Living the digital nomad dream in Portugal
Hey there! Looking to live life on your own terms and work remotely while exploring new places? Well, Portugal might just be the place for you. Let me tell you why.
First of all, Portugal offers an amazing blend of rich history and breathtaking natural beauty. From the charm of medieval castles to the stunning coastline, this country has something for everyone. And don’t even get me started on the delicious food and wine!
But what really sets Portugal apart for digital nomads like you and me is its modern infrastructure and affordable cost of living. With reliable internet and plenty of coworking spaces popping up across the country, you’ll have no trouble staying connected and being productive.
Speaking of productivity, did you know that Portugal has a fantastic work-life balance? The Portuguese truly understand the importance of taking breaks and enjoying life. So while you’re here, take some time to explore the cobblestone streets, soak up the sun at the beach, or savor a leisurely lunch with friends.
Another great thing about Portugal is that English is widely spoken, especially in major cities like Lisbon and Porto. So if you don’t speak Portuguese, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to navigate your way around and make connections with locals.
Now, let’s talk about visas. As a citizen of many countries, including the United States, Canada, and most EU countries, you can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days without a visa. And if you decide you want to stay longer, there are options available for obtaining residency.
When it comes to finding accommodation, Portugal offers a range of options to suit every budget. From affordable apartments in the city center to charming villas in the countryside, you’ll find plenty of choices. Just be sure to do your research and book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
So there you have it. Portugal is a digital nomad’s paradise, offering a mix of culture, natural beauty, and modern amenities. Whether you’re looking to escape the corporate grind or simply want a change of scenery, this country has it all. So pack your bags, grab your laptop, and get ready to live the digital nomad dream in Portugal!
So, let me break it down for you – what is this digital nomad dream we’re talking about? I used to imagine it as working from a laptop, chilling in a hammock next to a pool, and only putting in a few hours of work each day (or, as Tim Ferriss would have you believe, just four hours a week). Perhaps you know some folks who actually live this way. Although, I wouldn’t blame you if you got tired of their constant social media updates saying ‘Office for the day’ and hit that unfollow button.
So, here’s the thing. I’ve got these dreams, you know? Dreams of a life that’s just…perfect. Picture this: the Wi-Fi is strong, the mojitos are flowing, and every day is a new adventure, whether it’s a refreshing skinny dip or a thrilling scooter ride. Plus, I’m making money while I sleep – talk about the dream life!
Now, normally, when I think of living this dream, my mind wanders straight to South East Asia. It’s got everything I could ever want – an affordable lifestyle, stunning palm-lined beaches, and a sense of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere. But lately, there’s been a new kid on the block, and it’s capturing the hearts of remote workers all over the world: Portugal. And let me tell you, the reasons behind its rise to fame are pretty convincing.
First off, Portugal’s location is a major draw. With all the chaos caused by Covid, people want to be able to hop on a short flight and be back home if they need to. And let’s not forget about the affordability factor – Portugal offers a high quality of life at a fraction of the cost of other European countries. It’s like getting a taste of heaven without breaking the bank.
But what really sets Portugal apart is how welcoming it is to digital nomads like you and me. The local governments have embraced the remote work movement with open arms, creating an environment that’s tailor-made for people like us. It’s refreshing to see a place that truly understands the needs and desires of digital nomads.
Have you heard of Madeira? It’s a beautiful place that saw a decline in visitors during the pandemic, just like many other tourist destinations. But the regional government came up with an interesting idea to bring people back – they created a special village for digital nomads. These are people who can work from anywhere as long as they have an internet connection.
The Digital Nomad Village in Madeira offers accommodation and a free workspace to those who choose to stay for at least a month. And let me tell you, it’s been a huge success! The government was hoping for 500 registrations in total, but they were getting 200 per day!
Since the village opened in 2021, it has already welcomed over 13,000 nomads from more than 125 countries. Can you believe it? And the age range is incredible – from 18 to 80 years old!
But what exactly can you do in this village? Well, there’s something for everyone. You can attend entrepreneurship meet-ups, jam sessions, and jazz nights. If you’re into sports, there’s sports training and fitness clubs. And if you’re interested in cryptocurrency, there are investment events just for you. And let’s not forget the mindfulness circles, where you can relax and find inner peace. There’s truly something for everyone.
Let me tell you about Fundão, a small town in the countryside. A few years back, a dynamic and forward-thinking mayor named Paulo Fernandes took charge of a place that was facing population decline and economic struggles. Mayor Fernandes transformed the old, rundown buildings in the town into collaborative workspaces for people in the tech industry. And guess what? It worked like magic!
In just four years, Fundão attracted 14 tech companies, created over 500 jobs, and became a hub for innovation with 68 startups and projects. It’s amazing how one person’s vision can completely change the fortune of a place, right?
