The Thrill of Cycling
Hey there! So, have you ever hopped on a bicycle and felt the wind rush through your hair as you pedaled away? Let me tell you, there’s something truly magical about the thrill of cycling. It’s like you’re flying, but with complete control. I love the feeling of freedom and adventure that comes with it.
Now, let’s talk about why cycling is so great. First of all, it’s an amazing way to stay active and healthy. When you’re out biking, you’re not just sitting around, you’re moving and using your muscles. That means you’re getting a workout without even realizing it. Plus, it’s a low-impact exercise, so it’s easy on your joints and less likely to cause injuries.
But it’s not just about the physical benefits. Cycling is also great for your mental health. It’s a chance to escape the noise and chaos of everyday life, and just be one with the road. There’s no better therapy than feeling the rhythm of your pedaling and the world passing by. It’s a moment of pure bliss and tranquility.
Exploring the World
Another amazing thing about cycling is that it allows you to explore the world in a unique way. When you’re on a bike, you can go places that cars can’t. You can take the scenic routes, discover hidden gems, and truly experience the beauty of nature up close.
Imagine taking a ride through a peaceful countryside, with fields of wildflowers stretching as far as the eye can see. Or maybe you prefer a thrilling off-road adventure, navigating through rugged terrains and conquering obstacles along the way. Whichever path you choose, cycling opens up a whole new world of exploration and excitement.
Connections and Community
Lastly, let’s talk about the sense of community that comes with cycling. It’s not just a solo activity – it’s something that brings people together. You can join cycling groups or clubs, meet fellow enthusiasts, and share your love for the sport.
And it’s not just about the people you meet – it’s about the connections you make with the environment too. Cycling allows you to connect with the world around you in a deeply personal way. You’re no longer just an observer, but an active participant in nature’s beautiful symphony.
So, if you’ve never tried cycling before, I highly recommend giving it a shot. It’s a world of adventure, freedom, and connection, just waiting for you. Who knows, you might just fall in love with life behind the handlebars.
Elise Kirsten is here to share some incredible mountain-bike trails in South Africa. Get ready for a thrilling adventure that combines the excitement of biking with the beauty of nature.
When it comes to mountain biking, South Africa has some hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered. I’ve had the privilege of exploring these trails firsthand, and now I want to share them with you.
First up is the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort. This trail offers a perfect balance between challenging terrain and stunning scenery. You’ll ride through the lush greenery and be in awe of the beautiful waterfall that awaits you at the end.
If you’re looking for a trail that will test your skills, then head to Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville. This technical trail will push you to the limit with its steep climbs and technical descents. But don’t worry, the incredible views of the vineyards and Table Mountain will make it all worth it.
Another must-visit trail is Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park in Durban. This trail has something for everyone, from gentle beginner trails to challenging black diamond routes. You’ll also have the opportunity to spot some wildlife along the way, adding an extra element of excitement to your ride.
If you’re up for a real challenge, then Thaba Trails in Johannesburg is the place to go. This trail system offers a variety of options for riders of all skill levels, but be prepared for some serious climbs and technical sections. The panoramic views of the city skyline will make every drop of sweat worth it.
Lastly, make sure to check out the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. This trail will take you through dense forests and past beautiful waterfalls. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and mountain bikers alike.
So, if you’re ready for an unforgettable biking experience, why not give one of these trails a try? South Africa truly is a mountain biker’s dream come true.
When I rode through the misty grasslands of Karkloof Country Club in KZN, I experienced a thrilling mix of steep switchback climbs and smooth downhill tracks. It was an exhilarating taste of the mountain bike trails available there. But that’s not the only place you can explore on two wheels.
Let me take you to the Northern Cape, where I discovered the Papkuilsfontein mountain bike trails in Nieuwoudtville. The sound of my tires crunching over the coarse sand filled my ears as I embarked on one of the farm’s new trails. It was an unusually misty morning that added an air of mystery to my adventure. These trails are the first of their kind on Papkuilsfontein Farm, and they officially opened in October 2020.
I’m excited to tell you about some amazing mountain bike trails that you can explore at Papkuilsfontein, a farm in South Africa. The Ou-Muur, Duifieshoek, Arendsnes, and Waterfall trails offer a range of distances from four to 21 kilometers. You don’t have to be a technical expert to enjoy these trails. They provide a great opportunity to experience the beauty of the farm’s canyon and take in the breathtaking views.
