Hi there! I’m Sandy Olver, and I’m excited to share some of my local bird spotting knowledge with you. I’ve been a member of BirdLife South Africa and the South Coast Trogan’s Bird Club, so I’ve had plenty of experience in this area.

If you’re not up for a long trip, I suggest taking a walk down to the folly on the ruins of the old railway bridge that overlooks the estuary. It’s a great spot! Especially when the river is full and the mouth is closed, you’re in for a treat. Keep your eyes open for kingfishers – both the giant and malachite varieties. You might also spot cormorants and even a black-crowned night-heron.

Don’t forget to check under the existing bridge for nests of the little swifts. During the summer, you might even catch a glimpse of the lesser striped swallows. And let’s not forget about the beautiful cape gannets! If you visit during Sardine Run season, you’ll get to witness their incredible death-defying dives as they chase after the shoals.

If you want to spot some interesting birds, there are a few places you can go. One option is the Rocky Bay Trails, located at Rocky Bay Resorts. You can enter these trails for a small fee.

When it comes to bird watching, it can be challenging to actually see the birds. But if you know how to recognize their calls, it can make things a lot easier. Listen out for the sounds of migrant cuckoos, honeyguides, the mournful buff-spotted flufftail, or Narina trogon. If you can identify these calls, you’ll have a better idea of what to look for and where. And don’t forget to keep an eye on the sky for raptors.

• White-faced, white-backed, yellow-billed, and African black ducks;
• Moorhens;
• Little grebe;
• Grey-crowned cranes in the grassland or tree-tops;
• Red-capped robin chat or scrub robins in the bush;
• Weavers, waxbills, widows or woodpeckers, sunbirds, shrikes and starlings, doves and drongos in the riverine bush and grassland;

• How about the Grey cuckoo shrike?
