Getting there and around
Out of all the reserves I visited, Bonamanzi is the closest to the city, just a three-hour drive up the N2. The Pongola Game Reserve is an hour further north, and Ndumo, near the Mozambique border, is the farthest from Durban, at a five-hour drive.
When to go
Zululand has a hot subtropical climate, making it suitable for visiting all year round. However, if you want the best game viewing experience, the ideal time to visit is from April to September. During these months, the weather is warm during the day and cooler at night.
Birding enthusiasts will find the period from November to March most favorable, as this is when migrant birds visit. It’s also the rainy season but the thunderstorms are usually brief and the sun quickly comes out.
Game Reserves

Ndumo Game Reserve

One of the best ways to fully appreciate the magnificent bird species is by joining one of the guided walks around the beautiful pans. These pans are surrounded by stunning fever trees and sycamore figs, creating a magical backdrop for your birdwatching adventure. Hey there! Let me tell you about the amazing experiences you can have at this fantastic place.
If you’re up for some adventure, there are three walking trails you can explore. These trails are perfect for a morning stroll and usually take around three hours to complete. Let me give you a little sneak peek of what you might encounter along the way.
The Pongola River and sand forest trail is a must-visit if you’re a bird lover. You might catch a glimpse of the majestic Pel’s fishing owl, the striking southern-banded snake eagle, or the beautiful African broadbill.
Now, if you’re into water birds and waders, the Nyamithi Pan trail is your go-to. Keep your eyes peeled for these fascinating creatures as you make your way through this picturesque trail.
For those who appreciate a serene atmosphere, the Shokwe Pan is the place to be. This unique ox-bow lake is surrounded by a magnificent sycamore fig forest. While exploring, don’t forget to look out for the colorful Narina trogon, the charming twinspots, the delightful white-eared barbet, and the graceful bant-necked romula.
When it comes to getting around, you have the option of self-driving or joining a guided drive. Considering the low wildlife population, it might be more enjoyable to take the wheel yourself and explore at your own pace.
If you choose self-drive, make sure to stop by Red Cliffs for a delicious lunch. This spot offers a braai area where you can enjoy your meal while taking in the breathtaking view of the Usuthu River flowing into Mozambique.
Now, let’s talk about accommodation. You have the option to camp, and trust me, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
There are 14 shaded campsites, each thoughtfully equipped with power outlets and braai stands. So you can stay connected and enjoy a cozy cookout under the stars.
So, what are you waiting for? Head on over to this extraordinary place and immerse yourself in all the wonders it has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.
When you’re planning a vacation, there’s nothing better than finding the perfect accommodation that suits your needs. That’s where self-catering cottages come in. These cottages have everything you need for a comfortable stay, including two beds, a small kitchenette, DSTV, a small deck, and even a braai stand on the grass outside.
Step into Nature at Manyoni Private Game Reserve
Looking for a place that’s perfect for spotting predators? Manyoni is your best bet.
Back in 2005, Manyoni was created by combining various farms, hunting reserves, and eco-lodges. Seventeen landowners came together to make it happen. It wasn’t until six years later, though, when lions were introduced, that Manyoni officially became a Big Five reserve. With over 30 lions roaming the sprawling 23,000-hectare property, you’d never guess it used to be farmland. And let me tell you, the landscape here is absolutely breathtaking.
Now, here’s something you don’t want to miss: the rhino dehorning experience led by Manyoni’s wildlife management team. Trust me, it’s an adventure like no other. You’ll also have the chance to join a wildlife monitoring session where you can learn all about telemetry equipment and even track one of the collared elephants, lions, cheetahs, or wild dogs. And if you’re up for some nighttime excitement, they offer pangolin tracking, too (weather permitting, of course).
When it comes to accommodations, Manyoni has you covered.
Guess what? I found an incredible private lodge called Bayete Zulu. It’s seriously amazing because it’s set in a forest of fever-trees that overlooks a waterhole. Can you believe it? And get this, they only have three chalets, so it’s super exclusive.
And let me tell you about the Mavela Game Lodge. The designers really went all out with this one. The main area looks just like a crowned eagle! How cool is that? And the views of the wilderness are just epic. You can enjoy them from the deck, by the pool, or even from the stoep of your safari-style tent. It’s the perfect place to be at one with nature.
Somkhanda
Now, here’s something really special. Somkhanda is the best place for unfenced camping in a reserve where you can spot the Big Five. Can you imagine camping so close to these amazing animals? It’s a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
I want to share with you the story of Somkhanda, an incredible conservation project in South Africa. It’s a place where the community takes ownership of protecting and preserving the Big Five – elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos. This was one of the first ventures of its kind in the country, and it has been a huge success.
Why should you visit Somkhanda? Well, besides the obvious thrill of experiencing wild camping and going on self-drive trails, you also have the unique opportunity to track wild dogs or participate in monitoring lions. But what makes this experience even more special is knowing that by visiting, you’re directly supporting a community-owned reserve that has real, positive impacts on the local people.
Now, let me tell you about some of the activities you can do at Somkhanda. You can join expert monitors as they track critical species, which costs R380 per person. Imagine the excitement of being part of the team responsible for protecting these amazing animals! If you’re part of a corporate group, you can even arrange a rhino dehorning experience, which costs approximately R25,000. It’s an opportunity to contribute to the conservation efforts and see firsthand the measures taken to protect these endangered creatures. And if you prefer to explore on your own, there are also 20 kilometers of self-driving trails for you to enjoy.