In the coming months, Papkuilsfontein has plans to open two more trails. The Klipspringer trail, which stretches for 27 kilometers, will provide riders with more technical challenges. If you prefer a less technical but equally enjoyable ride, you can try out the Son-Op trail, which covers 26 kilometers.
Living and farming in this area has been incredibly challenging due to a five-year drought. But farmer Jaco van Wyk has found an innovative way to address this. He has partnered with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Dryland Conservation program to create these mountain bike trails. This initiative aims to practice sustainable land management and reduce the farm’s reliance on sheep farming. By doing so, Jaco hopes to restore the land to its natural habitat and attract visitors throughout the year, rather than just during the flower season.
When you visit Papkuilsfontein, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an incredible landscape. As you stand at the viewpoint, you can watch birds gracefully swooping and diving beneath you, adding to the beauty of the waterfall and canyon below. It’s the perfect place to take a break after a bike ride in this amazing location.
The region is known for its rich biodiversity. Here, you’ll encounter a variety of vegetation, including Cape fynbos, Hantam Karoo, Renosterveld, and dolerite-sill. Throughout the year, the area is adorned with indigenous bulbs and other seasonal flowers, creating a vibrant display of colors.
This area is also home to a range of fascinating wildlife. Klipspringer, duiker, aardvark, mongoose, and Cape hare can all be found here, making their homes amidst the diverse vegetation. And let’s not forget the incredible birdlife! The canyon at Papkuilsfontein is home to Verreaux’s eagles, which have made their nests right here. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight.
To explore the trails for cycling or trail running, you’ll need to purchase a day permit, which costs R100. Please note that the hiking trails are only available to guests staying on the farm. If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry! You can rent one for R500 per day, with a 50% deposit that is returnable. If you have any questions or need further information, you can contact Papkuilsfontein at 027 218 1246 or visit their website at papkuilsfontein.com.
Welcome to Kwazulu-Natal
Explore the Karkloof Trails in Howick
Trailforks, an international trail database, describes Karkloof as having “the best flow in South Africa.” I believe it’s true! The Karkloof Trails offer a variety of routes, and one of my favorites is the 37km track. This trail takes you through beautiful hand-built paths in the Sappi pine plantations. Along the way, you’ll also cross sections of the mistbelt grassland, a precious habitat for endangered species like wattled cranes and the unique Karkloof blue butterfly.
Hey there! Are you ready for an awesome cycling adventure? Well, get ready to experience the thrilling singletrack at Karkloof or if you prefer a more relaxed ride, stick to the wider forestry paths and pedal your way to Karkloof Falls.
When it comes to climbing, get ready for a challenge with Campbell’s Climb. And if you’re up for some downhill fun, the snaking Gauntlet with its bridges and berms is perfect for you. Need an extra boost of adrenaline? The isiKhova black route will definitely get your heart pumping. And after all that excitement, you can wind down along the Karkloof River on the gentle cool-down track. Trust me, there’s a mix of forestry roads, single tracks, and jeep tracks that cater to riders of all levels.
Now, let’s talk about permits. You’ll need a day permit to enjoy all the fun. For adults, it’s just R60, and for children under 18, it’s R30 (and hey, kids under 6 ride for free!). If you’re over 65, the permit is also R30. You can get your permit at the Karkloof Country Club or give them a call at 071 124 7649. And if you want more details, check out their website at karkloofclub.co.za.
I reached out to some of South Africa’s top mountain bikers and asked them about their favorite local trails. Here’s what they had to say.
Luke Moir
I have to say, my absolute favorite trail in South Africa has got to be the Tokai downhill line in Cape Town. The speed and flow of this trail are just out of this world! It’s got everything a mountain biker could dream of, from challenging rock gardens to thrilling jumps and drops. The best part? Getting to the top of the trail is a breeze.
Robyn De Groot
Choosing just one trail is no easy feat, let me tell you. South Africa is truly a mountain biking paradise, and the options are endless. But if I had to pick, the trail network between Saasveld and Witfontein in George would be right up there. These trails offer a little bit of everything – challenging climbs, technical sections, and exhilarating descents. And let’s not forget about the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you.
