In the second part of the Mazda Change Your View series, my adventure with Mazda continued as we explored the Eastern Cape in the powerful new BT-50 4×4 doublecab. Our mission was clear – to uncover the extraordinary and the intriguing, all while creating captivating artwork. And let me tell you, we discovered some truly remarkable things along the way.
Stories are everything to me. They are the fuel that keeps my creativity burning bright. I find inspiration in the tales that unfold around me, and it’s through my art that I share these stories with the world. My name is Buntu Fihla, and I’m an artist, photographer, and social commentator based in Gqeberha.
Living in the Eastern Cape, I am surrounded by a rich tapestry of narratives. This region is a treasure trove of stories, waiting to be discovered and shared. I roam the streets, camera in hand, capturing the essence of these tales and translating them into visual art. It’s a form of storytelling that allows me to bring these narratives to life and create a connection with my audience.
I am known as @bief37 in the online world, where I weave my own stories alongside the photographs I capture. Through my Instagram account, I invite others to join me on this journey of discovery and exploration. Together, we can delve into the heart of the Eastern Cape, uncovering the unique stories that shape our lives.
Every photograph I take is a piece of the puzzle, a glimpse into someone’s reality. I strive to capture moments that evoke emotions and spark curiosity. By doing so, I hope to ignite a passion for storytelling in others and encourage them to share their own narratives.
So, if you have a story to tell – whether it’s a personal experience or something you’ve discovered in the Eastern Cape – I invite you to join me. Let’s create art together, and through our stories, let’s paint a vivid picture of life in this remarkable corner of the world. Welcome to my world of stories and inspiration.
‘Growing up in the Eastern Cape, the rich history and culture of the area really inspired my love for art and photography,’ I said.
So, it only seemed fitting that my art journey in the latest BT-50 took me through the hidden backroads of that fascinating province.
Our team set off on our adventure by driving along the N2 and R72 out of Gqeberha, making our way towards the coast. This time of year, you can spot pods of bottlenose dolphins near the shore. We were lucky to see them in great numbers! But this trip wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was also a chance to put the BT-50’s highway capabilities to the test. With its muscular 140kW 3-liter diesel engine, the vehicle performed exceptionally well during long stretches of cruising. The 450Nm of torque came in handy when overtaking slower trucks on the less-traveled R72. And the best part? The engine was sophisticated, quiet, and highly efficient.
I was on my way to Peddie, a town tucked away from the bustling dolphins and untamed shore. My purpose? To reintroduce Buntu to the Fingo Milkwood, an ancient tree that holds great significance for the Xhosa Mfengu clan. It was here, under the sheltering branches, that the destiny of our people was forged, setting in motion a chain of events that would shape our history for years to come.
Every year, I make this pilgrimage to capture the tree’s transformation, a tangible representation of our clan’s evolution over time. The Fingo Milkwood stands as a silent witness, mirroring the changes within our community as it grows and adapts.
In December, when I ventured into the Amathole Mountains, it was storm season in the Eastern Cape. The rain poured down relentlessly, transforming the roads into rivers. It was a good thing I had the BT-50, with its reliable 4×4 capabilities. With a simple switch inside the cab, I could easily activate the desired mode to tackle the treacherous conditions. For the stormy backroads, the High Range 4×4 setting was the perfect choice.
After the rain subsided, the picturesque town of Hogsback came into view. It was a sight to behold, with its stunning waterfalls and enchanting forest roads waiting to be explored. Maneuvering through the muddy terrains was made easier with the help of the Mazda’s Hill Launch Assist and Hill Descent Control. Navigating the mountainside was an exhilarating experience that brought me immense joy.
Did you know that hidden in the remote hills outside Dimbaza is a magnificent architectural marvel? It’s almost as mysterious as the Amathole’s backroads. The Ntaba KaNdoda National Monument is a tribute to Ndoda, an 18th Century Khoi chief who was legendary in the region. This incredible Brutalist memorial, designed in 1981, features an amphitheatre and event venue. If you stand in the middle, you’ll be blown away by the mind-boggling acoustics. It’s a lot of fun!
On a different note, Phakamisa recently received a warm welcome from the team. We finally found a place for Buntu’s art on our colleague and fellow creator Yanga Mgabadeli’s home turf. Buntu’s tag is well-known and instantly recognizable throughout the Eastern Cape. His use of colors is complex and captivating. Buntu is beloved in his hometown, and we all gathered to celebrate, share stories, and reconnect in a safe and joyful atmosphere.
Wow, coming home after a jam-packed schedule was a much-needed opportunity to kick back and revel in Mazda’s amazing luxury. Let me tell you, this truck is a game-changer. It’s the most spacious double cab out there, designed with your comfort in mind—extra elbow and legroom, anyone? And let’s not forget about the sleek style. It’s a head-turner, no doubt about it.
Now, let’s talk about the Infotainment System. Trust me, it’s a total delight. With a generous 9-inch display screen, it’s not only easy on the eyes but also a breeze to navigate. Oh, and the cherry on top? It seamlessly integrates with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, so you can stay connected without breaking a sweat.
Finally back home and wow, the trip really hit me. The sheer magnitude and scope of it all became so clear.
“I can’t believe how amazing it was,” I said to Buntu. “Everything we saw and experienced was mind-blowing. It’s truly extraordinary. But you know what? This is just the beginning. We need to keep that curious spirit alive within us.”
Hey there, my friend! It’s great to have you here, ready to take on the thrilling adventures that await us.
