Masithandane: Building a Better Future with Mosaic Art in Sedgefield
When I recently traveled to Knysna, I had the amazing opportunity to escape the bustling city and immerse myself in the tranquility of Sedgefield, a charming town along the Garden Route.
The road that led me to this picturesque destination was lined with breathtaking mosaics. I discovered that these stunning works of art were created by an organization called Masithandane, which is dedicated to improving the overall well-being of the community.

Let me tell you about Masithandane. They’re a really cool organization in Sedgefield Village that’s been doing some really great stuff to make our town even better. One of their awesome projects is the Mosaic Job Creation Project. This project has been a huge success and has helped make our town even more beautiful.
But the Mosaic Job Creation Project is just the beginning of what Masithandane does. They’re a Public Benefit Organization, which means they’re dedicated to helping underprivileged communities in Sedgefield and the surrounding areas.
Masithandane was started by Otto and Celia Kossar. They had a vision to do something special for God, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing. Their organization, Grace Fellowship, is located right where Smutsville and Sedgefield meet. It’s a reminder that not everyone is as lucky as we are.
As we go about our work each day, something important drives us – the desire to help those who need it most. We are a dedicated team of compassionate individuals who are always there to assist the unskilled, unemployed, sick, elderly, vulnerable, and marginalized members of our community in Smutsville and beyond.
Our commitment reaches far beyond just Smutsville and Sizamile. We extend our support to Fairview, Karatara, Elandskraal, Barrington, and Farleigh, ensuring that even those in the surrounding areas have access to the assistance they need.
We understand the significance of taking care of the whole person, which is why we provide a range of community-based health services. Our goal is to ensure that everyone who requires essential healthcare has access to it. Additionally, we focus on nurturing the potential of young individuals through our child and youth care programs. In doing so, we equip them with the necessary life skills and support they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
At the Masithandane early childhood development center, I get to experience a safe and exciting place where I can learn and grow. They have all sorts of activities that help me develop and prepare for my future success. It’s amazing!
There’s something really special happening in Sedgefield. They launched a project called the Interactive Mosaic Community Project back in 2008. The goal is to bring art tourism to our town while also bringing our community together. They’ve created beautiful mosaics all over town that showcase the talents of our local artists. Masithandane is leading the way in making this project a reality, working closely with Visit Knysna, the Knysna Municipality, and local businesses who believe in our community’s growth.
The Interactive Mosaic Community Project is more than just art and skills development. When I join this community, I receive training in practical mosaic work. Then, I attend business training from reputable institutions like the CCDI and Tsiba College. This way, I learn the skills I need for a job or to start my own business. And you know what? This helps create more jobs and boosts the economy in our community!
But that’s not all. This project also cares about the environment. They believe in being responsible and recycling waste products. It’s like helping the community and the planet at the same time.
Speaking of helping, Masithandane is committed to empowering learners and creating job opportunities. They believe in supporting community development and making a real impact. By working together, we can create a brighter and more inclusive future for everyone.
