I’ve always believed that the future holds a scarcity of water and food, so it’s crucial for us to adopt survival skills instead of focusing solely on social media. It’s time for us to embrace renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, as well as develop methods for harnessing rainwater and growing our own food. That’s why I was thrilled to discover Gary Goldman, also known as The Mushroom Guru. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a mushroom foraging event at Delheim Wine Estate.

Now, Gary is encouraging people to grow their own mushrooms. You have the option to either buy a log already inoculated with shiitake mushroom spores from him or attend one of his workshops. At the workshop, you’ll learn how to inoculate your own log with shiitake mycelium and take it home with you. It’s not only a fun way to spend a few hours, but it will also save you from being on a lengthy waiting list for pre-inoculated logs. Plus, by growing your own mushrooms, you’ll be taking a step towards self-sufficiency and cultivating your own food.

Imagine this: I’m at the Shiitake Workshop, surrounded by the sounds of drilling, banging, and the scent of freshly waxed Bluegum logs. It’s quite the experience!

These workshops take place at Craig Fourie’s home in Somerset West, Cape Town. When you attend, you’ll have the pleasure of working with both Gary and Craig, who will guide you through the process of preparing your very own shiitake-sprouting log. The day begins with a cup of coffee and some delicious muffins. As we enjoy our treats, we’ll have a chat about the amazing world of mushrooms.

Once we’re fueled up and ready to go, it’s time to dive into log preparation. You’ll start by choosing your log. We like to use bluegum logs because they’re a great way to repurpose alien trees. Next, you’ll grab a drill and start making holes in the log. These holes will eventually be filled with dowels that carry the special Shiitake mycelium. Don’t forget to seal the holes with wax to protect them from bacteria. And don’t worry, the wax won’t hinder the growth of your shiitake mushrooms. They’re tough little guys!

After the drilling, banging, and waxing, you’ll label your log so you never forget what’s growing on it. Then, you’ll be able to take your log home, along with a detailed set of notes outlining the entire process. With these notes, you’ll be able to prepare more logs on your own. It’s simple and straightforward. You’ll be a shiitake growing expert in no time!

So here’s the deal: you’ll have to wait a bit before you can start seeing those mushrooms sprouting on your log. It takes about 12-18 months for the magic to happen. You see, there’s something called the spawn run, and it’s a process that involves a rainy season and a hot summer. But here’s the catch – it all depends on factors like temperature, humidity, and the properties of your log. During the spawn run, you need to be careful with where you keep your log. It should be in a cool shady spot because direct sunlight can be a killer for the spawn. And make sure it’s not touching the ground, you don’t want any pesky bacteria or disease to ruin the party. I’ll be honest, this kind of put a damper on my excitement. I’m more of an instant gratification kind of person. But hey, I know that when those little shiitake mushrooms make their appearance next winter, I’ll be jumping up and down with pure glee!

Let me tell you how I grow my own mushrooms. It’s pretty easy, actually. All you need is a log and some wooden dowels with Shiitake mycelium. You just insert the dowels into the log and cover them with wax. It’s a simple way to get started growing your own mushrooms.

But while I wait for my Shiitake mushrooms to grow, I’ve found another way to keep myself happy. I’m currently growing Pink Oyster mushrooms in a plastic container in my cupboard. I just put some damp pieces of cardboard in the container, cover it with cling-film, and add mushroom spawn from The Mushroom Guru. After a few weeks, I’ll have my very own home-grown Oyster mushrooms. It’s that easy!

If you’re interested, there’s even a workshop on how to grow Oyster mushrooms. So, why not give it a try? You’ll be amazed at how simple and rewarding it can be to grow your own mushrooms.

Growing mushrooms is an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. It’s actually quite simple, and you don’t need much space – just a garden with some shade will do. If you don’t have a garden, you can always ask a friend if you can grow mushrooms in theirs and repay them with some delicious mushrooms. And if all else fails, don’t worry! You can even grow mushrooms in your own cupboard. So, there’s no reason not to give it a try!

The many ways mushrooms benefit your health

Mushrooms aren’t just delicious – they’re also incredibly good for you! Here are a few ways mushrooms can boost your health:

Shiitake mushrooms: These mushrooms have incredible anti-tumor properties and can help reduce the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. They also strengthen the immune system, lower cholesterol levels, and aid in liver detoxification.

Oyster mushrooms: Believe it or not, oyster mushrooms have more iron than meat and high levels of potassium that help prevent heart disease. They can lower cholesterol, strengthen your immune system, and may even support efforts to quit smoking.

Reishi mushrooms: These incredible fungi have a whole host of health benefits. They’re anti-cancer and anti-oxidant, meaning they can help fight off diseases and boost your immune system. But that’s not all. Reishi mushrooms also facilitate blood circulation, which is important for overall health. They can even reduce cholesterol levels, helping to improve heart health. And if you’re struggling with your breathing, these mushrooms can assist in clearing airways and make it easier to take a deep breath. Not only that, but they’ve also been shown to improve short-term insomnia, helping you get a better night’s sleep. And if that wasn’t enough, they also support joint mobility and muscle relaxation, keeping your body flexible and pain-free.