Mariske Strauss
I’ve been fortunate to experience many beautiful trails, but if I absolutely had to pick a favorite, it would be Bloemendaler on Nitida Wine Farm. When the first rays of morning sun illuminate Table Mountain, it’s simply enchanting. This trail holds a special place in my heart as it’s where my best friend proposed to me, pledging to be my partner for life. As you navigate this trail, you’ll find yourself weaving through lush indigenous forest, providing a refreshing respite from the scorching heat. However, be prepared for a challenging ascent back to the top.

Tygerberg Trails, Durbanville
On any given weekend, you’ll find me exploring the vast network of trails offered by the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club. With an extensive network spanning 150km across 15 farms in Durbanville, there’s always something new to discover. If you’re a beginner, I recommend checking out the trails at Meerendal and Bloemendal wine farms.
Get ready for some adventure at Bloemendal’s exciting B-Spot pump track! It’s the perfect spot to have a blast and enjoy yourself. But if you’re looking for more of a challenge, check out Lombards Terra with its thrilling routes. And if you’re up for a real workout, head over to the top of Dorstberg, the highest hill at Meerendal.
Once you reach the summit, get ready for a truly intense uphill climb that will test your stamina. And when you finally make it to the top, take a moment to rest and take in the stunning view. You can even relax on a bench dedicated to the memory of the late Gugu Zulu, a beloved racing driver and mountain-bike enthusiast.
Ready for some downhill action? You’re in luck! The slightly technical singletrack will take you on an adrenaline-pumping descent. And don’t worry, it’s not all extreme. The trail also connects with the more gentle Esther Suss berms, so you can enjoy a mix of challenges and easy riding.
As I descend Cheeky Corners, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement. This is Contermanskloof’s latest addition, filled with small jumps and chicken runs. It’s the perfect place for me to unleash my mountain biking skills.
Contermanskloof Farm has quickly become my go-to destination for trail riding. Not only does it offer breathtaking views of Table Bay, but it also sparks my creativity. The beauty of the landscape makes me want to grab a paintbrush and capture it on canvas.
When it comes to trail options, Contermanskloof Farm has something for everyone. The blue route, which includes Upper Supertubes, Supertubes, and the slightly more technical Cheeky Corners, is perfect for intermediate riders like myself. The climbs are challenging, and the descents are thrilling. As I race downhill with the wind in my face, I feel an incredible sense of freedom.
For beginners, there is a green trail that provides a friendly introduction to mountain biking. It’s a great way to build confidence and learn the ropes. But for those seeking an adrenaline rush, the black routes – Downhill Mainline and Black Rhino – are where the real excitement lies. These routes feature large drop-offs and incredibly rocky sections. They are not for the faint of heart, but they offer a truly exhilarating experience for those brave enough to tackle them.
Contermanskloof Farm has truly become my happy place. The trails, the views, and the sense of adventure make every ride unforgettable. If you’re a mountain biking enthusiast like me, this is a destination you won’t want to miss. So grab your bike, hit the trails, and prepare to be amazed!
Hey there! So, I’ve got some awesome news for you. I recently discovered this amazing place called Hoogekraal, and let me tell you, it’s a total blast! Brace yourself for 8.5km of pure fun and excitement. But wait, there’s more! Hoogekraal is not just for the pros, there’s also plenty of intermediate riding options available.
One of the highlights of Hoogekraal is the famous Cobra descent – trust me, it’s a technical masterpiece! And guess what? The fun doesn’t stop there. If you want to extend your adventure, you can connect to Welvergenoegd and conquer an additional 16.5km of trails. That means a total of 24km of biking goodness!
But hold on tight, because there’s even more to explore. If you’re up for it, you can continue your journey all the way to the Fair Cape section. It’s like a never-ending paradise for cycling enthusiasts like you and me.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your bike, put on your helmet, and let’s hit the trails at Hoogekraal. It’s time to experience the thrill of biking in this incredible place!
Hey there! Looking to hit the trails? Well, I’ve got some awesome options for you. Let’s dive right in!
First up, we have Contermanskloof. Don’t worry about the price, it won’t break the bank. Just bring along R60 and you’re good to go. You can pay at the Dairy Shed or in the outside honesty box. Easy peasy!
Next on the list is Meerendal. They’ve got a special rate for students, pensioners, and under 18s. For them, it’s only R20. And for the rest of us, it’s R50. Just swing by the guard house to settle up. Simple as that!