Imagine strolling through cafes in Fundão, where you could have a Romanian coder sitting next to a Canadian data scientist. It’s like a mix of different cultures and ideas coming together in one spot. And Fundão is not the only place with such an inspiring story – there are similar tales of transformation all around the world.
Then there’s Lisbon, the place to be for digital nomads.
When I first arrived in Lisbon, I had a blast exploring the city’s attractions. I couldn’t resist trying the delicious pasteis de nata in Belém and taking the antique trams up the steep hills. From the lookout points, I enjoyed breathtaking sunsets and marveled at the sea of terracotta tiles below. In Alfama, I got a little lost but stumbled upon hidden gems along the way. I even splurged on a hat that caught my eye and took a trip to the palaces in Sintra.
However, after indulging in all the touristy delights, I felt an urge to dig deeper and discover the digital nomad community in Lisbon.
Did you know that Lisbon is considered one of the best places in Europe for digital nomads? It’s true! And you know what the best part is? It’s the strong sense of community among freelancers. Not only do many co-working spaces offer places to live, but they also organize meet-ups for everyone to connect.
Personally, I can’t get enough of this community. It’s one of the main reasons why I keep coming back to Lisbon. I’ve been a digital nomad for four years, and out of all the places I’ve been, Lisbon is the only one where I’ve felt such a deep connection with people who understand my lifestyle. We have meaningful conversations, share our experiences, and help each other grow. It’s truly amazing!
I had the chance to catch up with my friend Sonny Hoosain, a creative director from Cape Town who was spending a few months in Lisbon. I wanted to know his thoughts on the city, so I asked him. His response was immediate and enthusiastic.
“Lisbon has this incredible energy,” he said. “There’s always something happening, whether it’s events, live music, or the vibrant digital nomad scene. It just feels like the place to be.”
Of course, every coin has two sides. Lisbon’s rising popularity has led to soaring rental prices. This has presented some challenges for the locals, as many of them have lower incomes and are being forced to move away from the city center. However, Sonny mentioned that, for the most part, the locals have embraced the financial boost.
Discover Cascais, the Portuguese Riviera
As soon as I stepped out of the train station in Cascais, I immediately heard the distinct sound of a South African accent. And then another, and another. By the time I heard the fourth, I couldn’t help but feel a bit disoriented. It felt like I had somehow been transported to Mossel Bay during the busy December holidays. So, I decided to ask Adrian Roux, a South African property investor who has made Cascais his home for the past four years, what was going on. He shared with me that the number of South Africans moving to Portugal has recently exploded.
In fact, there’s even a Facebook group with a whopping 20,000 members called “South Africans helping South Africans in Portugal.” It seems that this influx of South Africans to Portugal has become a major phenomenon.
Getting the Golden Visa is like winning the lottery for South Africans who want to live in Portugal. It’s the go-to program for residency by investment in Europe and all you have to do is invest R7 million in a property or business. That might sound like a lot, but compared to other European countries, it’s a bargain. And here’s the best part – you don’t have to pack up your whole life and move to Portugal. Just spend a week there each year and you’re good to go.
I understand why people choose Cascais as their destination. It’s just an hour away from Lisbon by train, and it has 17 beaches. Cascais is a popular place for people from Lisbon to go in the summer. Christopher Columbus even came here when he discovered a new land. And in the 1800s, the Portuguese royal family started bathing here. But my favorite fact about Cascais is that Bryan Adams lived here from 1967 to 1970 when he was a kid. It’s where he spent his ‘Summer of 69’.
Hey there! So, you’ve probably heard about Cascais – it’s this amazing place that locals rave about. They say it’s perfect for people like you and me who love the ocean, crave delicious food, and can’t get enough of sunny weather (they have around 300 sunny days a year, can you imagine?). It’s like a dream come true for remote workers.
Now, here’s the thing… I have to be honest with you. There is a little catch. You know how in some places, everything seems just a bit more expensive? Well, that’s the case with Cascais. But let me tell you, even with that surcharge, there are still loads of remote workers who come here and just never want to leave. It’s that incredible!
There are special buildings just for people like me who want to work outside of their homes. One example is DNA Cascais, which is a place where you can work and also get help starting your own business. They want to help people be creative and innovative by developing their skills and knowledge. Over the past 14 years, they have helped lots of new companies and entrepreneurs.
But if you ask me, Cascais is better for visiting than living. Everything there is really expensive. The digital nomads who love going to the beach usually spend most of their time in the Algarve, a popular tourist spot in the southern part of the country.
Lagos, a calmer place
Let me tell you about Lagos, a truly amazing tourist town. You see, Lagos used to be a major port, and during Portugal’s Age of Discovery, it was a hub for naval excursions. Today, it sits peacefully along the beautiful Rio Bensafrim, surrounded by walls built back in the 16th century.
