come with each dish are homemade. I mean, can you believe it? You won’t find these mouthwatering creations anywhere else.

But it’s not just the taste that blew me away. It’s the quality of the ingredients. Trust me when I say, everything I had in Montagu was fresh, fresh, fresh. None of that pre-made and frozen stuff here. No, sir. The folks at the Rambling Rose take pride in using locally sourced ingredients and organic suppliers, ensuring that every bite you take is bursting with goodness.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Great food must come with a hefty price tag, right? Wrong! The prices here are incredibly reasonable, especially considering the top-notch quality you’re getting. It’s like they’re giving away happiness at a bargain price!

So, if you’re in Montagu and your stomach starts growling, do yourself a favor and make a beeline for the Rambling Rose. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Your taste buds will thank you, and your belly will be eternally grateful. Go on, treat yourself to an unforgettable dining experience!

When it comes to dinner, I always consider the food scene to be a crucial factor in determining whether a destination is a hit or miss. Thankfully, my experience at Picollo’s Pizzeria was a delightful surprise. This small Italian restaurant may not look like much, but its food is incredibly delicious. As I indulged in my cheesy pizza, I couldn’t help but notice Mike from the Ferrari showroom once again. It was a comforting sight, and it made my evening even more enjoyable.

Embracing the Outdoors

When I’m in town, I love exploring the different stores, browsing through old books, and indulging in delicious food. But that’s not all there is to do here. I believe that to truly experience a place, you have to go outdoors and take in the beauty of nature. So, I made it a point to go on a hike during my visit.

There are four hiking trails in this area, and if you count the romantic ‘Lovers Walk’ along the Keisie River, there’s a total of five trails to choose from. The pamphlets mention it all. Personally, I decided to take on the Badskloof trail. It’s a 5km route that leads to Avalon Springs, a resort known for its breathtaking natural hot springs. Unfortunately, the resort doesn’t allow day visitors at the moment. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying the hike and soaking in the beauty of the surrounding scenery.

As I made my way through the landscape, navigating both muddy areas and breathtaking views of the Langeberg, I had the pleasure of encountering an array of cheerful birds. To my delight, I even caught sight of three duikers playing on a cliff’s edge.

Things to Do as a Tourist

Montagu has all the attractions you’d expect from a charming small town. One of the must-see highlights, according to the locals, is taking a tractor ride on Protea Farm in the KOO valley just outside the town. The town itself offers an abundance of art galleries, shops, museums, and even a golf course. If you venture a bit further, you can indulge in an olive tasting experience at the Olijvenhof Olive Estate or explore the KOO valley on horseback. Another popular activity is taking a relaxing Viljoensdrift River Cruise on the scenic Breede River, which runs between Robertson and Bonnievale.

Options for Accommodation

Monte Vista Boutique Hotel is an amazing place to stay. The rooms are big and beautifully decorated with a modern, Afri-chic style that makes you feel at home. They even put extra little touches in the room to make you feel special. When I arrived, there was a bottle of Van Loveren Pinotage waiting for me, which was a nice surprise. And the view of the mountains behind the hotel is breathtaking.

Did you know that there’s a delightful villa available at this property? It’s perfect if you’re traveling with a big group or your family. Staying here means you get to enjoy your own space while feeling safe and secure, especially during COVID-19. The Airlies section is beautifully decorated in a vintage Victorian style.

One of the things that really stands out about this place is their commitment to the ‘Garden to Table’ concept. During my stay at Monte Vista, I had the pleasure of enjoying eggs that came straight from a nearby farm. And the freshly baked bread from the kitchen was simply heavenly. The hotel owners actually grow their own olives just a short distance away, and they even have a pecan tree right on the property. They grow their own tomatoes and herbs too! It’s incredible to see how much love and care goes into every meal here.

In the dining room and common area, there’s a warm fireplace that keeps us comfortable during mealtimes, especially in the winter months. The honesty bar is stocked with plenty of drinks, just like a typical small town. You simply write down what you’ve had in a book and settle your bill before you leave.

On hot summer days, the pool is a refreshing escape from the heat. And even on a crisp winter morning, if you’re like me and love clear pools, it’s still a magical sight. I won’t lie, though – it was pretty freezing. But the Nespresso machine in my room quickly warmed me up.

When it was time for me to leave and I packed my bags, I realized why I’ll be coming back to Montagu very soon. It’s not just about visiting the place; it’s about visiting the people.