Now, if you’re in the mood for some family fun, Bloemendal and Hillcrest are your go-to spots. Adults can join in for R60, while children pay just R40. When it’s time to pay, you have two options: the Biosport shop or any of the Snapscan facilities at the trail centre. Take your pick!
Heading over to Hoogekraal, Welvergenoegd, and Fair Cape Trails, things get even easier. Just bring R60 and drop it in the honesty box at Hoogekraal. Or, if you prefer a more tech-savvy solution, you can use Snapscan or Zapper at any of the facilities. So many choices!

Ready for more?
Well, hold on tight because I’ve got another fantastic recommendation for you. How about checking out the Bottelary Hills Conservancy MTB Trails in Stellenbosch? Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
When you’re looking for a great bike ride, the Bottelary Hills Conservancy is the place to be. With 85km of trails on the edge of Stellenbosch, you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful scenery of wine country. You’ll be surrounded by stunning views of the Jonkershoek Mountains, with hills covered in vineyards, woods, fynbos, and renosterveld.
The main trail in the Conservancy is a 27.5km circular route. It’s mostly made up of wide, gravel tracks that are easy to ride on. There are also several loops of narrower single tracks that wind their way up and down the hills before joining back to the main path. These trails are not too technical, so even if you’re a beginner, you’ll still have a great time. In fact, the Lizard and Mongoose trails are especially enjoyable.
If you’re interested in riding in the Bottelary Hills Conservancy, you’ll need a day permit. You can get one for R60 from several locations, including Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate, Asara, Jordan, Zevenwacht, Hazendal wine estates, and the Soneike Engen garage. Just give them a call at 083 448 0810 or visit bottelaryconservancy.co.za for more information.
When you ride the 22km route at Harkerville, make sure to give yourself some extra time to enjoy the beautiful views. This trail, known as Harkerville Trails, is located between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.
Discovering the Harkerville Trails
The Harkerville Trails offer a 22km Red Route that starts off the N2 highway, perfect for both beginners and experienced riders. The trail takes you through a magical indigenous forest, where the soft glow of sunlight filters through the trees. It’s not a very difficult path, so it’s suitable for most people. As you ride, you’ll see colorful butterflies dancing around you, and you’ll hear the delightful songs of birds in this peaceful paradise.
After you leave the forest, you’ll have a climb near the pine plantations. But don’t worry, it’s not too steep. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. Stand on the cliffs and soak in the beauty of the ocean, as waves crash against the rocks below. It’s a truly mesmerizing sight.
As you make your way back to the starting point, be cautious of the tree roots, especially if it’s wet outside. They can be quite slippery. And right before you reach the ocean, the trail becomes sandy, so be prepared for that as well.
If you think 22km might be too much for you, don’t worry! Harkerville Trails also offer shorter routes. There’s a Yellow route and a Blue route, both of which are great alternatives for those who prefer a shorter ride.
Day permit: R53, I can get it at the Garden of Eden or SANParks’ Thesen Island office by calling 044 302 5600 or visiting the website sanparks.org.
You can go hiking, bird watching, or have a picnic there. It’s a beautiful location with stunning views. I recommend taking a camera to capture the natural beauty. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. The Garden of Eden is a peaceful escape from the noise of the city. If you enjoy nature and relaxation, you’ll love it here. Whether you’re planning a family outing or a solo adventure, the Garden of Eden is a great choice. I encourage you to explore this hidden gem in the heart of nature.
When you hit the trails at Van Gaalen, you may be surprised by the challenging terrain. Even though the distances of some trails are not too long, you’ll still get an excellent workout.
Located in the northwest, Van Gaalen Trails in Magaliesberg cover an expansive 100km network of mainly singletrack. These trails wind their way through 30 farms and private properties at the foothills of the majestic Magaliesberg mountains. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider, you’ll find something suitable for your skill level. However, keep in mind that some routes require confidence and a decent level of fitness. It’s recommended to use tubeless tires due to sections of sharp-edged rocks.
Enthusiast rider Andrew Steer describes the trails as having beautifully designed singletrack, challenging climbs that will make your lungs burn, exciting rollercoaster-like riverbeds, and purpose-built riding bridges just waiting to be conquered.
A day permit to ride the Van Gaalen Trails costs R60, and children under 12 can ride for free. You can get your permit at the Van Gaalen Farm Shop, or you can call 083 226 7834 for more information. You can also visit vangaalen.co.za for additional details.