Tourists love visiting Lagos for many reasons. The beaches are perfect for lounging and sunbathing, and there are fantastic boat trips to enjoy. Plus, the nightlife is vibrant, with plenty of bars to choose from.
When I was in Lagos, I had a routine: every morning at 8am, I would stroll to the co-working office. As the sun rose, casting its warm, golden light on the old town’s cobblestone streets, I couldn’t help but feel the enchantment in the air. I would pass by elderly women starting their day and the stragglers from the night before, clutching their beers and speaking with a rebellious spirit.
So, I recently had the pleasure of meeting Joana Gloria, the brilliant mind behind Lagos Digital Nomads. We got to chatting over a cup of coffee at a cozy little cafe by the marina, and she shared some fascinating insights with me.
According to Joana, they often welcome a unique group of individuals known as “Slow Nomads.” These folks are looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of this place for a much longer period – around six to nine months. What makes them truly special is their knack for timing their stays from summer to summer, completely avoiding the tourist season. And let me tell you, this simple decision has completely revolutionized the game for local businesses.
Lisbon may be the go-to spot for startups and tech enthusiasts, but for those who prioritize a more well-rounded lifestyle, Lagos is the place to be. The charm lies in its connection to the ocean, slower pace of life, and strong sense of community. Here, you can effortlessly blend work and relaxation, soaking up the beauty of the beach while still getting things done. It’s a place where you can witness the magical colors of both sunrise and sunset, a daily reminder of the beauty that surrounds you.
There’s something about Lagos that attracts people on a deeper level. It’s a place where energies align, and creativity flows freely. The community is vibrant and supportive, with regular meet-ups, workshops, and talks that bring people together. These events foster a sense of camaraderie and inspire collaboration. At community dinners, individuals from all walks of life gather around a table, sharing stories and forging connections. It’s a chance to learn from one another and find inspiration in the diversity of ideas.
In Lagos, there’s a unique concept called speed mentoring, where individuals with different backgrounds come together to assess each other’s ideas. This collaborative process allows for valuable insights and feedback, helping ideas to grow and evolve. It’s an opportunity to tap into the collective knowledge and experience of the community, fostering innovation and growth.
But it doesn’t stop there. Lagos also offers boot camps, where digital nomads lend their expertise and support to local businesses. These collaborations help local entrepreneurs and businesses embrace digital strategies, sparking innovation and pushing boundaries. It’s a symbiotic relationship where both sides benefit and grow together.
In Lagos, life is about more than just work. It’s about finding balance, connecting with nature, and being part of a vibrant community. If you’re searching for a place that nurtures your mind, body, and soul, Lagos is where you’ll find it.
So, here’s the thing. This whole digital nomad lifestyle is pretty amazing. I mean, imagine being able to travel the world and work remotely at the same time. It’s like a dream come true. And let me tell you, Portugal is one place that definitely knows how to cater to digital nomads.
Living the Digital Nomad Life in Portugal
I had the opportunity to experience the digital nomad lifestyle in Portugal, and let me tell you, it was something special. Portugal has really embraced the digital nomad community, and it shows. From the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture to the welcoming locals and affordable cost of living, Portugal has it all.
But it’s not just about the beautiful surroundings and friendly people. The digital nomad ecosystem in Portugal goes beyond that. These nomads are not just tourists passing through; they are contributing to the local economy and actively participating in the community. They are making an impact, and it’s amazing to see.
There’s a real sense of connection here. It’s not just about making money and moving on to the next destination. It’s about forming relationships, exploring the culture, and giving back to the place that has welcomed you with open arms. It’s about being a part of something bigger, and that’s a really special feeling.
And let me tell you, Portugal is just the beginning. This digital nomad lifestyle is spreading, and it’s only getting bigger. The concept of digital nomad villages is gaining popularity, and there are even plans to create a South American village in Brazil. Imagine spending your days working on a beautiful Brazilian beach. Sounds pretty incredible, right?
What About South Africa?
Now, let’s talk about South Africa. It’s a place with so much potential for digital nomads. The weather is amazing, the cost of living is affordable, and the lifestyle is unbeatable. President Cyril Ramaphosa has even mentioned the possibility of offering a digital nomad visa in the future, which would make South Africa even more appealing.
But there are some challenges. Loadshedding, safety concerns, and expensive flights from Europe can be obstacles for digital nomads looking to make South Africa their home. However, these are challenges that can be overcome, especially when you consider all the positives that South Africa has to offer.
So, will we see a South African digital nomad village in the future? It’s hard to say. But one thing is for sure, the digital nomad lifestyle is here to stay. It’s a way of life that offers endless possibilities and a chance to truly explore the world. And whether you choose Portugal, Brazil, or South Africa, you’re bound to have an incredible experience.