When it comes to accommodation, Somkhanda offers a variety of options to suit different preferences and budgets. Whether you prefer a cozy lodge or a rustic campsite, you’ll find something that meets your needs. And the best part is that by staying at Somkhanda, you’ll be contributing directly to the ongoing conservation efforts.
Welcome to the Haak en Steek Camp! It’s a unique and simple camp, with a refreshing outdoor experience. We believe in keeping things basic, so we have bucket showers and pit toilets. It may not be luxurious, but it’s all about embracing nature and getting back to basics. The cost is R250 per person.
If you’re looking for a more comfortable option, we have two adjoining tented camps available. These camps can accommodate a total of 54 people in two-man tents. The cost for staying in these camps is R350 per person. Plus, the views from No. 10 in Zebra Camp are simply incredible! You’ll often spot lions near the dam.
If you prefer a bit more comfort and privacy, our Somkhanda Lodge offers six spacious suites. Each suite leads onto an indigenous garden, where you can relax and rejuvenate. There’s also a small pool and communal kitchen for your convenience. The cost for staying at the lodge is R700 per person.
For those who are adventurous and enjoy camping, Explorations offers three-day catered camping experiences in the reserve. If you’re a self-sufficient camper, the cost is R2,250 per person. But if you prefer the comfort of canvas dome tents, the cost is R4,695 per person.
Welcome to Pongola Game Reserve
When I read about The Pongola Game Reserve in brochures, they touted it as “the only destination in South Africa to offer Kariba-like, water-based safari activities.” I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. However, after my own experience there, I can confidently say that it truly lives up to the hype.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to go on two boat trips, and let me tell you, they were absolutely incredible. On both days, we were lucky enough to spot about 60 elephants! It was an awe-inspiring sight that I will never forget.
I stayed in the southern section of the reserve, which is divided by the magnificent Pongola River. The location was perfect, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the breathtaking beauty of the reserve.
If you decide to visit The Pongola Game Reserve, I highly recommend taking part in the Elephant experience. This unforgettable adventure starts at the White Elephant Bush Camp, where guests are driven to the jetty and then whisked across the dam in about an hour. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to spot other incredible wildlife such as buffalo, waterbuck, hippo, and crocodiles. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss, and it only costs R660 per person.
Hey there! I just went on an amazing river cruise from Nkwazi, and I had to tell you all about it. We had the option to go in the morning or afternoon, and let me tell you, it was incredible. Not only did we get to see some beautiful birds, but we also saw three of the Big 5 animals. It was just as breathtaking as the elephant experience! And the best part? It only cost R395 per person. Such a steal!
If you’re into fishing, you’ll love the Tiger Fishing activity on the lake. It’s super popular, and for good reason. The best part is that it’s catch and release, so you can enjoy the thrill of the fight without any harm to the fish. Now, the fish here might be a bit smaller than up north, but they still put up a good fight. In fact, one lucky fisherman recently caught a 6-kilogram specimen. Can you imagine reeling that in? And guess what? It’s only R225 per person. Such a bargain!
Now, let me tell you about the accommodation.
Have you heard of Africamps at White Elephant Safaris? It’s the coolest place to stay if you’re looking for a unique experience. These “tents” can actually accommodate up to five people, and they have everything you need. There’s a fully kitted out kitchen, a spacious deck, and even a braai for those delicious barbecues. Oh, and did I mention the wood-fired jacuzzi? Yeah, it’s the perfect way to relax after a long day of exploring. And if you don’t feel like cooking, you can always grab a braai pack or a breakfast basket from the lodge. How convenient is that?
When I stayed at Nkwazi Lake Lodge, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The view of the Pongola River and the wetlands below was absolutely stunning. The lodge itself was perfect – cozy wooden chalets with private balconies that provided the perfect spot to take in the breathtaking scenery. And let’s not forget about the swimming pool and delicious buffets – they were the cherry on top of a fantastic stay. I’ll never forget the sight of a herd of buffalo peacefully sleeping below the lodge at night. And the best part? All of this was available starting at just R1 425 per person per night.
Welcome to Babanango Game Reserve
If you’re looking for awe-inspiring views, Babanango Game Reserve is the place to be. Spanning over 22,000 hectares, this reserve is committed to conservation and benefiting the local community. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be captivated by the stunning landscapes – vast grassland valleys, dramatic rocky outcrops, and the flowing White Umfolozi River.
Here’s what you should do:
When I go on a safari, one of my favorite activities is taking morning and evening game drives. These drives often take me to incredible lookout points where I can enjoy breathtaking views of the reserve. It’s such a thrill to spot the diverse wildlife, including fascinating bird species like the buff-streaked chat, mountain wagtail, and African finfoot.
And when I’m not on a game drive, there are guided walks available for everyone to explore the reserve. It’s a great opportunity to immerse myself in nature and discover the 283 different species that call this place home.
Speaking of home, let me tell you about the accommodations.
At Babanango Valley Lodge, there’s a fantastic long infinity pool that allows me to relax and soak in the stunning view of the valley. The food here is absolutely outstanding, and the main area is filled with interesting memorabilia showcasing the local history. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with a drink in hand. Prices start at R2,585 per person per night.
If you’re looking for even more luxury, Zulu Rock Lodge is perched on a mountainside and offers breathtaking panoramic views. With its seven stone-clad chalets, this lodge can accommodate up to 16 people. It’s a truly special place to stay, starting at R2,160 per person per night.
